The Space

Looking for something a little different? Something a little exotic, a little adventurous, but still with that certain amount of luxury? Welcome to Casa Selva, The Jungle House.

Set in the progressive, boutique community of Balcones de Majagual, Casa Selva is open air design and living at it’s finest. Located 12km from the lovely town of San Juan del Sur, Casa Selva was designed by the renowned architect Matthew Faulkner (Morgan’s Rock Eco-Lodge) and represents some of the most luxurious, progressively ecologically friendly accommodations in San juan del Sur. This private villa is perched on a ridge overlooking the Pacific Ocean, allowing for both stunning water and jungle views . Enjoy daily visits from the communities local troop of friendly howler monkeys, and in the winter months watch humpback whale breaching from the front deck as they are arriving in the warm waters of the Nicaraguan Pacific to nurse their young.. Being nestled in one of Central America’s largest private wildlife corridors, sightings of sloths, parakeets, iguanas, margays and hummingbirds are common occurrences for guests at Casa Selva.

Casa Selva is more than a rental unit, it is in fact, us, the owners, part time home. As a result, we ensure it is always well stocked and maintained, and lacks that cold, rental space feeling. Above all, Casa Selva is our home, and we are delighted to share it with you in our absence.

Casa Selva is a 2 bedroom, 2 1/4 bathroom home boosting high ceilings, cool polished concrete floors, and a state of the art screen system that allows for fresh air to flow through the home constantly. Both large bedrooms contain beautiful stone, en-suite bathrooms, large storage spaces, and views of either the ocean or jungle. In keeping with our eco-consciousness, the piping hot water in both bathrooms is heated by the sun with our solar hot water system. Both bedrooms rooms are well appointed with fine linens, pillows and comfortable beds.

Attention to detail such as large Japanese style sliding doors, unique wood work (all obtained from hurricane felled trees and sustainable timber) stone accents, professional photography and decor give the home a serene and peaceful feel, perfect for relaxation, honeymoons, or a place to rest after a long day of surfing. Casa Selva provides you with the essential modern conveniences such Wi-fi available in the home and on the grounds, flat screen tv, dvd, video library and comfortable furniture from Simplemente Maderas. Boundaries between indoors and outdoors blend when sliding walls in the living room open to a large patio with ocean and jungle views.

A comfortable work space with desk is provided for your use, making working from the home easy and stress free. Our brand new battery-backup system provides silent power for the house even during Nicaragua's frequent, brief power outages, allowing you to work uninterrupted during these times.

As devoted foodies, the we make sure the kitchen is stocked with everything one would need to make a gourmet meal. Gas range, pots, pans, hand mixer, magic bullet, spices, large bowls, and dishes and cutlery for eight people. A coffee maker, french press, stove top espresso maker and coffee grinder allow you to enjoy your cup of world class Nicaraguan coffee whatever way you prefer. A traditional north american style propane BBQ is available for your use, as well as all the necessary BBQ equipment.

Located just outside the home is the incredible 15 meter infinity pool boasting views of the jungle and ocean. The pool is shared amongst four homes, but rarely do you find yourself sharing it with others. This is the perfect place to watch the sunset over the pacific in the cool, comfortable pool waters. Chairs are provided for your use, and this is an excellent spot to simply relax, read a book, and just be.

Casa Selva is located either a short 15 minute walk or short 5 minute drive down the private road to some of the finest beaches in southern Nicaragua, Playa Maderas, Playa Majagual and Playones. There are surf board rentals, and a small selection of cafes to make your day at the beach both comfortable and enjoyable.

An English and Spanish speaking “meet and greet” is included in the cost of rental. Our host can help you arrange a variety of activities in the area including zip ling, horse back riding, boat cruises, surf lessons, professional onsite massages, and spanish lessons. This home also enjoys the benefits of secure private parking and 24 hour security in a locked, gated community. Maid and pool service is included, laundry service on request.

Please don’t hesitate to ask us for tips about the town and surrounding area. We are happy to provide you with our list of favorites, be it activities or restaurants.

