If you're visiting London alone for adventures, work, study or to hook up with friends, this cosy little single room is all you need. It's in a really central flat, in a friendly, scruffy Edwardian red brick apartment block in the Barbican area of the City of London. Right in the middle of the newly trendy area of St Luke's/Whitecross St, near Clerkenwell and Shoreditch and within easy reach of the West End and the river, it's ideal for exploring London.
With wood floors throughout, my flat is simply, comfortably and a bit quirkily furnished. There are five smallish rooms, - double bedroom, single bedroom, kitchen, sitting room, bathroom with shower - and a long hallway. Windows are double-glazed and there's gas central heating, WiFi (i.e: wireless broadband), TV, DVD etc. The single bed is new and has a new mattress too.
It's not in these pics, but there's now a desk in the single room for work/study/laptop too.
My neighbours are great and there's no noise from above, as I'm on the fifth (top) floor. So there's plenty of light but there's no lift, so you need to be OK with stairs!
The area's friendly and local - a little residential pocket within the city. Supermarket and daily street market just 30yds away, the Barbican Arts Centre 3 mins walk, (including cinema, theatre, concert hall, art gallery, cafes etc.), Bunhill Fields, cafes, restaurants, shops etc. all around.
It's also amazingly convenient for getting around - you're twenty minutes' walk to Brick Lane, Spitalfields, Smithfields and Columbia Rd Markets, plus the Museum of London, the Thames, St Paul's, the Tate Gallery and more.
Public Transport is very easy - Barbican, Moorgate and Old St tubes are all within 5 minutes' walk, taking you in different directions. Liverpool St and Farringdon rail stations are nearby, plus lots of buses and even bike hire.
At the moment I'm only listing my single room, but contact me if you're interested in renting the whole apartment (i.e: double room and one/two singles) for a limited period - e.g: shopping trips, half term break, Xmas, summer holiday etc - as I'm sometimes away working.
Tessa (email hidden). Her apartment was a great choice while I got on my feet in London: it was so centrally located, grocery store across the street, a friendly local pub on the corner, and a great street market during the week. Tessa is an excellent tour guide as she will give you both the scenic or the most direct route to get somewhere. I felt comfortable enough in Tessa's home to have a night in watching tv, or just having a chat with her when she was around. Her warm, friendly and welcoming nature made for a great stay.
Tessa is a very friendly host, she can give you lots of tips if you want to go out or if you need to find something. The flat is located about 25min by Tube from the very central London like leicester, or it's a 45min walk if you miss the last Tube. The area is very good, with a supermarket right opposite the flat, some Pub, Hairdresser, Restaurant are in the street. From Monday to Friday there is (email hidden)" where you can eat food from everywhere! Very good experience!!
Tess was very kind, helpful, and good natured. Her write up is spot on, there should be no surprises. I will return when travel permits.
I really enjoyed my stay at Tess' cozy apartment in central London! The apartment is just the same as you can see on the photos - it felt like a second home away from home! I stayed for a couple of weeks and Tess is just amazing - she is a very friendly, kind and cooperative person that helps you when you have any questions. I loved my time at her flat and already miss the chats with Tess and the comfortable mattress - I really recommend going there and would love to come back!!!
I really enjoyed my ten day stay at Tessa's place. Tessa (email hidden) - very easy to talk to and does a great job of making you feel at home in the bustling metropolis of London. She is a very keen observer of people, history, popular culture, etc. and has a great sense of humor about all of those things. The apartment is tucked away on a quiet side street in the Barbican - very close to a Waitrose, some good kebab/doner places and a 15-20 minute walk from Brick Lane/Spitalfields markets. It's a charming flat and the room was smartly appointed, so I had plenty of space for all of my things. I quickly settled into a sunset ritual of biscuits and tea while watching Antiques Roadshow on BBC One, which I found to be an acceptable way to mourn the premature loss of sunlight at 4:15pm. For the more adventurous, there are a number of nice pubs nearby to get a pint. I highly recommend Tessa's spot as a home base in London!
My second stay with Tess was as lovely as the first one.
Thank you so much Tess for opening your place for this possibility!
I enjoyed it even more, since it was like visiting an old friend and everything in the apartment was already familiar and had the same great quality as before, plus the discovery of the "apparatus" for indulging in morning lattes.
Tess has a true talent for hosting, but also a great personality for it. She is a very happy person and it is a pleasure to have someone like her for a host, whose smile lights up the room when you come back to your "home" in London. She also surprised me with a book from her library that I could not resist reading, even though all of London was waiting to be discovered! I am full of gratitude for meeting her,
I really recommend this place! Tessa is amazing, helped me everytime I've needed. When I come back to London I'd like to stay in her house again. Thank you Tessa!
I stayed at Tessa's for a few weeks. Although the room is not big, it was for me the perfect place to stay: central, quiet, non smoking and clean. Tessa is great, she will ALWAYS find a solution to your problem, or an answer to your question. Cherry on the cake: she is a very interesting person. To make it short, I just loved her and her place. :-*.
So you please go to her place, ok, but do leave it free for when I'll have to go back ;-). All the best and enjoy your stay!
Tess is a wonderful woman! I loved staying in her lovely flat. And you will too! Room: comfortable bed, perfect room for 1 person, artistic and fun. Pillows are sooooo good! Flat: 5th floor walk up (good cardio) in a great location! Well thought out flat. Ability to do laundry was a major bonus! This artistic residence made me feel very relaxed and inspired creativity! Area: Close to tube and bus routes. Weekday lunch market a block away was excellent! Quiet area of London on the weekends which allows you to really (website hidden): Tess is a doll! Helpful, personable, kind. I hope to stay here again!
Tess' accommodation was perfect. The location is unbeatable and the room was clean and comfortable. I would recommend Tess to anyone looking to stay in London, but especially to writers and academics who (email hidden) to unwind and collect themselves.
