Oh we REALLY enjoyed our time at Sugar Shack 3!!! What's not to like? Your up in the mountains, you have mac nut trees off the patio, fresh fruit trees to pick from, wonderful Kona coffee, local restaurants and fruit stands up and down the highway. What we wanted was to get away and it was the perfect get-away.
Already planning a trip back next year!
Kelly's Sugar Shack was the most charming place I've stayed on the Big Island. Very convenient to all the attractions on the Kona side of the Island. It was very private with the sounds of the birds and frogs to enhance the feeling of being surrounded by nature. The cabin was beautifully finished and decorated and I especially loved the outdoor eating lanai. The queen bed was extremely comfortable and perfect for great sleeping. All the equipment for the beach was provided including fluffy beach towels, snorkeling gear, chairs, and coolers. What else could you ask for in Hawaii?
this wonderful little house does really not deserve being called just a "shack"! it is a completely modernized accommodation, very clean, very cosy and beautifully and tastefully furnished. all household ware is of high quality and no cheapo stuff. big flatscreen in the living room and a beautiful bathroom. there is even a dishwasher! we also loved the dining porch and sitting outside in front of the house. delicious papayas, mac nuts and avocados are just nearby in the garden. and once you tried kelly and kim's self-grown coffee, you will never want to drink any other coffee anymore!
conveniently located just next to the highway (not noisy at all!), all sights, snorkel spots and nearby places can be reached fast and easily. kona is just 25 mins away. kelly and kim have been wonderful hosts and very responsive in person or via email with everything we needed.
don't waste your time looking for any other place - go for the shack and you will definitely enjoy your stay in this wonderful little paradise!
The sugar shack is a good choice if you're looking for a neighborhood island experience far removed from downtown Kona & big resorts. Captain Cook is a beautiful area. Kelly is very responsive to your emails and phone calls and will get right back to you.
It was such a pleasure to stay at the Sugar Shack 3! Kelly and Kim were amazing hosts; super friendly, helpful and very responsive to any needs. The "shack" was clean and the perfect size. It sits on a working coffee and mac nut farm, and tons of fruit trees as well. We got to sample all of it, and it was incredible!
We loved the South Kona location - amazing for snorkeling, hiking, and sunning. We would definitely stay here again. A week in paradise!
We are artists and were looking for a unique place to stay on the Big Island. Well we found it at the Sugar Shack 3, it was exactly the kind of place we'd hoped to find. Like a Geode, which doesn't look like much at first glance, is actually a beautiful gem. We had a wonderful holiday, driving to local beaches and various other parts of the Island as well as hanging out with "Ping and Pong" the resident cats! We very much hope to return one day!
For the price, Sugar Shack #3 was a great deal, maybe the best on the island. My wife and I loved staying here, and our hosts were very professional and friendly. The location was perfect for us too (we did not want to be too close to Kona). The sugar shack had everything we needed and more: blender, microwave, guidebooks, tv, washer/dryer, snorkel gear, boogie boards, beach towels and loads of fresh fruit, veggies and mac nuts growing on site. We would come back in a heartbeat.
The "shack" is awesome - great full kitchen with clean, solid appliances; awesome bathroom with good water pressure and temp, comfy bed, etc. Perfect place to come back to after a full day of getting dirty, sweaty, and salty exploring the island. The washer and dryer enabled us to pack lightly, which was nice as well.
Kelly was very responsive and helpful. If (WHEN!) we come back to the Big Island, we'll be sure to look this place up again.
Ignore the fact that it has "shack" in the name. It is a very well kept guest house, with gorgeous floors, and a great layout. You'll sit on the porch and enjoy breakfast, sit around the firepit at night, or just spend some cuddle time indoors in the cool evenings. I hooked my laptop (HDMI) to the big TV and we watched Netflix after a day at the beach. The farm setting is swarming with Macadamia Nut trees, fresh fruit of all kinds, and the most gorgeous flowers you will ever see.
It was so close to the City of Refuge I spent just about every morning there. Easily the best snorkel spot on the big island. Just a few miles north is Kona if you need anything, but an easy walk up the driveway takes you to a local grocery story with lots of supplies AND a local food joint call Guy's Grinds which is delicious and affordable.
Our hosts were helpful, communicative, and very willing to share info with us about attractions and beaches.
My vacation was perfect. Thanks KELLY & KIM!
No amount of pictures can do this place justice! The property is absolutely beautiful and is in such a convenient location right off the highway! Kelly and Kim were extremely responsive and were always available when we had issues or questions about local spots. The Shacks themselves are beautiful and are very well appointed, and during one of our talks with Kim we found that they are made almost entirely from salvaged wood - which is amazing because they are absolutely stunning! The Lanai was our favorite thing about this shack, and we spent many mornings and evening just relaxing in the chairs and listening and looking out at the stunning surroundings. Sometimes we'd even get some company, as the two cats on the property, Ping and Pong were VERY friendly! The dog greeted us almost every morning, and was suuuuch a sweetheart. Farmer Adam and the other workers on the property were so friendly and brought us fresh fruit from around the grounds.
We had booked our rental car through them, but unfortunately it had been in an accident the week prior to our visit. They let us know with plenty of time in advance so that we were able to secure another rental car, and promptly refunded our deposit.
We haven't stopped talking about this place since we got back, and have recommended it to all of our friends who are interested in going to the Big Island.
As a side note, Kim gave us the recommendation to go to Patz Pies... DEFINITELY GO! I don't think we've stopped thinking about those salads and pizza since we got back to the mainland.
Haha, so great! Thank-you both! I am laughing because we live too far to get to Patz Pies once a week! (and I do think about that pizza/salad combo a lot)! The delicious homemade vegie pesto and homegrown salads from Kea'ola Farms!~AHHHH! We heard there is a new property owner which will certainly get the ball rolling for upgrades. I'm down for that bathroom remodel. Hope to see you next year! Thanks for passing us along to friends and family! We will let Adam and friends know your appreciation! OX
