The Space

Living in the city-center, absolutely quiet, in a green area, with direct sea access- sounds like paradise? Yes, it is! Our house has a million dollar view - and is located in a very simple neighbourhood, right in between the most expensive districts of Salvador!
We are renting 3 guestrooms with small balcony facing Bahia de Todos os Santos.

Our house has huge verandas, is open & fresh, the livingroom is a loft; and we even have a small garden! You can use / share the american kitchen ( low standard), there are 3 bathrooms in the house - one on each floor, we have a washingmachine.

Just around the corner, you'll find supermarkets, cultural institutes, theaters, language schools… Barra Beach or Campo Grande are just 10 minutes walk away…
there is a direct bus from the aiport, a lot of other busses in all directions… taxi to pelourinho is just 10 reais, direct bus to rio vermelho…
we are looking forward to meet interesting people!
PS: we speak portuguese, english, french, italien, spanish, german, dutch… and communicate in any langage!

PSS::: IT'S QUIET DIFFICULT TO FIND US; THAT'S WHY WE HAVE ONLY CHECK IN DURING THE DAYTIME.
ATTENTION: Check-In only possible between 10:00 a.m and 6:00 pm.
NOT INCLUDED ARE:
Drinking water
Cleanig fee / 50.- / week;
using the washing machine is 10.- Reais/wash

Guest Access

We have a complex of two houses; there are a lot of common spaces, like verandas and livingrooms.
Since 2014, we even have a huge terrace (not children safe) offering a gorgeous view over the bay.
Everybody respects the privacy of the other guests - there is enough space for being alone or sharing good company!
We provide:
• a private room with a real bed & linnen
• no towels!
• a kitchen to use
• no food!
bathrooms are or individual or in common, you'll see in the ad.

Interaction with Guests

Just like we feel it! Communication is one of our passions – and being on our own as well…
Everybody is free.
It's just like it happens, no rules… !

The Neighborhood

Vila Brandão is one of the best neighborhoods in Salvador. Located in between the most expensive and central areas of Salvador (Vitoria, Graça, Barra), it offers the feeling of a small village: 200 inhabitants, just a few houses near the sea, in the middle of a green aerea. Real Brazilian life, a bohemian mixture of fishers, working class people, artists, some students, some workless guys, a few strangers… teachers and dreamers.
We have a community "Mini-shop and instant food", a few bars and a lot of fresh fish and fresh fruits…

Getting around

Airport Bus Stopp just on the square, a lot of busses passing by, taxi station

Other Things to Note

We are living in a community (favela). It is not dangerous, we know all our neighbors personally. For our community, the interaction with you, our guests, is very important. They have the oopportunity to talk normally to strangers and middle class people, to have a beer together at the local bar, to get informations about other ways of living.
For you, it is an unique opportunity to break prejudices. If you stay longer with us, we organize projects together.

  • I had an amazing Time at sylvias place. Situated in a quiet small favela, i always felt safe. The inhabitants of the favela are very friendly. Despite the fact i dont speak any portuguese i could exchange smiles and conversations in spanish with the people of the favela. The room was simple but with enough comfort. The view from the room and the living room was just absolutely stunning!!!! Amazing view!!! I strongly recommend this location.

  • Having the chance to stay with Silvia and Celia in their wonderful house was a huge present for me. I know a lot of places in Salvador but Casa Matria is the best I've ever been. From the first moment I felt snugged like in a family, surrounded by an atmosphere of great openess and trust. It was indescribably beautiful to wake up in the morning with the sound of the plashing water and the music of Celia. The view is just overwhelming, the place, although located in the middle of the city, very quiet. A few steps away from the noisy streets and the folly of the carnaval I could completely relax. With Silvia and Celia I experienced so many insights in the beauty and problems of Brasil, Salvador, the favela and the adventures of life! If you are interested in what is going on around you, if you don't want to feel like an all-inclusive tourist, Casa Matria is the best place you can stay. Also, all the other travellers I met there are charming people with interesting and special lifes.
I will definately come back as soon as possible!

moi je me suis régalée !

  • Sylvia's place is beautiful, organic feeling, and in a great community close to many central things and overlooking the ocean..feels like you are staying at a friend's place. Its a nice place to meet other travellers who are interested in Bahian culture, arts, etc.

  • Silvia, Frank, and the others living together are involved in quite an interesting project. They have made a beautiful home (or homes, actually) through their own initiative and design. They are absolutely committed to being integrated into their local community, which is an intriguing mix of an informal neighborhood of poor people, within an otherwise very posh area of the city. I admire their commitment to this community, and their vision of bringing in international travelers to be a part of this section of the city that many people never see, which is exactly counter to the normal tourism routine.
There are surely more comfortable vacation homes, but all things considered the space is remarkably relaxed and comfortable, and one shouldn't come here to just have an easy time. People ought to come here to enjoy being with intelligent, artistic people who have a love of social justice and their community. With that as the starting point, you can also have a really nice time with an excellent view, and so on...

  • We stayed one night there.
Very nice view indeed, but we would have prefered to be aware that the flat is in the middle of a little favela. We didn't see Sylvia but we met Frank, who gave us the keys at our arrival after many text messages to reach him... We didn't see anyone at the morning for our leaving.
We also would have liked towels and hot shower...
Quite disappointing place for 52 euros a night.

  • I have conflicting feelings about my stay at Sylvia's. I loved the place, the view, the people I met and the overall experience. I am also grateful for the opportunity to have been able to perform at the Goethe Institute with Frank the house manager.

However, I had a few important concerns: a dead body was found in the favela the night I arrived, there was a police shooting the a few hours before I came home one evening and I "lost" 150 reals in the house (which I strongly believe were stolen). Also, the electricity was not consistent and there were no internet connect. I understand that many of these things are out of the owner's control, but these issues are material. Also, the house manager asked me for additional money for cleaning and cooking, which should have been advertised on the airbnb page. I really enjoyed my experience outside of these unfortunate events.
