The Space

I'm now a licensed innkeeper in Austin Tx. My rates include all local hotel taxes.

The Bouldin neighborhood is one of Austin's hippest areas with plenty of fun things to do and places to eat, drink and be merry. All of the pictures of the Bouldin Neighborhood on Airbnb's site, are within 4 blocks of my house. It's a great walking/biking neighborhood. I I like to say you're within 3 miles of most anything you would probably want to do here.
I’m a working artist and avid live music fan. My house has hosted weddings, house concerts, commercial film shoots, music videos, graduations, wrap parties, fundraisers, “after-the-gig” salons and the infamous “1st Sunday Potluck” every month for 10 years. If walls could talk they’d tell you to come on in pull up a chair and have a good time. This property has been most often described as the real Austin deal.

This is a 2 bedroom 1 bath house on 1/3 of an acre, 1.5 miles from downtown. My decorating style is eclectic and artsy. Or as my grandmother calls it, “Early Garage Sale”!
The room has 1 twin and 1 double bed. So 3 people can fit in the room.

Most important to SXSW attendees is the house is super close to the center of SXSW action. It takes 10 minutes to get to the convention center by bike. Coming home is uphill, so it's more like 15. I’m 2 blocks from S. Lamar- lots of venues and restaurants. 4 blocks from South 1st-lots of trendy food trailers and restaurants. And 8 blocks to South Congress. That’s right, THE world famous South Congress. A stones throw from my property is Thai Fresh and Thrice coffee house and venue. 3 blks away is Bouldin Creek Café and Polvo’s Mexican restaurant. Zilker Park- 2 mi., The Long Center-1 mi., Convention Center- 2 mi, Capitol 3 mi.

Other stuff:
-this room now has a double bed with a single added upon request.
- I'm right on the official City of Austin bike bath. It's extensive.
- #5 Bus is right next to my house
- It's good for events but there is an extra charge
- Kitty- corner from Twin Oaks Library
- Corner store is behind my house but HEB is .75 mi and Whole Foods is 1.5 mi.
-Yo hablo Espanol!
-The house is about 10-15 minutes from tihe airport and is a cheap taxi ride.

My art studio is on the property as well as a 600 sq. ft apartment. Plenty of privacy between both. It's also on Airbnb. The apt sleeps 3. And then there’s “The Porch”. I’m proud to say it’s inspired songs and paintings. No really. Someone showed up one time with a painting of my porch as a hostess present. It’s a wrap-around that’s 14' wide on the North side.

Security deposit is $200 for short stays. For stays longer than 2 weeks the deposit is $500. This will be returned by Airbnb a couple of days after check out. 1 pet is allowed. A cleaning fee of $60 will be added for stays longer than 6 nights. There's a fee 0f $20 for your pet.

I do have two dogs that will be on the property.

I'm an Austin native and a wealth of resources and information. Knowing a local is like gold when you’re traveling so ask anything. All in all, we're pretty accommodating. I want to show you why Austin is the best place in the world to have fun and see great music.

  • Thank you, Gretchen, for opening up your home to Mark, Katee, and me. We had a wonderful stay! Gretchen made us feel so welcomed and comfortable. Her yard is amazing! Not only is the landscaping enjoyable to check out, but the wrap around porch provides a peaceful setting to enjoy a southern breeze anytime during the day or night. Gretchen's artistic flare adds a special touch to her home's décor both inside and out. Gretchen is warm and welcoming -- you won't be disappointed hanging out with her and her sweet pups for a while. And if you hear an interesting sound in the distance....it is the peacocks that live just down the street. Not only is Gretchen's property amazing but so is the whole neighborhood. You can safely go for a stroll along the neighborhood streets and it is an easy walk to many restaurants off S. 1st Street. We actually never wanted to leave. Thank you Gretchen!! We hope to be back sometime soon! Liz, Mark, & Katee

  • I had a wonderful stay. Gretchen is very welcoming and the house is just like I had imagined (her first words were "mi casa es su casa" :) ). The location is very convenient. Route #5 takes you directly to downtown and UT, while you get to enjoy a quiet and eclectic neighborhood with lots of cafes and restaurants (a Thai restaurant and bakery is literally one block away). The porch is just marvelous, I spent there quite some time working! I would definitely recommend it to my friends.

  • Gretchen's house was just (email hidden) for me to stay while in Austin. It is conveniently located within walking distance to South Congress, First, and Lamarr streets, and there is access to bus routes easily as well (I got from and to the airport in under an hour for $2.50 each way). Gretchen's house is open, airy, neat and clean, I would rent just the porch if I could. She (email hidden), nice to interact with and never intrusive. And then Betty and Repo were just icing on the cake. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

  • I had a wonderful stay at Gretchen's house. The house is close to shopping, restaurants and music. Gretchen (email hidden) and the house is full of finds that all have their own story. The house is clean and her dogs are friendly. The porch was fantastic for reading and relaxing. So glad I found this place rather than staying in a stuffy hotel.

  • Gretchen was a delightful and accommodating host. Her house is awesome and if you love dogs, you will definitely fall in love with her pups! In addition, the location is super convenient and close to great restaurants, bars and downtown.

  • I had a very enjoyable long weekend stay at Gretchen's home. She was very accommodating in many ways. I even was able to check in at 11 pm which allowed me to catch a show (website hidden) is exactly as described and her other housemates (the dogs) knew how to be good hosts as well. I'd recommend her place easily for a couple, a couple of friends or someone on his or her own like I was. I can easily say I will check with her first when I return. Also it was an easy walk to South Congress, South First and South Lamar. This is coming from a non-walker. I even found it fine to walk downtown, but it is best to find a spot to stop in along the way. This is easy to do in Austin.

  • Gretchen's house is great, very cool and in a great spot. Gretchen was fun to talk with and has 2 great dogs. I would have loved to have spent more time with her.

  • Gretchen was a very gracious host who accommodated me very last minute and my two friends who showed up unannounced. The house was very comfortable and in a great neighborhood.

  • Gretchen is an awesome hostess! I had great time getting to know her, talking about art with her and learning about the way of living in Austin. Gretchen's vibrant artistic home is uplifting, just like the guest bedroom where I stayed at. I wish I had had more time to enjoy the porch - it is a haven for painting, drawing, reading and meditation. Thank you Gretchen and all the best to Betty - the star of the purple armchair!

  • I loved Gretchen, her house, and her warm, friendly hospitality! The house, porch, and grounds were exactly what I was looking for: Austin designer eclectic-chic! The porch and back yard are to die for. I woke up and did yoga on the porch overlooking the big backyard in the morning and sat out there late at night when I returned home. Loved Bouldin Creek and walked to nearby (2-3 blocks, maybe?) Bouldin Creek Cafe almost every morning. Amazing coffee and breakfast with locally sourced ingredients . . . don't miss it! Gretchen is awesome and hilarious and kept me in stitches with her stories; she is also a font of useful and interesting knowledge about Austin. I would definitely stay with her again and definitely recommend staying with her!

I'm an "old school Austin" native. I'm a natural raconteur and love nothing more than meeting people from other cultures. I love all creatures with 4 legs but especially canines. I'm an artist and all the cliches that apply. Live music and politics are my passion.
