The Space

Peaceful, private room with own bathroom available. 2 windows overlooking the front yard and north side of the house. Nice breezes. The bedroom is at the end of the hall, and the bathroom just off the hallway next door.

The house has hardwood floors, two fireplaces, a full kitchen, wireless and a big food garden instead of a lawn. My former lawn is now a thriving food garden.
Kid and senior friendly. I have an 3-year old, who runs around and plays. She awakens early, so sleeping in is not really easy. Do you like kids?

There is a large, sunny redwood deck in the private backyard, perfect for yoga.
Downtown Ojai is an easy twenty minute walk. Bring or rent a bike from a shop (50$ per week, Ojai Bicycles). You can store it in the garage.
Ojai Valley, "Valley of the Moon," is a serene, peaceful place. Ojai has the feel of a small American town, but has a hip culture, complete with exceptional local food and interesting people. You can slow down here, enjoy the sunshine, or hop on a bicycle and cycle past orange trees. Or if you like to cycle, ride down the bike path to the beach 13 miles (20 km) in Ventura. Santa Barbara is also a serene 40 minute drive north past Lake Casitas on the 150. There are many easy or challenging hiking trails, starting 5 minutes away in the Los Padres National Forest. Get a massage at a spa, take a yoga class at Lulu Bandhas, play tennis for free downtown, visit the Raptor Center, or try out the super restaurants.

There (email hidden)ly art scene downtown, including live music, and many different types of workshops. If you like bookstores, visit Bart's Books, or if you want to see a unique library, visit Krotona Library and explore the beautiful grounds. Or visit Meditation Mount on the full moon (or any day) to get a fabulous view of Ojai Valley. There are many festivals: the Ojai Film Festival, Music Festival, Lavender Festival, the Writer's Festival... Or get more involved in the community by and volunteer to plant trees, remove non- native vegetation in Libbey Park. There is an amazing Farmer's Market every Sunday from 9-1pm that features a lot of local produce.

My neighborhood is quiet, with lots of birds and kids. The neighbors keep and eye on things and are interesting, though rarely seen!

I 'm traveling less these days, but professionally I have a PhD in Political Science. For the past decade I've worked on educating citizens for active, democratic citizenship in emerging democracies around the world. I'm an avid outdoor person, volleyball player, swimmer, hiker, yoga practitioner and am interested in sustainable living. I look forward to lively discussions and to meeting you. I speak fluent German and welcome the opportunity to practice my Spanish!

The Neighborhood

Topa Topa is quiet neighborhood with lots of folks waking dogs and kids playing

Getting around

There is a trolley that stops on block away every couple of hours until 7 pm. You can walk downtown in 20 or ride a bike in 5 minutes to restaurants and shops.

  • Suzanne is a wonderful host. I had an amazing time at her place which is spacious with a beautiful sun deck and backyard. Her garden in the front is heart opening and a delight to look at from the kitchen window or from the cozy bench in front of the house.
Suzanne is very accommodating, easy going and generous. The guest room is very comfortable with two windows and the bed a delight. Loved the nature consciousness of the host, environmental awareness and growing her own food.
I experienced Suzanne as engaging, open to meaningful conversation and respectful of my privacy and space at the same time.
Thank you so much for a wonderful stay! I'll definitely be back if I can! :o)

  • I loved quiet of the street; that the front yard was filled with veggies, flowers and trees. The house felt open and inviting. Suzanne and her mom were very welcoming, interested and interesting. A comfortable, relaxing and airy home only 20-minutes walk from the downtown Ojai.

  • Suzanne is very welcoming and the space is very nice. It's a room at the end of a hallway and the private guest bathroom is jus to the right of the bedroom doorway.

  • Suzanne was a great host. She was very accommodating when a last minute travel issue came up for me. She is a long-time resident of the area, and was able to give me some helpful suggestions for my trip. I'm very grateful for my stay there.

  • Great stay with Suzanne and Savanna - Suzanne is a wonderful mom. The room was comfy and clean... we left our dog Lily one evening and Suzanne and Savanna looked in on her to make sure she was alright...

  • I was staying with Susan for 2 nights. She has a beautiful home with a very comfortable bed. When I fell asleep, I didn't move all night, just slept. I knew she had a child, but the baby woke up at 5:30 am the first night. Luckily she slept til 6:30 the second night. I didn't arrive each night until 10pm, and I left by 7:00 so not a lot of interaction. It was a little cold at night, but an extra blanket fixed that. The bathroom and shower are fantastic. Susan and her daughter are very sweet and lovely.

  • I loved staying with Suzanne. Her home is beautiful and very relaxing, with a gorgeous back yard, a very comfortable bed, private bathroom, clean and inviting, and most of all, she gave me such a warm welcome into her home. I felt completely at ease to come and go on my own schedule at the same time that I felt welcome and at home, and that is a rare mix! Her house is a very pleasant 15-20 min walk or 5-10 min bike ride to downtown Ojai - you can rent a bike for $50/week at Bicycles of Ojai by the way - great service there too. I loved the whole trip and would stay with Suzanne again any time.

I'm outgoing and interested in life. Professionally, I research young people's political attitudes and skills (PhD in Political Science) and like discussing current affairs, political psychology and life's big questions. I've seen quite a bit of the world, and choose to live in Ojai (plus British Columbia and Mexico for a month or two a year). I turned my yard into an organic farm! Orange, apricot, plum, tangerine, fig- lots of fruit trees! I'm into a sustainable lifestyle. I like yoga, fresh local food, gardening, playing with my daughter Savanna. I like to swim and to hike, play beach volleyball, and to ride my bike. Current heroes: Gandhi, E.O Wilson, LBJ, those who made the Arab Spring happen, environmentalists and my friends.