A four wheel drive vehicle high clearance vehicle is strongly recommended for accessing not only Casa Selva, but the majority of the beaches north and south of San Juan del Sur. We are located 12km from town on country dirt roads, and seeing as though the house is perched on a hill from the main road a 4 x 4 vehicle will make your stay not only easier, but more fun as you enjoy these beautiful country roads. Let us help you arrange a vehicle in town with one of our contacts at a discounted rate!

Please inquire about our monthly and long term rates.

The Neighborhood

One of the best parts of staying at Casa Selva is the quiet that allows you to enjoy the sounds of the jungle. On days when the breezes are gentle you can hear the ocean crashing. Every day you can sit and enjoy your morning coffee with the parakeets singing and the Mono Congo monkey's hanging in the trees around the house. Fall asleep to the sound of crickets singing outside the house. Unlike many of the homes in and around San Juan Del Sur, Casa Selva is unique in its setting. Perched on a ridge, the home is located in a private boutique community, containing 11 homes on roughly 100 acres stretching from the jungle to the ocean. There is enough space between homes to enjoy complete privacy without feeling alone or isolated. The lack of light pollution allows you to swim in the pool on clear nights by moonlight, something not to be missed. We provide 24 hour on site security, cleaning service and management without being intrusive. We are also an ecologic conscious community. What does this mean? We do not believe in spraying heavy pesticides like local hotels do to control bugs, what this does mean is you may encounter a few critters in and around the house, but we are not poisoning the food chain from the bottom up. All of our actions have far reaching consequences, and we want monkeys and parrots to visit the home. We heat our water with solar heat (and there is no lack of that!) and all our furniture and wood in the home is reclaimed fallen hardwoods, ethically sourced in north east Nicaragua.

  • Beautiful home in the jungle - loved the design and furnishing details. Open air concept meant we could hear all the incredible sounds of the jungle from the safety of casa selva. Felt very safe, security and on-site staff are excellent. Gabrielle, the contact who showed us in, is also excellent and kind enough to provide us with plenty of local information, tips and suggestions.

Thanks for sharing your home with us, Laura & Joel! Made our honeymoon experience all the more memorable.

  • We loved every minute of our stay at Casa Selva. My husband and I and our two kids (ages: 2 and 5) could not get enough of the view and beauty of this place. The beds are so comfortable, and the house provided everything we were looking for. The staff at Remax were amazing. I really appreciated the 'meet and greet' when we arrived. Gabriella from Remax took us to the local bread shop, grocery store, fish market and coffee shop. We felt safe on the property thanks to the wonderful staff. When we first chose this place, Laura was quick to email me back with details and information.

  • A fantastic experience at Casa Selva.

We travelled with our 2 year old son. The home is located about 30 minutes from town. We needed a 4x4 because of the terrain. The house is beautifully designed and lets in a lot of natural light and fresh air. It was wonderful to wake up to the warm breeze and birds singing.

We all loved it and would happily go back. It was clean and safe and made our vacation a real vacation.

  • Casa Selva, a truly remarkable home in the heart of the jungle. Our party of 5 stayed at Casa Selva for nearly 2 weeks and we loved every minute of it! The view from the balcony is breathtaking; we spent our mornings and evenings watching the sun rise and fall over the pacific. The Jungle House is exactly how it looks in the pictures - with all the amenities you need and want while on vacation. Joel and Laura are excellent hosts and will help you with any questions you have! I highly recommend Casa Selva to anyone looking to travel to Nicaragua - we would stay again in a heart beat!

  • Awesome place! - a mixture of modern luxury and rustic simplicity. We are a family of four doing an around the world trip so like to have our own space to make meals, do homework, etc. Casa Selva was perfect! Everything is exactly as pictured. When the power went out one evening, the staff guard came by to make sure we were OK. Gabriela and Rudy were there to help us when the coffee maker blew a gasket. Joel and Laura checked in with us to make sure everything was going well. Honestly, we couldn't have asked for a better experience!

