Looking for something a little different? Something a little exotic, a little adventurous, but still with that certain amount of luxury? Welcome to Casa Selva, The Jungle House.
Set in the progressive, boutique community of Balcones de Majagual, Casa Selva is open air design and living at it’s finest. Located 12km from the lovely town of San Juan del Sur, Casa Selva was designed by the renowned architect Matthew Faulkner (Morgan’s Rock Eco-Lodge) and represents some of the most luxurious, progressively ecologically friendly accommodations in San juan del Sur. This private villa is perched on a ridge overlooking the Pacific Ocean, allowing for both stunning water and jungle views . Enjoy daily visits from the communities local troop of friendly howler monkeys, and in the winter months watch humpback whale breaching from the front deck as they are arriving in the warm waters of the Nicaraguan Pacific to nurse their young.. Being nestled in one of Central America’s largest private wildlife corridors, sightings of sloths, parakeets, iguanas, margays and hummingbirds are common occurrences for guests at Casa Selva.
Casa Selva is more than a rental unit, it is in fact, us, the owners, part time home. As a result, we ensure it is always well stocked and maintained, and lacks that cold, rental space feeling. Above all, Casa Selva is our home, and we are delighted to share it with you in our absence.
Casa Selva is a 2 bedroom, 2 1/4 bathroom home boosting high ceilings, cool polished concrete floors, and a state of the art screen system that allows for fresh air to flow through the home constantly. Both large bedrooms contain beautiful stone, en-suite bathrooms, large storage spaces, and views of either the ocean or jungle. In keeping with our eco-consciousness, the piping hot water in both bathrooms is heated by the sun with our solar hot water system. Both bedrooms rooms are well appointed with fine linens, pillows and comfortable beds.
Attention to detail such as large Japanese style sliding doors, unique wood work (all obtained from hurricane felled trees and sustainable timber) stone accents, professional photography and decor give the home a serene and peaceful feel, perfect for relaxation, honeymoons, or a place to rest after a long day of surfing. Casa Selva provides you with the essential modern conveniences such Wi-fi available in the home and on the grounds, flat screen tv, dvd, video library and comfortable furniture from Simplemente Maderas. Boundaries between indoors and outdoors blend when sliding walls in the living room open to a large patio with ocean and jungle views.
A comfortable work space with desk is provided for your use, making working from the home easy and stress free. Our brand new battery-backup system provides silent power for the house even during Nicaragua's frequent, brief power outages, allowing you to work uninterrupted during these times.
As devoted foodies, the we make sure the kitchen is stocked with everything one would need to make a gourmet meal. Gas range, pots, pans, hand mixer, magic bullet, spices, large bowls, and dishes and cutlery for eight people. A coffee maker, french press, stove top espresso maker and coffee grinder allow you to enjoy your cup of world class Nicaraguan coffee whatever way you prefer. A traditional north american style propane BBQ is available for your use, as well as all the necessary BBQ equipment.
Located just outside the home is the incredible 15 meter infinity pool boasting views of the jungle and ocean. The pool is shared amongst four homes, but rarely do you find yourself sharing it with others. This is the perfect place to watch the sunset over the pacific in the cool, comfortable pool waters. Chairs are provided for your use, and this is an excellent spot to simply relax, read a book, and just be.
Casa Selva is located either a short 15 minute walk or short 5 minute drive down the private road to some of the finest beaches in southern Nicaragua, Playa Maderas, Playa Majagual and Playones. There are surf board rentals, and a small selection of cafes to make your day at the beach both comfortable and enjoyable.
An English and Spanish speaking “meet and greet” is included in the cost of rental. Our host can help you arrange a variety of activities in the area including zip ling, horse back riding, boat cruises, surf lessons, professional onsite massages, and spanish lessons. This home also enjoys the benefits of secure private parking and 24 hour security in a locked, gated community. Maid and pool service is included, laundry service on request.
Please don’t hesitate to ask us for tips about the town and surrounding area. We are happy to provide you with our list of favorites, be it activities or restaurants.

