The Space

Plumfield Stable is a family homestead that is located on 230-acres of beautiful, rolling farmland located within the Eurkea Maple Woods of Wisconsin's Driftless Region. It is an active horse farm with both indoor and outdoor arenas. Supervised, in season trail rides are available on our homestead for an affordable fee for our guests. While you're here, you will enjoy the beauty of the hills and valleys as you view the immediate area from our ridgetop location and the quiet setting on a dead-end road. In addition to the breathtaking night sky and its incomprable display of stars, we often have an unobstructed view of sunrises and sunsets.
You'll see our Amish neighbors farming their land or heading to town in their buggies. You are also likely to see deer and wild turkeys in the fields.
Family Friendly? For the interest of children, there is a neat playhouse, as well as a 3-level tree house to explore. In the spring and summer, the children can also enjoy the baby ducks, baby goats, and baby rabbits. There might also be St. Bernard puppies and adorable kittens to play with! For the toddlers, there is an enclosed play area with a sandbox and swings.

  • We had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend at Plumfield farm, and especially enjoyed meeting the horses, the Amish farrier who was working on their hooves, the sunsets and the firepit under the starry sky. The Feltons are such nice people who really made us feel welcome. It was great to be in the countryside for a few days, and I left feeling totally refreshed.

  • We had a wonderful long weekend. The Feltons are fantastic hosts & genuinely nice people. The loft was clean, comfortable and well kept. The scenery was breathtaking. We strolled along the trails on horseback and did a little hiking. We fed carrots to the horses, rabbits, and goat, we pet the dogs, and enjoyed our time with the animals. We made a fire in the pit behind the loft and gazed up at the beautiful night sky. The Feltons made us feel at home and we had free reign to explore the Plumfield property. I had read all the reviews before booking this trip and figured if it was half as good as people said, it would be a success. After having experienced it for myself I can tell you the truth of-it is words can not describe the beauty of Plumfield or the graciousness of our hosts.
Thank you Mr. & Mrs. Felton.

  • Ron and Carol -- and the horses, bunnies, ducks, rooster, and stray cat -- are excellent hosts. The location is simply beautiful -- the heart of Amish country in Western Wisconsin -- and there is plenty to do, from riding horses with the Feltens to touring the local Amish community, picking apples, visiting a pumpkin patch, antiquing, and more. The proximity to LaCrosse makes it easy to spend a day at the Children's Museum as well.

The kitchen is serviceable although it's a little small. (But we did all our cooking there.) The house was a little buggy but there was a handy fly-swatter. Another reviewer noted that wi-fi is only reliably accessible in one corner of the house, and I also found this to be true. This was great during the day because it encouraged family/together time, although I had hoped to catch up on work in the evenings and that was too challenging. When we were inside we played games and watched a few movies (the house has a TV/DVD/VHS player), but it was much more fun to be outside. The house has a big concrete section in the yard that is frozen for hockey in the winter; during October we used it to play soccer and practice bike-riding with the little ones. We didn't take advantage of the fire pit but hope to do that next time.

Carol and Ron go out of their way to be friendly and hospitable. (Carol even loaned me apple cider vinegar so that I could bake bread!) This was a great experience for our family, and judging from the comments in their guestbook, it's an overall great place to stay.

  • So enjoyed our two night stay at Plumfield, with the Feltens as our hosts. The setting was beautiful, the energy peaceful, the hosts welcoming and gracious. My friend and I felt very much at home. Had to work a bit to find a spot in the Loft to connect with internet, but decided in this environment it just was not that big of a deal. The bunnies were delightful, the horses beautiful, the ducks comical. Enjoyed exploring Viroqua, and the orchards at Gays Mills. The Feltens have a very interesting life story. I seriously am hoping there is a book someday, as they have much to teach through their actions. Now, you will need to book some nights there so you can learn something about what kind of hearts open their home to 18 adopted children, some with significant special needs. Special people, special place. We look forward to a return visit!

  • What a slice of rural heaven in Amish country. Carol and Rob were great hosts although we hardly got to see them. We thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet, not to mention the HUGE living area! Badger's Crossing in town was a GREAT recommendation and we had several meals there - all top notch.

  • This is a very comfortable loft and a great place for children. Our toddler had a wonderful time feeding the goats, petting the bunnies, and playing with trucks in the sandbox. My wife and I enjoyed taking a hike on the horse trails and having dinner while watching the sun set over the rolling hills. The Felten's are very warm hosts and helped to make our stay truly enjoyable.

  • This is our second year coming to the Felton's, we loved it even more this year, the additional pets for the kids really made a difference. This is the perfect spot for a getaway to reconnect with family and loved ones!

We look forward to coming back next year with our family!

  • Had a blast at the farm and the loft was perfect for the four of us, and the beds were super comfortable. We really had a great time enjoying the animals, especially the city kids. We loved the firepit behind the loft where we had a fire every night with lots of s'mores. The weather was beautiful and I look forward to staying again.

  • We had a great time with the Feltens. The place was clean and well-prepared, the grounds were beautiful, there was more to do on the farm than we could fit in... it was the perfect vacation. I'd highly recommend this place to anyone- particularly those with kids. I loved it and we'll definitely be back.

  • My family and I greatly enjoyed staying on the Felten's farm. Our daughters were especially enamored of the baby rabbits. The apartment was clean and nicely decorated with a "Wild West" theme. The Feltens thoughtfully provided breakfast groceries (milk, juice, cereal, jam, and bagels.) The farm is set in a beautiful location, and we found it very quiet and peaceful. Definitely recommended for anyone wishing to get away from it all!

About
My husband, Ron, and I are in our 70's and we have shared 49 meaningful years of marriage together. In 1972, we purchased a 120 acres of farmland and moved here from Wausau, WI. Later we purchased another adjacent 120 acres of farmland. Our farm has been home to an unusually large family of biological and adopted children, all of whom are now grown. Our farm remains family-friendly. Our family has been supported by my husband's CPA practice which he operates out of our home. The property with its hills and valleys is indescribably beautiful during all seasons of the year. The surrounding area, home to many Amish families, is quiet and offers a variety of activities for vacationers.
