The Space

Experience the history of a 160-year old Gothic revival mansion in one of the most eclectic cities in North America. Feel at home on your next getaway or business trip with the warmth and charm of Midwestern hospitality. Discover The Livingston Inn -- a Madison bed & breakfast as unique and special as the city itself.

Willow Room
According to local lore, the original property owner, William T. Leitch, grew willow trees along Lake Mendota from cuttings from Napoleon’s grave at St. Helena. The Willow Room features Monet-like flower wallpaper, a queen-size bed, and a beautifully designed mantel around the gas fireplace. The private bathroom, originally a storage area for hoop skirts, contains a spacious shower complete with body sprays.

Guests coming for an extended stay may have access to kitchen and laundry. Please inquire with your reservation.

The House
Built in 1854, The Livingston Inn is an important landmark in the history of Madison. On the National Register of Historic Places as the William T. Leitch House, the home is constructed of local buff-colored sandstone which was quarried in nearby Westport, barged across Lake Mendota, and cut on the building site. In addition to being a prominent landmark in the City of Madison, The Livingston Inn is an important piece of local history. Two of Madison’s first mayors (William T. Leitch, 1862-65 and Moses R. Doyon, 1888-90) lived in the house between the years (phone number hidden) and (phone number hidden), respectively. In addition, a prominent member of the Progressive movement and a close friend of “Fighting Bob” LaFollette lived in the home in the early twentieth century.

The Livingston Inn is a breathtaking home featuring nine fireplaces, eleven-foot first floor ceilings, lake access, and stunning architectural details inside and out. The house features spacious, beautifully appointed guest rooms on the second floor with private baths, working fireplaces, and daily maid service.

The Livingston Inn Bed & Breakfast combines the relaxing comfort of a majestic historic home while subtly providing many modern day conveniences. All guests are served full breakfast daily and may enjoy Wi-Fi, cable TV, online movies, and daily delivery of local and national newspapers. Close to the airport, downtown, the State Capitol, State Street, and the UW-Madison campus, The Livingston Inn is an ideal location for the business or leisure traveler.

The City
Set between lakes Mendota and Monona, Madison is one of only two major American cities built on an isthmus. The Livingston Inn has access to the largest lake, Lake Mendota, where guests may spend a day, or an evening, on the water. An adjacent park offers a bike trail and walking path along the lakeshore, and patrons may wish to continue along the shore, through the downtown area, or to the UW-Madison campus and the iconic Memorial Union – for the Dairy State’s very own Babcock Ice Cream.

For dining and nightlife, The Livingston Inn is conveniently situated. From brew pubs, comedy clubs, one of a kind shops, and a fabulous array of dining options on Madison’s beloved State Street, to the hip dining spots on the wonderfully eclectic Willy Street, guests will find a variety of options for day and night.

  • I arrived late (a little before 9pm) and was warmly greeted by Peggy and her dog Ella who both treated me to a wonderful glass of wine. My room was just perfect and Peggy cheerfully accommodated my request for an early breakfast.
    What a great place!

  • First, Peggy is a charming, engaging and responsive host. Second, the breakfast is too good to be true: omelet, bacon, granola, OJ, coffee, apple crisp and biscotti (delicious home made). I stayed in the Willow room which was spacious and immaculately cleaned. Far larger than a standard hotel room, and with a comfy bed. Location is very convenient to the Lake, the University, State Street and the Capitol. If you are looking for a gym, Capitol Fitness is 4 blocks away on Butler & Washington. There is a cute commercial district just a block away on Johnson Street.
