Hello Airbnb travelers!
We have a small, simple, very private studio room for guests to stay in while they are visiting the Monterey Peninsula.
Once you step through the large wooden gate and walk down the brick pathway in our secret garden, you will find a safe, clean and simple haven to call home during your stay. The studio room has a private entrance and a private bath, connected, yet completely closed off and separate from the main house where we live. The redwood room, hardwood floor, high-beam ceiling and botanical colors and fabrics give the studio a calm, cheerful feel. The room can house two people comfortably. The room has a comfortable queen size bed with a memory foam topper and plenty of soft blankets and pillows. The newly tiled bathroom has a shower, heat lamp, a wonderful radiant heat floor and towels. In the room there is a small refrigerator and a coffee maker for your morning coffee- we provide complimentary freshly ground organic beans, a variety of teas, organic half&half and purified water. Also in the room is a small dining table with two chairs, a wing back chair, and an armoire to hang up clothes in. On the bookshelf you will find many books to read on local history, hiking trails, California bird, tree and wildflower field guides and other interesting topics. Wifi, a Bose Wave radio/cd player with a selection of cd's, a small iron and board, a hair dryer, binoculars, and a picnic basket are also provided for your use and enjoyment.
Though the house is situated right by Highway 1 as you enter Carmel, we are surprisingly tucked away and hidden from view- but there is traffic. It quiets way down after rush hours in the morning and evening, even more after 11 p.m., and is usually pretty much quiet all night, although later and louder during holiday weekends and local main events. The occasional siren and motorcycle can be heard, but with the windows closed, it's really not that bad. Though the highway sound may be an issue for some, almost all people so far have found the level to be perfectly acceptable- the new dual-pane windows and door help a lot! The upside to the location is that it offers very fast, easy access to any destination you are headed, be it Carmel-by-the-Sea, Carmel Valley, Point Lobos, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Monterey or Big Sur.
***INCLUDED with the price of the room, we offer several perks to make your stay even more enjoyable:
*Two Monterey Bay Aquarium guest passes (an $80 value)
*A State Park pass which gives you free access into Point Lobos State Park Reserve and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park in Big Sur (a $10 value each)
*Complimentary wine tasting cards at two excellent local wineries (a $20 value).
All are must-see places to go while you are here in Carmel.
We are a 5 minute drive to downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea, and about a 15 minute walk through the backroads of Carmel, all downhill.
There is a two night minimum stay. No pets are allowed in the studio- no exceptions- so people with pet allergies, there is no need to worry.
If you are looking for a sunny, secluded, perfectly quiet place to stay, this may not be the place for you, but if you are looking for a very private, conveniently located, reasonably priced, cozy space with a hot shower, a comfortable bed and basic amenities, then this just may be the perfect spot.
As an Airbnb host, we are committed to being accommodating, helpful, and making your stay in the Secret Garden Room in Carmel as comfortable as possible, and from guest suggestions, we are making improvements all the time. You will have total privacy in the studio, but we are available 24/7 if you have any questions or need anything at all.
+++++PLEASE NOTE+++++If you do decide to inquire about or book the room, please share a little about yourself, who you will be travelling with, and the purpose of your visit in your first message to us. Be respectful of the space in regards to cleanliness, wear and tear on the room, and excessive noise. We are in a drought, so water conservation is a must. No smoking or use of candles on the property. Please call or email the day before your check-in day to give us your estimated time of arrival. If you will be late or early, please call to let us know; punctuality is greatly appreciated.
Jill and Michael are the ultimate hosts. They met us on arrival, gave us a wonderful orientation to the house and the area, and saw to it that we had everything that we needed.
What a lovely little garden cottage! We enjoyed our stay and loved this quiet, conveniently located, private place to stay. Michel and Jill were very friendly accommodating hosts and provided just the right amount of accessibility while respecting privacy. We loved all the info on the area and passes that were available for use. We definitely want to stay here again if in the area again! Thank you!
