About the property.
Charming Courtyard House with 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. 3 En-suite bathrooms and 3 bedrooms are AC equipped.
A lovely courtyard house in Galle, Sri Lanka with a 50ft swimming pool. Close to Galle Fort and Unawatuna. Tropical, green and lovely.
This is a delightful example of a period house from the colonial era. It is set around a courtyard featuring a pond with tropical fish, turtles and sweet scented frangipani tree at its centre.
It has been tastefully restored by the Hempel Family who have been living there for the last 10 years.
The house is surrounded by a lush tropical garden which is a bird watchers paradise. Monkeys, mongoose, monitor lizards and squirrels dart amongst the trees.
Whether having a lazy breakfast of Nalani’s delicious egg hoppers, or a long lunch of Sri Lankan curry, sambals and chutneys, (all from local produce or catch of the day) this is a place to relax and unwind. The open dining room faces onto the jungle, where women collecting firewood and buffalo stroll past.
Guests can swim in our 50 ft swimming pool or at Thalpe beach just fifteen minutes away.
At sunset, stroll through village streets, past corner shop vendors and paddy fields. Light an oil lamp at the local Buddhist temple, view a private show of Kandyian dances performing the devil dance under the stars, or just listen to the night sounds of the crickets, watching the fireflies with a glass of chilled wine in hand.
At the end of a long day, curl up in one of the antique four poster beds knowing the house is secure under the watchful eye of Saman our nightwatchman, 2 dogs and Minky the cat.

We visited this lovely house with another family. Eduard was there to welcome us and we felt incredibly welcome and at home. He was very helpful and gave us lots of information to help make our stay great. The lovely cook looked after us so well and not only whipped up a delicious curry but also was able to cook child friendly food as well. The house is stunning, and the children loved all the animals that shared it with us - the dogs, cat, turtles, frogs, snakes, monkeys, and especially the HUGE monitor lizard that took a quick dip in the pool after we'd got out!
Eduard also arranged a driver and minivan for us for bigger trips as there were 8 of us.
I can't recommend the lovely house and staff highly enough. It feels like a real home. It was a great introduction to Sri Lanka, especially being amongst the villages rather than in the busy city. We do hope we'll be able to come and visit again soon.
Well the house was gorgeous! Everything we had hoped for and more. It was a real treat to stay in a house rather than hotels or guest houses. The staff couldn't do enough to help and it was amazing to have our own personal cook! (Her curry dinners are a must to try) The open air bathroom upstairs deserved a few photos but we were nervous about leaving our toiletries in there in case the monkeys took a fancy to them! It was great to sit on the patio eating breakfast and watch the monkeys playing in the trees. Eduard was a pleasure to do business with. He bent over backwards to accommodate us and even made an effort to meet up with us in Columbo at the end of our trip.
The location was good in that it was midway between Galle and Unawatuna and there was a small local village (with an excellent Indian restaurant) within walking distance. The only drawback was having to get tuk tuks every time we wanted to go out. We soon organised our personal tuk tuk drivers though who were virtually at our disposal for the week!
