If you are looking for a smaller place, it is also possible to rent the top floor of the house (including living & dining room, kitchen, 1 bedroom, loft with 2 beds, bathroom, and 2 terraces) or to rent the top two floors of the house (the middle floor has 3 additional bedrooms and 2 bathrooms). Don't hesitate to contact me for more details.

The Neighborhood

Villa Ninon is located at the edge of the picturesque village of Karavas, near the northern tip of Kythira, Greece's best-kept secret. Unspoiled beaches of every variety -- white sand and pebble; lively and deserted -- are a short drive away. From the house, you can hike or jog along quiet country roads lined with olive groves and wild thyme bushes to the beaches of Fourni (4 km from the house), Platia Ammos (3.5 km), and Agios Nicolas (6 km). Or you can stroll down to the magical trails of Karavas Valley, alive with dragonflies, orchids and waterfalls, then relax in the shade with an iced coffee at Amir Ali Cafe, listening to the brook babble and the cicadas sing.

Getting around

Because Kythira is a relatively large island, you'll need to rent a car -- or drive down through the Peloponnesus and take the ferry across the strait from Neapoli to Kythira. Feel free to write me for more information about how to get to and get around the island.

Other Things to Note

Kythira is beautiful not only in the summertime, but year-round. Come in the autumn, when the light is spectacular, the beaches are empty, and the sea is still warm. Join in the olive picking, go for long walks in the hills, or just doze on a hammock with the gentle sun on your face. Or come in the spring, when the island is green and lush and blanketed with wildflowers of every color imaginable, when streams and waterfalls are gushing, and people are feeling festive for apokria (Carnival) and Easter celebrations. The sea is swimmable year-round (though quite brisk from December until May), and the weather is mild -- sometimes rainy, sometimes sunny, never very cold.

Get in touch with me if you're interested. I can offer deep discounts for off-season visits, especially long-term stays.

  • We had an amazing week in Kythera, which will stay with us for a long time. We visited in the last week of May. We had beautiful days, beaches, nature, calm, stars, smells, history, pre-history, - and it seemed to be all there just for us, so few fellow travelers in sight.

The host introduced us to locals who enriched our stay by providing stories, background and friendly advice. The house itself is very well appointed, in a great location, great views, good for walks and excursions, very well looked after, well worth a little premium. The friendliness of islanders always a pleasure, great food, the cooked greens were our favorite, the dark blue dragonflies amazing, the dry stone walls and terracing spoke of times when Kythera was a mighty and busy place indeed.

The host pro-actively helped us to work around some issues related to ferry-failure and was genuinely helpful with information, support and local contacts. We planted a little bit of Basil planted in one of the planters. Very much recommended !

  • We spent 4 beautiful weeks in Kythira at Omar's place and we enjoyed everything: the house, the small Karavas village where it is located, the beautiful beaches, very hospitable people and amazing food!
Omar has been a very gracious host as he did everything to make our stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. He provided us with very helpful tips about things to do, places to see and restaurants (we tried every single restaurant he suggested and we were never disappointed!). When we had a problem with the water pump at 8pm at night he did everything he could and solved the issue by arranging somebody to fix it the same night (not easy in a small greek island). He even borrowed (and fully installed and prepared) a crib from a friend of his to be used by our 10 months old son. Thanks Omar!
The house is a traditional Kythirian house which has been beautifully renovated to keep its charm while offering a lot of comfort. It has a very ample kitchen/ dining room and bedrooms. It is decorated in a very delicate and tasteful manner. It was even better than what we expected by looking at the photographs. Despite the fact that there are stairs between the 3 floors, the house is well designed for hosting families with kids/babies: wooden floors, beach toys, a little inflatable pool and a small beach tent.
Last, Kythira is in my view an undiscovered treasure

Hello! I am a law professor and former diplomat. I teach in northern California, but spend as much time as I can around the Mediterranean -- in Palestine, Syria, and France, my countries of origin, and in Greece and Egypt, my adoptive homes. I love messy, cosmopolitan cities, open unspoiled countryside, and the sea, in all its forms and faces.