Michael and Jill were extremely welcoming. They provided very helpful directions to find the Secret Garden room and welcomed us warmly when we arrived. They told us all we needed to know about the room and the area. We had a wonderful stay in Carmel and much of that was due to Michael and Jill's hospitality. If you are staying in the Carmel area, we would highly recommend the Secret Garden room!
Okay, this can get to sound monotonous, but...staying at the Secret Garden was a wonderful experience. The space is intimate, and warmly beautiful. Perfect music CD collection for their Bose, btw. Unexpected pleasure was the silhouetted trees through the picture window's gauzy curtains across from the bed on awakening. The comfort of that bed made it hard to leave it, oof! One of our planned excursions was to the phenomenal Point Lobos, and although the weather was testy (rainy, blowy), the pass made it totally feasible to go back for a second visit, had time allowed. Didn't realize the Aquarium had gotten so expensive over the years since we'd last been; having the pass for that made it worthwhile to spend just our available half hour - this is now a $40/pp savings! (Jellies exhibit!) Excellent nearby restaurant recommendation by aquarium employee: Sea Harvest. They're a seafood market as well (fresh fresh), and wine bottles can be purchased off the shelf (They'll open and pour, great deal!). Not on the water, but it was night, so...so what?! We met Jill and Michael only on arrival, although they checked in by email a couple times during our visit, and they're warmly welcoming hosts, who appear to love what they do with airbnb. We called as we approached later than planned, and appreciated redirection due to fires in Big Sur. Thanks, Jill and Michael. May we meet again in your cottage and gorgeous garden walkway. And thanks for the loan of the hat, umbrellas, and flashlights. **Read arrival directions carefully ahead of time for less stressful arrival.** We were glad we did. Oh, yeah, breakfast at LouLou's Griddle in the Middle (Monterey) good bet - they didn't have take-out menu available to add to Michael and Jill's file. Wish I was at Secret Garden with a cup of tea from your offerings, instead of awaiting the next blizzard here in New England...
My boyfriend and I had a great visit to Michael and Jill's Secret Garden! Their recommendation about Point Lobos was on point! We definitely made use of the Monterey Bay Aquarium passes! The room itself was as described. The traffic never woke us up. We loved the water filtration system. The tap water was tasty. Michael and Jill even let us borrow the State Park pass the day we checked out since they didn't have anyone staying with them that night! Jill also made a great recommendation for Yafa (although they hadn't been there, their previous guests had eaten there) via email when I asked where I should make a dinner reservation on Saturday! They have been nothing, but friendly and helpful from when I made the reservation to when we left. Thank you Michael and Jill!
We had a great time staying at the Secret Cottage this past weekend! Jill and Michael were wonderful hosts making sure we had all that we needed for a great trip. The house is conveniently located near all the major attractions in the area. This was our first airbnb experience. The bar has been set high!
Note: The house is directly on a busy road so if you are sensitive to street noise this needs to be considered. Once in the room, we never heard the traffic, but you do when you're outside.
I highly recommend staying at the Secret Garden when you are in Carmel, CA. We will be back!
We could not have asked for a better first experience in Carmel! Michael and Jill were unbelievably helpful without being intrusive. They had fantastic suggestions that made our trip even better. And of course we can't forget to mention how comfortable the bed is!
We are both life-time Carmel locals. We cherish the local beauty of the hills and coastline that surrounds us and feel very blessed to be here. I am a dog sitter and Michael is a veteran Caddie at Pebble Beach Golf Links. I love gardening, William Morris and Pre-Raphaelite art, animals, shell collecting and vegetarian cooking. Michael loves taking saunas, walking Point Lobos, hiking in the Sierra mountains, learning about local fauna and eating my vegetarian cooking. We are both passionate about water, energy and resource conservation, composting and recycling. We love Airbnb and look forward to opening our humble home to travelers near and far.
