About this listing

We open our home to you, sharing our vegetarian kitchen and other living spaces, but the guest rooms are on a separate level with semi-private entrance, so privacy is easy too. Walking distance to all Grass Valley and Empire Mine. We keep the house as fragrance-free as possible. Access to the guest room is by stairs, so please be comfortable climbing and descending stairs. Please have a photo of yourself and a profile when requesting a stay, and let us know why you're visiting.

The space

We have a large home in the small Gold Rush town of Grass Valley in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, between Sacramento and Truckee/Lake Tahoe. Our large guest room is off our large studio space and has its own large bathroom. It has a Keurig machine, tea & coffee, filtered water, microwave. We share our large, well-equipped vegetarian kitchen and our living room. We have two cats (but they are rarely allowed on the floor of the house that has the guest rooms). The home, large front porch, and backyard are attractive and comfortable places to relax. Our porch overlooks the town and is especially gorgeous at sunset. We are cyclists and hikers who know the nearby roads and trails. Our home is in walking distance of downtown Grass Valley and Empire Mine State Park and just up the street from the town's best coffee house and restaurant. This room has a queen-size bed and wireless Internet. We're willing to accommodate larger groups by arrangement, including making other rooms available when asked. Convenient for local festivals (Bluegrass, Celtic, Music in the Mountains, World Music Festival, Center for the Arts, Wild and Scenic Film Festival), wine tasting, Gold Rush history, hiking and biking, the Tour of Nevada City, the College of Ayurveda, Nevada City, Empire Mine State Historic Park, Cornish Christmas, Victorian Christmas, the Yuba River, and the entire northern California Gold Country. We are walking distance to restaurants, art, shopping, clubs, and theater. We are 5 minutes from Nevada City and all its attractions. Our favorite coffee shop is 2 blocks away. The woods for running, hiking, biking are 3 blocks. Though we don't provide breakfast, your room has a Keurig machine with a selection of teas, coffees, condiments, but feel free to use our kitchen too. Please, no perfumes, colognes, or other heavily scented products. And please be prepared to handle a flight of stairs, but no need to carry bags up and down them.

We also have a photo studio that can be make available by arrangement. Guests enter through a semi-private side entrance. Our home has stairs and is not wheelchair accessible.

Our area is varied and interesting, some old and some new. We're walking distance to the town, to the woods, to Empire Mine, and to a great coffee shop/restaurant that includes live music every weekend morning.

Walking and biking are easy. The bus runs down our street with a stop one house away. Plenty of parking on the street. Nevada City is a 5-minute drive.

The guest room is downstairs; it's cool in summer. It's off a large photo studio. Travel between the guest room and the main part of the house requires climbing and descending stairs.

Keurig machine, filtered water, microwave, condiments, snacks at the room. Full vegetarian kitchen and eating area upstairs. Living room with a view. Semi-private entrance.

We love to get to know our guests and learn about them and their homes as well as share and learn more about our area. But we also give our guests a private space and complete control of their experience here.

Our neighborhood is perfect for walking, both around the neighborhood and to nearby locations. We're a few blocks from the best coffee shop, the best Chilean restaurant, and the best gourmet market in the area. We're also blocks away from Empire Mine and the woods for hiking and biking.

Walking is fast and easy to just about anywhere in Grass Valley. Public transit bus runs down our street. We're a minute from the freeway with 5-minute access to Nevada City. Getting here from Sacramento International Airport, check our info page on the web for the best alt route to avoid traffic.

Louise is a massage therapist and craniosacral practitioner as well as an artist. For a tour of her work, just ask. She is typically booked for bodywork a few weeks out. Ed is a photographer and has a fully equipped photo studio right outside the guest room. It can be rented or booked for photo shoots separately.

Guest access

The guest entrance is on the side of the house, leading to a waiting room for Louise's practice. From there, the Studio door leads down rather steep STAIRS to the studio level. The guest room is off our old studio space, now converted to a sitting room for guests. The guests' large, private full bathroom (shower and bath) is there too. Keurig machine, filtered water, microwave, refrigerator, condiments, snacks at the room. Full vegetarian kitchen and eating area upstairs, as well as living room with a view.

Interaction with guests

We love to get to know our guests and learn about them and their homes as well as share and learn more about our area. But we also give our guests a private space and complete control of their experience here.

For a couple or a single, don't waste your time going anywhere else. Besides being awesome hosts, Ed and Louise's place is located within walking distance of restaurants, a supermarket, and the town of Grass Valley. This is an incredible value!

This was my second visit to Grass Valley and I knew that I would choose to stay with Ed and Louise again; they were perfect hosts the first time I visited and even more perfect hosts the second time. Their basement suite is inviting, spacious, and very comfortable, with all the amenities one could ask for and then some. They are gracious and interesting hosts, whose knowledge of the history, culture and natural beauty of the area allowed me to really make the most of my stay. I highly recommend Ed and Louise's beautiful home and warm hospitality.

Unfortunately we were too busy with the wedding we were part of to get to socialize much with Ed and Louise but Ed gave us a very warm welcome to their awesome little basement abode. The bed was super comfortable for us to crash into after two long days of driving and going to the wedding and the shower was great. While those are really the only two things I need, the basement floor was chock full of amenities from coffee to space heaters to robes. They provide unscented shampoo, conditioner, and body wash but make sure to bring your own unscented versions of other things (or of those things if you're like me and are unfortunately allergic to argan oil). Long story short: we had a brief but lovely stay at Ed & Louise's home and only wish we could've gotten to chat with them more!

We bicycle and hike locally, around California, and in Grand Canyon. We both cook. Our kitchen is vegetarian. We share our home (almost) completely.
