About this listing
The house is a modest early 1920s bungalow that features our funky sense of style and two adorable cats. Enjoy our brightly colored home in the summer sunshine or even in the grey Portland winter.
Before you try to book, READ THIS:
This home has 2 adorable & friendly cats. 1 of them stays indoors and sleeps at the foot of the bed. If you cannot hang with this, this is not the home for you! (She will keep you up if you don't let her sleep on the bed!)
We will give a $10 discount per DAY if you agree to feed the cats & give one of them medication (rubbed in her ear) in the morning and at night. Otherwise, we will have someone coming over to do those things while you are staying here. Please mention if you are willing to do this when you attempt to book.
In the sunny orange living room enjoy relaxing or reading in an armchair, playing music, using wi-fi, or spinning old LPs on the record player. Watch a movie on the 80" projector screen, or stream music into the speakers. Read the the backlog of New Yorker magazines, or one of our many books.
We have one cozy lilac bedroom with a comfy full size bed with fluffy down comforter. At night enjoy the overhead reading lights to browse those New Yorkers.
In the spacious, eat-in kitchen, enjoy cooking your meals on a gas range with our full set of kitchen cooking and baking supplies. We have a wide selection of cast iron and stainless steel cookware. Sit down at the vintage diner table for a meal.
Enjoy a bath in the old fashioned clawfoot tub.
We prefer a scent-free, all natural home. We ask that our guests recycle and compost. We use all natural cleaners such as citrus cleaner, vinegar, baking soda, all natural dish soap and laundry detergent.
Bikes may be available for rent.
As part of the rental, we ask that keep one of the cats indoors at all times.
Elliott, the indoor girl cat, has no tail and extra toes and is often entertaining, and occasionally cuddly. She is not one of those annoying cats that insists on getting onto your lap or in your face all the time, but she will probably sleep on the foot of the bed.
Miles, the fluffy long-haired outdoor cat, is very shy, but might warm up to you if you pet him outside, and he's occasionally happy to come inside and relax!
Please remember our house is a small and well-loved home, that comes with 2 cats, so while it will be clean and uncluttered, it is not a minimalist, sterile, personality-free hotel. :)
You won't even have time to enjoy the home itself - you're in Portland! Check the 'map' for my guidebook to things you can walk to near our house.
WALK to a nearby 1st run beautiful vintage movie theater with high definition screen and sound, grocery (Safeway), a real live old-fashioned soda fountain (!), karaoke bar, and Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, Venezuelan, and Mexican restaurants.
BIKE to coffee shops, bars and casual browsing on Fremont street, or the busy hub of Alberta Street, with pie shops, coffee bars, drink bars with fireplaces, massage therapists, art galleries, clothing stores and taquerias.
BUS to the Hollywood district - the Hollywood Theater shows movies you won't see anywhere else, or enjoy brewpubs, book and antique stores, and sushi, Chinese restaurants, and bakeries.
Or BUS, BIKE, or drive to downtown and to Southeast Portland!
You will have our entire home and yard.
Interaction with Guests
We will be out of town, but we are available by text, phone, and email.
Sweet 1920s neighborhood with cute houses and many amenities.
Street and driveway parking available. Close access to the #12 bus and MAX light rail. About $15 + tip taxi ride from airport.
No smoking indoors. Smoking allowed outside if you discard your butts properly. :)
The house is in the midst of an overhaul, so the yard isn't much to look at-yet. :)
CATS: Feed both cats in the morning, afternoon/evening, and before bed. Elliott (indoor cat) needs .1 mL of syringe medication rubbed in the hairless part of her ear - use provided glove fingers. Give them petting as they require.
CLEANING: We do not charge a cleaning fee, so we ask that our guests do a cursory tidy up before they leave (leave it like you found it).
We really enjoyed our stay, and the company of Elliot the cat (we didn't see much of Miles)!. Esther's place provided us with the perfect retreat at a very affordable price. We enjoyed our time-in listening to records & watching movies on the projector screen. The kitchen is fully stocked with all the utensils you could need. (If you like cats, like us) We would highly recommend staying at this very cute & funky bungalow.
We stayed at this lovely house for 3 nights. The location was convenient, close to bus stops, grocery stores and restaurants. The house was pretty clean. There was free parking on the street right in front of the house. The host was accommodating and the cats were lovely. We would love to return again!
space was super cute, clean, and the company of two sweet kitties was great! will definitely visit again!
We loved staying here. It's a really quiet neighborhood and the city is easily accessible by bike. The hosts left us some excellent bike/ped maps and an incredible amount of info and suggestions. The house is clean and bright, the cats are fun. You'd never get to listen to records in a hotel room! Free street parking! I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who is bringing a bike to Portland. It's so fun riding around all those flat quiet streets!
My partner and I stayed at Ester's for a weekend. The living spaces were comfortable, and we were happy to have the privacy of the entire home. The bed was very comfortable, the living space ample and the bathroom clean and organized. Ester was available for questions before and during out stay. She was helpful in providing bicycle maps and highlighted good routes for our bike trips into the downtown area.
I was a little surprised by needing to care for her cats when we were there. Maybe I missed this in the description. One cat was outside and easy to keep fed and watered. The inside cat required more feeding and kept us awake the first night by clawing at the door to the bedroom. We remedied this the second night by putting a few pillows on the floor just outside the bedroom door and were able to get a good night sleep.
All and all, the experience was comfortable and positive.
This home is just so fun! Very comfortable. Esther was very kind and accommodating-- offering a list of things we could use in the house. Perfect location- very quiet and private. House was a bit hard to find because it is hidden behind bushes when we were trying to find the house at nighttime. They're very environment friendly- recycling, composting, and have organic stuff in the kitchen. Their cat is just so cute-- really keeps to herself but loves to have attention whenever she feels like it. Esther is awesome about communicating via text or e-mail promptly if I had any questions.
