A darling, tranquil getaway. 2.5 hours' drive from NYC, peace and quiet. Escape the city's tensions, clear your head, romance your sweetheart, work on your book in our sweet updated cottage. We just upgraded the wifi (summer, 2020).

Beadboard kitchen, tiled bath, fully insulated, heated with forced hot air. Note winter 2021: we have had evidence of mice in the kitchen. See longer note below.

Small pet okay.

The space
Our sweet 1900 cottage tucked into a copse of trees, surrounded by meadows on all sides seeks peace-loving guests. A perfect place to self-isolate and restore some sanity.

For hot nights in summer, a screened in sleeping porch with a futon on a wooden base.

There's nothing like walking on the rolling roads in the area---but there are dogs on all these country roads---looking for deer and birds, then coming home to nestle in to the comfortable sofa in the living room, or, in winter, to tuck in under the down comforters on the bed. A nature preserve is a 15-minute drive away.

Cozy, quiet, a perfect romantic weekend or writing retreat; pleasant living room, bedroom piled with down comforters; the perfect retreat for when you get back from hiking or cross-country skiing 10 minutes away, or downhill skiing at Windham 30 minutes away.

IMPORTANT NOTES: This is a 200-year-old country house, and with that comes country mice, especially in winter, despite our new kitchen. We leave cleaning supplies for you, but it's likely you'll see droppings in the kitchen. We've tried everything to get rid of them, but they are a fact of old-house life in the country.

ALSO: The house does allow a small pet, and we bring our cats there. It is thoroughly cleaned between guests, but if you have severe allergies, you should know that.

Not a party house; it's an older home that needs considerate inhabitants.

An adorable "dollhouse" cottage out in the country of the Catskills, 2.5 hour drive north of Manhattan.

New fridge, newly-painted bathroom, new windows. Furnished with nice, old furniture as you'd expect in a country cottage, and a new double futon in main bedroom, new single bed in second bedroom. Cotton sheets, good pillows.

New furnace (October, 2012) for oil heat.

Downstairs: front porch (excellent for morning coffee in summer), dining area, kitchen, bath, big living room with pull-out queen sofa, comfy easy chairs. Also downstairs: small bedroom with desk, chair, and single bed. Lots of books to get lost in.

Upstairs: sweetest bedroom in the world, painted a buttery off-white, with white dresser, new double futon bed, end tables.

Winter wonderland: we can't promise snow, but the house is about a 30 minute drive up the mountain to the popular ski town of Windham. Cross-country skiing is about ten minutes away in Rensselearville.

Guest access
Entire house, porches, yard.

Other things to note
This is not a luxury home. Don't expect perfection, but it's organized, sweet, and clean.
Double check the fees. Our apologies if you get caught in the higher fee structure from AirBNB.

It's peaceful and quiet year-round.

The house is surrounded by meadows on all sides; you can just see one farmhouse if you stand in the right spot. This is real farming country. Watch deer in the meadows from the terrace or the front porch; walk out the front door and down the road to pass woods with pileated woodpeckers and wood thrush.

Down a rolling country road, you feel you've escaped the city before you even arrive. The house is absolutely quiet, surrounded by meadows on all sides.

A pleasant 45-minute drive to the hip and hopping town of Hudson, with gourmet restaurants, cafes, and world-class antiquing. As of July, 2020, restaurants have re-opened with outdoor service.

A two-minute drive to a convenience store; 15-20 minutes to a good grocery store. Fresh eggs from the farm. Nearby hiking, canoeing, kayaking, flea markets, antiques.

We are Esveay and Peter. In short, we're nice. We are both writers and writing teachers. Predictably, we like to read. Currently on the coffee table: Phillip Lopate's essays (Peter's) May Sarton's fiction (Sarah's), a short novel by Peter Taylor (Sarah's), a manuscript Sarah told someone she'd read (still in envelope), a little vase of pretty yellow flowers past their prime. But we watch tv, too. We are fortunate enough to have two homes, an apartment in NYC and this little house in the Catskills. We're usually in the Catskills for the summer, but want to find people who will love it as we do for some of the summer and for the fall, winter, and spring. We have, at present, three cats. That is the absolute limit. Really. We've used AirBNB a lot, both as hosts and guests, from NYC to Tel Aviv, have of course met marvelous people some of whom make us wish again we spoke more than a little Spanish, Hebrew, French, or Inuktitut. Life motto? Probably the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.
