Hello Airbnb travelers!
We have a small, simple, very private studio room for guests to stay in while they are visiting the Monterey Peninsula.
Once you step through the large wooden gate and walk down the brick pathway in our secret garden, you will find a safe, clean and simple haven to call home during your stay. The studio room has a private entrance and a private bath, connected, yet completely closed off and separate from the main house where we live. The redwood room, hardwood floor, high-beam ceiling and botanical colors and fabrics give the studio a calm, cheerful feel. The room can house two people comfortably. The room has a comfortable queen size bed with a memory foam topper and plenty of soft blankets and pillows. The newly tiled bathroom has a shower, heat lamp, a wonderful radiant heat floor and towels. In the room there is a small refrigerator and a coffee maker for your morning coffee- we provide complimentary freshly ground organic beans, a variety of teas, organic half&half and purified water. Also in the room is a small dining table with two chairs, a wing back chair, and an armoire to hang up clothes in. On the bookshelf you will find many books to read on local history, hiking trails, California bird, tree and wildflower field guides and other interesting topics. Wifi, a Bose Wave radio/cd player with a selection of cd's, a small iron and board, a hair dryer, binoculars, and a picnic basket are also provided for your use and enjoyment.
Though the house is situated right by Highway 1 as you enter Carmel, we are surprisingly tucked away and hidden from view- but there is traffic. It quiets way down after rush hours in the morning and evening, even more after 11 p.m., and is usually pretty much quiet all night, although later and louder during holiday weekends and local main events. The occasional siren and motorcycle can be heard, but with the windows closed, it's really not that bad. Though the highway sound may be an issue for some, almost all people so far have found the level to be perfectly acceptable- the new dual-pane windows and door help a lot! The upside to the location is that it offers very fast, easy access to any destination you are headed, be it Carmel-by-the-Sea, Carmel Valley, Point Lobos, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Monterey or Big Sur.
***INCLUDED with the price of the room, we offer several perks to make your stay even more enjoyable:
*Two Monterey Bay Aquarium guest passes (an $80 value)
*A State Park pass which gives you free access into Point Lobos State Park Reserve and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park in Big Sur (a $10 value each)
*Complimentary wine tasting cards at two excellent local wineries (a $20 value).
All are must-see places to go while you are here in Carmel.
We are a 5 minute drive to downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea, and about a 15 minute walk through the backroads of Carmel, all downhill.
There is a two night minimum stay. No pets are allowed in the studio- no exceptions- so people with pet allergies, there is no need to worry.
If you are looking for a sunny, secluded, perfectly quiet place to stay, this may not be the place for you, but if you are looking for a very private, conveniently located, reasonably priced, cozy space with a hot shower, a comfortable bed and basic amenities, then this just may be the perfect spot.
As an Airbnb host, we are committed to being accommodating, helpful, and making your stay in the Secret Garden Room in Carmel as comfortable as possible, and from guest suggestions, we are making improvements all the time. You will have total privacy in the studio, but we are available 24/7 if you have any questions or need anything at all.

Be respectful of the space in regards to cleanliness, wear and tear on the room, and excessive noise. We are in a drought, so water conservation is a must. No smoking or use of candles on the property. Please call or email the day before your check-in day to give us your estimated time of arrival. If you will be late or early, please call to let us know; punctuality is greatly appreciated.
While we have rented properties on an a competitors site. this was our first Airbnb. How delightful. You get a sense of it by imagining yourself going through the wood door into a wonderful garden area. The studio is impeccably decorated with attention to detail with a faint smell of jasmine filtering into the room. If San Francisco ever gets its act together allowing us to rent out our place, Michael and Jill would be our model. It really is a very special unit, no IKEA or hand me downs here. The studio was clearly put together to enhance our enjoyment. After an orientation to the unit there was a laminated card for us to easily refer to, as well as a notebook filled with suggestions for restaurants, walks and the like. There were plenty of books and other literature to peruse on area attractions. But was most helpful was Jill and Michael helping us whittle down all the choices. I so appreciated Jill's suggestion on which activity to do on which day. The pass for California State Parks and the Monterrey Aquarium not only saves money but time spent in lines. In conclusion, their reviews speak for themselves. I am glad that we chose to stay here.
It was like staying at a distant relatives' guest house. Thank you Jill and Michael for your kind and meticulous instruction on everything. Very eco conscience and very homey...in room amenities and flowers and garden were thoroughly appreciated.
Michael and Jill's secret garden was an absolute delight. Do not think twice about booking! It is comfortable, quiet and dreamy. The gardens are so gorgeous- the scent of the jasmine is divine. Cozy bed, great windows, clean and spacious shower! Michael and Jill made everything SO easy and are a delight. Can't wait to someday return.
Michael and Jill have an amazing space to stay in Carmel. We never got to meet Michael, but Jill could not have been more welcoming or helpful. She was waiting upon our arrival and showed us everything about the room and provided us with recommendations for our short stay, which we greatly appreciated. The room is perfect for two, the bed is super comfortable, and it's stocked with organic teas, coffee, and all natural toiletries which was a lovely touch. Jill's garden is beautiful as well and it was such a treat to walk through it each time we left and returned to the house - I will never forget how amazing it smelled! There are plenty of guidebooks about the area in the room and a binder full of restaurant menus around the area which was also extremely helpful. I would stay here again in a heartbeat, thank you Jill & Michael!
Michael & Jill were extremely kind, and made my girlfriend and I feel extremely welcome. The room was fantastic never noticed any kind of traffic noise. The aquarium, wine tasting and hiking passes were a amazing bonus and definitely worth doing. We took their advice on some places to eat, and they were spot on. We both agreed when if we make another trip out we wouldn't like to stay anywhere else. No hotel can give the same experience, it was like being at home. I highly recommend anyone going to Carmel to try and stay here.

Jill and Michael are the ultimate hosts. They met us on arrival, gave us a wonderful orientation to the house and the area, and saw to it that we had everything that we needed.
Michael and Jill were incredible hosts who warmly welcomed us into their breathtaking secret garden and after the welcome they gave is total privacy. The garden is absolutely gorgeous and so peaceful. But the best part of all was the room. It was huge, beautifully decorated, had the most comfortable mattress ever, and had all the amenities necessary to enjoy a perfect vacation. They had tea, coffee, water, a mini fridge, utensils, bowls, plates, glasses, mugs, and so much more. We felt right at home. Also, the room is built with redwood so the wood looks absolutely gorgeous!
Lastly, the pass to Point Lobos state park and the Monterey aquarium were the best perks of all. We went to both locations and had a blast. They were definitely the highlights of our trip.
We are both life-time Carmel locals. We cherish the local beauty of the hills and coastline that surrounds us and feel very blessed to be here. I am a dog sitter and Michael is a veteran Caddie at Pebble Beach Golf Links. I love gardening, William Morris and Pre-Raphaelite art, animals, shell collecting and vegetarian cooking. Michael loves taking saunas, walking Point Lobos, hiking in the Sierra mountains, learning about local fauna and eating my vegetarian cooking. We are both passionate about water, energy and resource conservation, composting and recycling. We love Airbnb and look forward to opening our humble home to travelers near and far.
