Local tips!
HIKING -> LUNCH CIRCUITS
One of the better daytime itineraries around here is a good morning or afternoon hike or snowshoe followed by a cozy lunch or a beer. Here are several recommended ‘circuits’ – the hike, and the nearby restaurant or bar, with the distance from Hamilton in parentheses next to the town you’ll start from.
Hamilton (right here!)
Harry Lang Trails at Colgate University -> Good Nature Farm Brewery
Erieville (12 miles)
Stoney Pond State Forest -> The Blue Canoe
Oneida (18 miles)
Mt. Hope Reservoir -> Ray Bros. BBQ
Cazenovia (19 miles)
Stone Quarry Art Park [or] Chittenango Falls -> The Brae Loch Inn [or] Critz Farms Brewery
Manlius (30 miles)
Green Lakes State Park -> Ironwood Pizza
DINNER
Poolville Country Store
Hubbardsville (6 miles)
A really special place that has been in operation in some form or another since the 1830s. The owners are true gems, and the food and ambiance are historic and quaint.
Hamilton Inn
Colgate professors’ local haunt.
Brewster Inn
Cazenovia (19 miles)
A bit out of town, but some of the best food in the area.
BREAKFAST / LUNCH
Rye Berry
Local coffee and café, a Colgate standard.
Flour & Salt
Delicious bagels, bialys, pastries, and coffee.
Standard Bakery
Waterville (12 miles)
Worth the trip, but check opening hours before you go, and go before 11 because they sell out of everything! An incredible, authentic Parisian bakery just up the road in sleepy Waterville. No idea why it’s there, but I’m so happy it is!
Country Peddler at Hubbardsville Mall
Hubbardsville (6 miles)
A local favorite for casual counter eating or takeout, sandwiches and salads and pies.
ENTERTAINMENT
Check out the Colgate University calendar of events online, there are often sports events, lectures, performances, and concerts open to the public: https://calendar.colgate.edu/
Earlville Opera House (Earlville)
Nelson Odeon (Cazenovia)
When bands come to town, they come one of these two places. For local shows, the Blue Canoe, Roadside Inn, Solsville Hotel, Good Nature Brewery and Taproom, and Ray Bros BBQ (in the warm months) sometimes have things going on – otherwise you’re going to Syracuse!
Hamilton Theater
The village movie house that shows first run new releases, just renovated and reopened this fall.
Manlius Art Cinema
Shows art house, small budget, and indie releases – only theater of its kind around here.
SHOPPING
Bouckville, about 4 miles out of town, is a renowned antique store crawl. They have an annual antique week in the summer that draws hundreds of vendors and collectors from across the state.
