  • Oh we REALLY enjoyed our time at Sugar Shack 3!!! What's not to like? Your up in the mountains, you have mac nut trees off the patio, fresh fruit trees to pick from, wonderful Kona coffee, local restaurants and fruit stands up and down the highway. What we wanted was to get away and it was the perfect get-away.
Already planning a trip back next year!

  • Kelly's Sugar Shack was the most charming place I've stayed on the Big Island. Very convenient to all the attractions on the Kona side of the Island. It was very private with the sounds of the birds and frogs to enhance the feeling of being surrounded by nature. The cabin was beautifully finished and decorated and I especially loved the outdoor eating lanai. The queen bed was extremely comfortable and perfect for great sleeping. All the equipment for the beach was provided including fluffy beach towels, snorkeling gear, chairs, and coolers. What else could you ask for in Hawaii?

Thank-you Colleen for noticing all the wonder of our spot. We really appreciate your attention to the details. Look forward to seeing you on a future visit to our islands. Aloha, KK

  • this wonderful little house does really not deserve being called just a "shack"! it is a completely modernized accommodation, very clean, very cosy and beautifully and tastefully furnished. all household ware is of high quality and no cheapo stuff. big flatscreen in the living room and a beautiful bathroom. there is even a dishwasher! we also loved the dining porch and sitting outside in front of the house. delicious papayas, mac nuts and avocados are just nearby in the garden. and once you tried kelly and kim's self-grown coffee, you will never want to drink any other coffee anymore!

conveniently located just next to the highway (not noisy at all!), all sights, snorkel spots and nearby places can be reached fast and easily. kona is just 25 mins away. kelly and kim have been wonderful hosts and very responsive in person or via email with everything we needed.

don't waste your time looking for any other place - go for the shack and you will definitely enjoy your stay in this wonderful little paradise!

  • We are artists and were looking for a unique place to stay on the Big Island. Well we found it at the Sugar Shack 3, it was exactly the kind of place we'd hoped to find. Like a Geode, which doesn't look like much at first glance, is actually a beautiful gem. We had a wonderful holiday, driving to local beaches and various other parts of the Island as well as hanging out with "Ping and Pong" the resident cats! We very much hope to return one day!

  • Great spot for some rest and relaxation. Really enjoyed our time at the Sugar Shack!

  • We enjoyed the Sugar Shack 3 at South Kona, it was slightly out of the craziness of the resort area yet close enough to easily get to everything. Quiet and relaxed. They were harvesting coffee while we were there and it was interesting to see how it starts from bush to our coffee pot. Adam was care taking the coffee farm and shared lots of information with us. This gave us a taste of the "other" Kona, which is important in our travels.

I can see Davids smiley face, (sorry to mis-quote Peter)... Thanks again!

  • We had a great time, the accomodation was great. I loved the little extra's that was included such as the cooler, beach chairs etc. There was everything that we needed for our stay as we enjoyed cooking our own meals and using fire pit a couple of times. The location is very good in realtion to the beaches and to Kona as it is only a few minutes away.

    Thank-you both! Enjoy the Holidays!

  • Kelly and Kim are lovely people and wonderful hosts with a truly special retreat. Ry was kind enough to take me to the beach and to get the fire pit roaring more than once. My unit was clean, comfortable and spacious, but it is really the people who made this visit special. If you want to get off the hotel circuit, be minutes from Place of Refuge and the Captain Cook trailhead (a killer hike that leads to world class snorkeling), brick your smartphone, get some snorkel gear and unplug at the shack. If you are smart enough to open up your fire pit to your neighbors, you are guaranteed to meet some interesting people. If you are truly lucky, Kelly will lay down some heavy wisdom and Kim will take you on a tour of his shop. Good people in a peaceful and beautiful locale.

  • We had a great time at the Sugar Shack. It was fantastic being nestled amongst the coffee plants and macadamia trees. I was able to pick fresh nuts and avocado and enjoyed the homegrown coffee Kelly provided us. The Sugar Shack is in a great location - driving distance to Kona, the botanical garden, the farmer's markets, and the great beaches and snorkeling sites. We also enjoyed having breakfast at the nearby Coffee Shack. When we left we were very physically and mentally relaxed. I recommend it highly!

More work trade farmers on the way, you're welcome to drop in to see our progress in the next 18 months! Enjoy!

  • Beautiful property with some very detail-oriented, helpful, but unobtrusive hosts running the show. Our stay in sugar shack 3 was beautiful and exactly what we wanted (and needed!). As a base camp for exploring the island, it was ideal. The kona coast is gorgeous and about midway to everything worth seeing on the island. Plus when we finally met Kelly, she was as sweet as a plate of yams with maple syrup! Would definitely stay at the sugar shack again.
