I had the pleasure to do a summer internship at LBNL and spent three months in LaWanda`s beautiful, fully equipped (WiFi, Washing machine/dryer, TV, Bed, Shower, Sink, Fridge, Oven, enough room for clothes) and quiet studio. The studio is very well located to the campus, which was very important for me as I had no car. You can reach the UC Berkeley North Gate in 25 minutes by either walking downhill or taking the bus number 65 which stops almost infront of the door. The same bus will also bring you to the Berkeley downtown (BART to SF, many restaurants, Trader Joe's shopping) and back. Finally, you will get a gorgeous view on the golden gate bridge during a sunny Berkeley day and enjoy a lot of nature. The Tilden regional park is just a few streets away. Even if you dont manage to visit the Tilden park, with some luck you might see some small dears crossing the street (impressive!).
Enough about the studio and its great location, now a few words about the owner. Short version: LaWanda is a wonderful person. Long version: I was impressed by the warm atmosphere which I have experienced in LaWandas house right from the very first day of my stay. LaWanda is not only a wonderful person but also a very talented artist (musician, painter, sculptor) whose results can be seen almost everywhere in the house which is nicely decorated with own paintings and sculptures. Yes, even the stylish tee cup which I was drinking from every day was built by LaWanda (not mentioning the self-made sink). LaWanda is a friend of many artists in the area and organises a music event once a month where you can meet many interesting people and enjoy all kinds of music (e.g. jazz, country) with a glass of wine. I was happy to be invited to this events and enjoyed them very much.
Thank you LaWanda for making my stay in Berkeley a pleasure. I will be very happy to stay at your place next time I am visiting the beautiful Berkeley area.
