This place is amazing in so many ways! My husband and I wanted to try out Airbnb and were looking for the kind of accommodations that allowed us to get away from the city back home and just breathe. We definitely found our relief at the "Sugar Shack 3". From the moment we pulled up we just felt we had found the right place. Their very sweet kitty, "Pong" greeted us upon arrival and every morning for our entire stay. The interior is tastefully decorated, the bed was very comfortable, the kitchen well stocked and it was nice to be able to do a load of laundry when needed allowing us to pack light. Based on previous reviews we thought the coqui frogs would maybe keep us up at night so I brought earplugs. Didn't end up needing them. We actually enjoyed their chirping in the evenings and didn't find falling asleep difficult even with the windows open. That said, earplugs may be necessary if you're a light sleeper. Both Kelly and Kim were such gracious hosts. Good people who are willing to do what it takes to make your stay enjoyable. We loved listening to their stories on how they ended up in Hawaii and left feeling inspired to move to Hawaii ourselves! You never know! In any case, the Sugar Shack 3 is a real gem and we wouldn't hesitate to stay there again on a future visit! Mahalo K&K!! (say aloha to Pong for me;)
The Sugar Shack was the perfect fit for us on our mother/daughter trip! The space is PERFECT for two people. We had breakfast outside each morning, which was wonderful. This would be an excellent option for longer term stays, as there is a nicely stocked kitchen. The floors and ceiling are stunning (Kim is a woodworker, so he gets some great finds!) and the entire cottage is decorated in a warm and inviting way. Kelly & Kim were awesome hosts and helped whenever we needed something. Kim even popped over to share some jerky and a beer with us! If only we could have stayed longer! You will not be disappointed!
The sugar shack was fantastic, great location and great setting! Kelly and Kim were extremely generous and helpful hosts and we felt so welcome. The house and their farm were charming, surrounded by tropical trees and full of life. Geckos and mongoose, tree frogs and birds trilling at night, the sweetest little cat wandering the grounds and their lovely dogs when they are on property.
The location was great, removed from the main tourist hub and very close to some of the best snorkeling at Two Step and Captain Cook and a good variety of both fine dining and inexpensive local eateries. For cooking at home the kitchen was well stocked with implements plus a grill and full grocery only 2 miles away. The bed was comfortable, the hardwood floors were beautiful, the shower is lovely. Clean and spacious accommodations for 2.
If you are looking for somewhere less touristy and full of character and charm I can't recommend it enough. There is another similar rental on the property and the people we met were repeat visitors, as we will be next time we are on the big island!
Our little family had a great time at the sugar shack. You have nice restaurants around, grocery stores are nearby and it is not too far to the beaches (you need a car!). The cottage is well equipped to have home made meals and you can enjoy them on a wonderful terrace surrounded by trees. We dont like big hotels and too touristy sites. That is why this was a perfect, private place for us for a really good price. Kelly and Kim are very gentle and welcoming people and fun to talk to. They even provided us with a wonderful baby bed for our little one and with fresh fruits and vegetables from their farm. Delicious!
Just be prepared to stay at a working farm and only 200 m from Hwy 11. So there is some noise but which wasnt too bothering for us.
We had a wonderful time!
We met Kelly and her daughter upon our arrival and were welcomed like old friends.
The Sugar Shack is very charming , comfortable and very well equipped. Being surrounded by limes, lemons, avocadoes, papayas, coffee and macadamias made for a truly tropical experience.
Kelly was readily available by text to answer any and all of our questions.
The location, just south of Kona, made for easy access to surrounding beaches and other sites.
We would highly recommend staying here.
We arrived late in the evening. Kelly had arranged for a great big basket of fresh fruit for us for the first morning. Wonderful. She came and greeted us the first morning with a great big 'Aloha".
Kelly was great in helping us get orientated and answering any questions we had.
The shack was comfortable, clean and perfect for us. The fresh fruit all around us was wonderful, and it was different being serenaded by the frogs chirping every night.
A great place to stay, nice and cool in the evenings at the higher altitude and not too far from town.

My husband and I are in our mid-50's. We grow our own label 100% Kona coffee August-Jan. We've been building soil over time, and apply the good stuff to our farmland. There is a small wood shop where we use hardwoods and craft custom wood flooring. On occasion, you will see us in the garden when not attending our children and farm animals. Husband+Wife of 26+ yrs, parents of 3 children. We share our love of communication and hospitality, and welcome world travelers. This is the 'Land of Tropical Waters, Plentiful Fruits, Fragrant Flowers, and Funny Animals.' Come and join us!
