I'm getting a lot of first time Airbnb users, so if this is your first time, please note:
1. Please ask me questions about the home BEFORE booking, if you're not totally sure you want to book it!
2. Please read the description to see if it answers your questions, because I tried to give as much detail as possible about the house and its location.
3. Please remember our house is a small and well-loved home, that comes with 2 cats, so while it will be clean and uncluttered, it is not a minimalist, sterile, personality-free hotel. :) If you want a separate studio with no strings attached, I suggest you look at the Airbnb guest studios that are not full time homes, such as the "Gorgeous Greek Studio" https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/71568, "Bike Friendly Apartment" https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/169624 , "Missisippi Ave Private Studio" https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/673035, "Your Home Away from Home" https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/310976 or "Home Base" https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/216796 .

In the sunny orange living room enjoy relaxing or reading in an armchair, playing music, using wi-fi, or spinning old LPs on the record player. Watch a movie on the 80" projector screen if you brought your own laptop (or one may be available on request), or stream music into the speakers. Read the the backlog of New Yorker magazines, or one of our many books.

We have one cozy lilac bedroom with a comfy full size bed with fluffy down comforter. At night enjoy the overhead reading lights to browse those New Yorkers.
Couch is available for 3rd person.

In the spacious, eat-in kitchen, enjoy cooking your meals on a gas range with our full set of kitchen cooking and baking supplies. We have a wide selection of cast iron and stainless steel cookware. Sit down at the vintage diner table for a meal.

Enjoy a bath in the old fashioned clawfoot tub (candles available on request ;).

We prefer a scent-free, all natural home. We have city curbside composting, so we hope that our guests take advantage of our compost and recycling facilities. We use all natural cleaners such as citrus cleaner, vinegar, baking soda, all natural dish soap and laundry detergent.

Bikes may be available for rent.

As part of the rental, we ask that you refill the food and water dishes for the 2 cats occasionally, and keep one of them indoors at all times.

Elliott, the indoor girl cat, has no tail and extra toes and is often entertaining, and occasionally cuddly. She is not one of those annoying cats that insists on getting onto your lap all the time, but she will probably like to sleep on the bed with you. She will generally sleep on the foot of the bed, not up against you--she likes her "personal space" like you or I do :) However, if you don't like cats this is probably not the home for you!
Miles, the fluffy long-haired outdoor cat, is occasionally happy to come inside and get some petting-attention!

BIKE to coffee shops, bars and casual browsing on Fremont street, or the busy hub of Alberta Street, with pie shops, coffee bars, drink bars with fireplaces, massage therapists, art galleries, clothing stores and taquerias.

BUS to the Hollywood district - the Hollywood Theater shows movies you won't see anywhere else, or enjoy brewpubs, book and antique stores, and sushi, Chinese restaurants, and bakeries.
Or BUS, BIKE, or drive to downtown and to Southeast Portland!

  • We really enjoyed our stay, and the company of Elliot the cat (we didn't see much of Miles)!. Esther's place provided us with the perfect retreat at a very affordable price. We enjoyed our time-in listening to records & watching movies on the projector screen. The kitchen is fully stocked with all the utensils you could need. (If you like cats, like us) We would highly recommend staying at this very cute & funky bungalow.

  • We stayed at this lovely house for 3 nights. The location was convenient, close to bus stops, grocery stores and restaurants. The house was pretty clean. There was free parking on the street right in front of the house. The host was accommodating and the cats were lovely. We would love to return again!

  • We loved staying here. It's a really quiet neighborhood and the city is easily accessible by bike. The hosts left us some excellent bike/ped maps and an incredible amount of info and suggestions. The house is clean and bright, the cats are fun. You'd never get to listen to records in a hotel room! Free street parking! I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who is bringing a bike to Portland. It's so fun riding around all those flat quiet streets!

  • My partner and I stayed at Ester's for a weekend. The living spaces were comfortable, and we were happy to have the privacy of the entire home. The bed was very comfortable, the living space ample and the bathroom clean and organized. Ester was available for questions before and during out stay. She was helpful in providing bicycle maps and highlighted good routes for our bike trips into the downtown area.
I was a little surprised by needing to care for her cats when we were there. Maybe I missed this in the description. One cat was outside and easy to keep fed and watered. The inside cat required more feeding and kept us awake the first night by clawing at the door to the bedroom. We remedied this the second night by putting a few pillows on the floor just outside the bedroom door and were able to get a good night sleep.

All and all, the experience was comfortable and positive.

  • This home is just so fun! Very comfortable. Esther was very kind and accommodating-- offering a list of things we could use in the house. Perfect location- very quiet and private. House was a bit hard to find because it is hidden behind bushes when we were trying to find the house at nighttime. They're very environment friendly- recycling, composting, and have organic stuff in the kitchen. Their cat is just so cute-- really keeps to herself but loves to have attention whenever she feels like it. Esther is awesome about communicating via text or e-mail promptly if I had any questions.

  • The house was clean. The cats were sweet.

  • My husband and I came down from Seattle for the Portland Blues Fest over 4th of July and were very lucky to find such a wonderful place to stay!! We were greeted at the front door by Elliott - an adorable and playful Manx cat. And later Miles the outdoor kitty showed up to get some loves and wet food. So much fun to have a a rental house and rental kitties!
The house is warm and light and the bed is comfy. It was easy to get downtown - about 15 min drive down Sandy Blvd. Plenty of street parking, grocery store, Safeway, a few minutes away, quiet neighborhood - it was perfect for us. Communication and key pass off with host was easy as well. I would definitely recommend this place!
