Stay a long weekend or a full week in our charming 1890's former captain's home in the historic riverfront whaling village of Athens NY, directly across the river from the town of Hudson.
Have a lovely drive up the beautiful Taconic Parkway (~2 hrs) or else take Amtrak from Penn Station up the beautiful riverfront line straight to Hudson. This historic home has been lovingly rehabbed from top to bottom with all new electric and plumbing, though every attention has been paid to honoring its antique detailing while bringing it into the modern age -- you will find a comfortable mix of modern items & amenities commingled with rustic treasures.
The house sleeps 4 people upstairs in two private bedrooms and 2 more in the living room with a convertible sleeper sofa. There are 2 full baths upstairs -- one is decidedly modern with a state of the art glass shower, while the other hearkens to the house's glory days and features a clawfoot tub with original brass fixtures.
Downstairs offers a full cook's kitchen, dining area and living room centered around a Danish Morso wood burning stove -- plus a cozy front porch for your morning coffee and a decked outdoor dining area in the rear, with barbecue. We have the luxury of being situated on a double lot, so we have a large private/fenced garden and we also grow our own herbs and vegetables on our quarter acre. Another perk is our in-ground stone firepit, which creates yet another warm seating area.
Walking distance to Athens' restaurants and the award-winning riverfront park, and a short drive to the town of Hudson which features great shops and antiques stores, never mind fabulous restaurants and a famous music scene (as illustrated by Rolling Stone magazine just last year!). Skiing, hiking, fishing, and secret swimming-holes are also close by. You are a stone's throw from both culture and outdoor activities. Short transit to both the Berkshires and the Catskills.
Other nearby attractions include Olana state historic site, the Thomas Cole house, the Hudson-Chatham Winery, Old Chatham Sheepherding Co., Bard College, FASNY Firefighting museum, Clermont State Park and Spruce Ridge Alpaca Farm. During the season, pick your own apples at Love Apple Orchard; strawberries, raspberries or blueberries at Thompson Finch Farm; or choose from a large selection of local produce Black Horse Farm. Biodynamic produce is available at Hawthorne Valley Farm.
Privacy, comfort & adventures await!
I rented Sam's home for a relaxing weekend getaway with my best girlfriends in late Feb 2014, and we had such a lovely time in Athens/Hudson. The house was charming, cozy, rustic yet comforting—it looked just as pictured! We had a bit of issue with the hot water but I was able to reach Sam in timely manner; he was apologetic and sent over someone that evening to try and fix the problem. The house is conveniently located about 15 minutes from Hudson, NY where all of the shops/restaurants/cafes are. I would definitely rent the place again.
Very cute house. Just as it looked in pictures. Little further from Hudson than I would have liked (about 15 minutes) and had some trouble with getting hot showers in the morning. Also there is no television. That said great place to get away for a weekend!
Thank you, Sam! we had a beautiful relaxing time! we definitely come back. best, tobias
I stayed at Sam's house with my boyfriend, his mother, and our two dogs. The house is absolutely beautiful. We made a lot of nice meals in the kitchen. Our dogs played for hours in the fenced in yard. The house is a quick drive from Hudson. The brewery down the street was very convenient for beer (the house comes with growlers) and wings. Sam was very responsive via text when we had a few slight issues.
Sam's place was great! We would definitely stay again.
Sam's house in Athens was an absolute pleasure to stay in. We wanted for nothing; enjoyed the fireplace, well-stocked kitchen, and modern bathrooms. Despite subzero temperatures outside we remained warm and cozy inside, huddled by the fire playing Trivial Pursuit. The brewery/restaurant nearby was only a block away, and all four of us (two couples) enjoyed a warm and comfortable New Year's holiday full of warmth, wine, and laughter. Sam's home was a real bargain and an absolute delight, highly recommended.
We had a lovely stay at this charming townhouse. It was perfectly situated in a sweet little town, and just a hop, skip + jump away from awesome Hudson. If you're looking to curl up by the fire with some friends and enjoy a beautifully designed, clean home-- this is it! Would love to return in the Summer and enjoy the back yard + fire pit. Thanks Sam!
Super clean, super stylish, super cozy. A fantastic place to stay.
Had a lovely stay over the Thanksgiving holiday. Was so nice to have access to a full kitchen and comfortable living room with a great little fireplace. Loved the bathrooms. The house was just as pictured. Not much going on in Athens itself, but with the house being such a quick drive to Hudson, it is in a great location. Would definitely come back when the weather is warmer and we could enjoy the firepit and go kayaking on the river.
The house was beautiful, just as pictured. Perfect for a weekend getaway with friends. Lots of cooking took place in the lovely, well-equipped kitchen.
Hudson was perfect for shopping, and Athens has a great little bar/brewery down the street with a friendly woman behind the counter, and, all agreed, respectable wings.
The instructions were all clear, which made arriving and departing simple. All around a lovely experience.