  • AMAZING! The house is one of the best houses we've stayed in ever, hands down. Clean, isolated and what a great view! Mandy was a great help and her map to the house is the best map we've ever seen. Will definitely visit again.

  • My friend and I had a lovely 4-night stay in this jungle perch and enjoyed the hoots and howls and poolside visits of the howler monkeys. We had some standoffs with mosquitos and beetles but hey, it's the jungle (thankfully we didn't have any scorpion or tarantula visits). Laura and Gabby were responsive, Gabby provided a great little meet and greet (even as she was about to give birth). One thing I would note is that the infinity pool is not adjacent / attached to the home — as we had thought — and is actually shared with 4 other homes along the same stretch. It is a very short walk down the road but this isn't entirely clear in the listing of any of these homes (there are at least 2 other listings here that share this pool) and while it might be fun to meet the neighbors, it is something worth knowing ahead of time. It still beats an ugly bright blue pool stuck in the middle of a hotel complex any day. We stayed during rainy / low season so had a little weather to deal with but the home provides a lovely respite from the rain and beautiful viewpoint. Benefit to visiting at this time were the EMPTY beaches... and pretty much empty everything. I'm not sure what the high season is like, but we visited Playa Majagual, Marsella and Maderas and were the only two people on any of them. The beauty of Majagual is slightly diminished by a big concrete wall of the development that sits on the shore, but if you walk all along the rocks to the left, there are beautiful formations to find. Just be careful when the tide is coming in! We took a half day catamaran ride as suggested by one of the other reviews and listed on the activities Gabby sent along. However, because we were only 2 and could not rent out the entire boat, we were joined by a group of twelve 21-year-olds from Managua. Falling down the stairs to the bathrooms, throwing up shots of Jager and Red Bull... not what we had really been expecting and frankly, Captain Zach was more into the attention from a slurring girl than driving the boat. Less rain, more sun would have made it all more tolerable!! We rented our car from Dollar rental and contrary to what travel guides might say, we found driving around pretty easy, even at night (just keep your eyes peeled...). Not all that different from driving in cities where you're accustomed to dodging people and bikes! As others mentioned, the road up to the house is rocky, rutted and steep and requires a 4x4. We left a 12-pack of Toña behind (?!?!) so I hope the next guests enjoy!!!

  • What an amazing adventure! A dream spot of tranquility amongst nature!! Very helpful and very well organized host. We have many fond memories and epic experiences to share. A must stop for Nicaragua.

  • I would recommend "casa selva" to anyone! We had such a beautiful stay here. The house is amazing, all amenities are taken care of and it was even more than what I expected. In a private/gated community, it is safe, and private. While not at all feeling too exclusive or removed from society. This house is the PERFECT place to stay in Nicaragua. Relaxing and close enough to everything. Thank you Joel and Laura! I had the best birthday here! I hope I get to Nicaragua again some time!

  • Joel and Laura communicated perfectly from start to finish. Casa Selva was an amazing experience and Gabby (On site host) was hugely helpful in helping my girlfriend and I get settled in. She even arranged for everything from shopping, to massages, to zip lines and of course 4X4 rental (this is a must, and makes the experience that much more adventurous, have Joel or Gabby put you in contact with John from classic cruisers.)

Top notch accommodations, in one of the best places I have ever stayed. Such a great experience, I look for forward to future visits to both SJDS and Casa Selva.

About
We are just two travel loving people who fell in love with the country of Nicaragua and ended up buying our dream home! While we try and spend as much time there as possible, occasionally, we do have to work- and we do want to keep discovering this amazing planet. While we are doing this, we are happy to offer homes in our community to others to enjoy and discover this truly amazing country! San Juan del Sur Nicaragua is the place to come for travellers who are looking for surf, sunshine and a little adventure, and we try our best to make our home a little piece of luxury to come and relax in between all that fun! Through renting our own personal home Casa Selva- I fell into assisting my amazing neighbours in Balcones de Majagual with renting their homes- the rest they say is history. You couldn't pick a better spot in Nicaragua- and you couldn't pick better guests than myself and my husband Joel!