One of the best parts of staying at Casa Selva is the quiet that allows you to enjoy the sounds of the jungle. On days when the breezes are gentle you can hear the ocean crashing. Every day you can sit and enjoy your morning coffee with the parakeets singing and the Mono Congo monkey's hanging in the trees around the house. Fall asleep to the sound of crickets singing outside the house. Unlike many of the homes in and around San Juan Del Sur, Casa Selva is unique in its setting. Perched on a ridge, the home is located in a private boutique community, containing 11 homes on roughly 100 acres stretching from the jungle to the ocean. There is enough space between homes to enjoy complete privacy without feeling alone or isolated. The lack of light pollution allows you to swim in the pool on clear nights by moonlight, something not to be missed. We provide 24 hour on site security, cleaning service and management without being intrusive. We are also an ecologic conscious community. What does this mean? We do not believe in spraying heavy pesticides like local hotels do to control bugs, what this does mean is you may encounter a few critters in and around the house, but we are not poisoning the food chain from the bottom up. All of our actions have far reaching consequences, and we want monkeys and parrots to visit the home. We heat our water with solar heat (and there is no lack of that!) and all our furniture and wood in the home is reclaimed fallen hardwoods, ethically sourced in north east Nicaragua.
No public transport
Guests are required to have their own 4 x 4 transportation to stay at Casa Selva which we can assist with booking at discounted rates.
Other Things to Note
$10 fee for two people for use of washer dryer for week or part thereof. $20 for four
We seek guests who will take the time to enjoy the beauty and wildlife that our community has to offer. We assure you that your rental home will be outfitted as advertised and our staff will work with you to make your vacation special. Casa Selva is a non smoking home.
Vehicles required to be in four wheel drive, first gear at all times on property.
The photos of Casa Selva were, let's just say a little "too perfect". I was extremely skeptical that a guest home could be that beautiful.
... Well don't I look silly.
It was brilliant. Absolutely, positively, brilliant. I have never stayed at place where I can honestly say there is nothing, not a thing I would change.
My girlfriend and I wanted a little time alone from the city and this was exactly that. It was private, quiet, out-of-novel-romantic. Have I mentioned the sunsets? Oh. My. God.
We cooked every night which was simple and super fun as the unit has everything you could ask for. It was a breeze to grab items in town after Nicole showed us her kick-ass seafood spot.
Be prepared for the tough roads up to the unit and do do do get a 4x4. This is a must. It was a bit of a task the first time but we mastered it soon after. It's all part of the adventure.
I couldn't speak higher of the unit. The location. The beaches (you don't have to go far, the best beaches are just down the road). And the overall experience from the team.
Our pictures are proof, there isn't a moment where either one of us isn't smiling ear to ear. Our deepest thanks to Nicole, Gabi, Fransisco and the team at Casa Selva.

First of all, before going in the details, let's just say that the house is just simply amazing!
We were welcome by Gabriella, who was really great. She showed us around town the different places we would need during our stay, like where to buy good fish for dinner, or the best place in town for a coffee, imported goods, etc. It was really appreciated. Then we went to the house, where she explained us everything we needed to know.
The house is just as we expected it to be: stunning. Decorated with taste, the kitchen is well equipped, the view is amazing, you can watch unbelievable sunsets. Even though it was really hot outside, there were always a good breeze in the house since it's all open. The shared pool was for the five houses around, but we were always the only one in it, and after a good day at the beach, we were happy to have access. The howler monkeys were the best alarm clock in the morning.
You definitely need a 4x4 to access the house, it's not optional. The guys were REALLY happy to drive a little of dirt roads! We went daily in SJDS and tried different beaches, it's easy to drive around.
The communication with Laura, Nicole, and Gabriella was fast and they were all really helpful. They put us in contact with the car rental company and also answered our questions when we were in town.
So if your looking for something a little different, surrounded by nature and calm, it's a real paradise.
Thanks for sharing your amazing house with us. We felt like home! I will highly recommend this place to everyone.
Laura and Joel's place is as beautiful as the pictures suggest, and the open-air setup led to some of the best sleep of my life! I suggest this house for groups that are looking for quiet, more remote accommodation with an amazing view. The set-up ended up working great for my group (5 females in late 20s). We woke up every morning, did yoga on the patio, made breakfast and then headed to the beach for the day. We bought groceries to make dinner at the house most nights, talked and enjoyed the view and then repeated pretty much the whole week! :-) Also, it should be noted that Laura and Joel have a great team that will support you for the entirety of your stay (including booking excursions etc). We were all very grateful for the help!
For those looking to party/ spend several late nights out on the town, I would suggest a closer place since this one is substantial drive from the city center. Also, don't rent this house if no one in your group is comfortable driving a 4x4 up steep terrain!
However, for those looking to get away, recharge and enjoy the beaches and culture of San Juan Del Sur, I highly recommend this place.
We absolutely loved our stay at Casa Selva. Communication with Laura was fantastic as well as Gabriela, her woman on the ground in San Juan Del Sur. Both were incredibly helpful and took great care of us. The house itself is stunning and it was almost difficult to tear ourselves away from hanging out there to go to the beach and other activities. We would definitely stay there again.
Laura was so helpful in the run-up to our stay at Casa Selva and we felt utterly confident that the house would deliver everything the listing promised. And sure enough it did! What a fabulous and quirky casa. It was so exciting to live there for just a few days and the location was also spectacular. We almost felt that we were living outside sometimes especially when the wind was whistling through. The kitchen was obviously equipped by a foodie though could I get the very smart coffee machine to work? No worries as there were plenty of lo-tech devices.
The local beaches were spectacular and wonderfully laid back - perfect for a relaxing break. And the beds were SO comfortable.
I am scratching my head to think of anything that we could have improved and all I have come up with is a slightly sore head!
The Place was great! Nicole was extremely helpful with showing us around and trying to make us comfortable. Definitely need a 4x4!! The house was amazing and had amazing views of the jungle. The beach access was great and on point! My only complaint is that showers were cold and inconsistent, but overall it was a definite experience!
Thanks Summer, you were awesome to have stay and we are so glad you had a great time and were comfy at the house. I'm sorry to hear about the showers, they are solar heated so it takes a little time for the hot water to get from the tank on the roof to the shower, we'll be sure to let all our future guests know that the showers just need a bit longer to warm up than they may be used to!
This house is a gem! The pictures are very accurate. It's an open-air house but kept cool enough to be comfortable throughout the stay. Everyone else is correct about needing a 4x4. The roads leading to the house are pretty treacherous, but it makes for a truly secluded and unique experience. I didn't reach much about the beaches in other reviews, but we found them to be the highlight of the trip, especially Playa Majagual. We built a fire on the next beach over with no one around and it was insanely romantic! We even scavenged for our own sea urchins and cooked them over the fire. So cool! Others have mentioned the pervasiveness of bugs, but we had no problems. We didn't even use the mosquito nets at night and we escaped with nary a bite!
Laura and the property manager Gabby are extremely responsive and helpful. They answered all of our questions before and during our stay with rapid speed. I highly recommend this trip!
One other additional note: We flew into Liberia, Costa Rica and needed an experienced guide to usher us through the complex border. If you do the same, I recommend contacting Edwin Ruiz at Macua Tours. They were incredibly helpful in our transfer to our 4x4 rental in San Juan del Sur.

About the Host, Laura (And Joel)
We are just two travel loving people who fell in love with the country of Nicaragua and ended up buying our dream home! While we try and spend as much time there as possible, occasionally, we do have to work- and we do want to keep discovering this amazing planet. While we are doing this, we are happy to offer homes in our community to others to enjoy and discover this truly amazing country! San Juan del Sur Nicaragua is the place to come for travellers who are looking for surf, sunshine and a little adventure, and we try our best to make our home a little piece of luxury to come and relax in between all that fun! Through renting our own personal home Casa Selva- I fell into assisting my amazing neighbours in Balcones de Majagual with renting their homes- the rest they say is history. You couldn't pick a better spot in Nicaragua- and you couldn't pick better guests than myself and my husband Joel!
