Guest access

Guests will have access to the entire property, which includes covered parking, bbq area, garden, orchard, vegetable gardens, fish pond and 120 meters of river front. The property is protected by a two meter high concrete wall with large wooden gates that can be locked to ensure privacy and security during your stay.

Interaction with guests

We live in another house on the property, about 50 meters from the main house, but it is private and has it's own entrance from the street.
We will require occasional access from the main gate to the vegetable garden and for river access. We will not approach or enter the house without prior approval.
The gardener comes for a few hours each day, but will not disturb you or come close to the house before 9.00am.

Other things to note

Although the house is only a 3 hour drive (without stops and traffic) from San José, you should take into consideration an hour to clear immigration, baggage and customs, another hour to collect your rental car, and then traffic, restroom coffee and grocery stops. You should calculate at least 6 hours from landing to arriving at the house. We strongly discourage you to drive in Costa Rica at night and it gets dark at around 6.00pm all year round. Therefore, your flight should arrive before midday, otherwise, we suggest spending the night in San José and driving out the following morning.

If renting a car, we strongly recommend that you reserve a 4x4 vehicle. You will not have any problems getting to the house, but you might find the driveway challenging and limit where you can drive to in the area, such as the hot springs and the Cloudbridge Reserve.

We have pets that live in our own house on the property (3 dogs and 1 cat). Please do not feed any of the animals and remember to send Smooki (the cat) home by latest 9.00pm. :) Thanks

The space is absolutely amazing. I had such a relaxing time just enjoying the property. I have literally no complaints! The pictures don’t do the place justice and Angus and Tania were incredibly sweet and attentive hosts. I’ve already recommended the place to friends!

I don't even know where to start... Angus and Tania were the absolute best hosts anyone could ask for. They were incredibly helpful during our entire stay and gave great suggestions for things to do. They went above and beyond in helping us when our travel plans were likely to change and helped us get in touch with the right people. The house is even more beautiful in person than the pictures show. It truly is an oasis set in a serene mountain/jungle location. We were able to find fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs on the property gardens to use for meals every day! We enjoyed many a mornings and evenings on the deck or hammocks looking out on the river and watching the birds with coffee in hand:) The town where the house is located-Chirripo--is incredibly peaceful and made for such a natural way to experience the Costa Rican culture and encounter immensely hospitable and kind people. One day consisted of getting bread, cheese, fish and chocolate all from local families in the town who opened up their homes/stores just for us. All in all we thought thought our stay was heavenly and our hosts Angus and Tania to be extremely helpful with questions and suggestions on where to see sites in the mountain as well as the beach. We hope to make this an annual trip and would highly recommend coming here to anyone we know!

We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful home with a gorgeous surrounding. Angus and Tania have really thought of every personal detail to create a lovely stay at their cozy reprieve. We ARE coming back to stay with them again!! Angus welcomed us giving all the details to ensure that we got the most from our visit. You can't imagine how relaxing it was to sit on the balcony and listen to the rushing water down below. I've stayed lots of places and this is our new favorite!! Thank you for the highlight of our trip!!

Angus's home was stunning! The home and the property were magical. We did most of the recommended activities for the area and were never disappointed. Just spending time on the porch was worth the stay. I highly recommend staying here. Marcela was wonderful!

It's a beautiful location up in the hills above San Isidro. Great privacy, hiking, small tiendas, and the sounds of rushing water. Angus had a small vegetable garden that helped season our food just right. Fruit wasn't ready yet but we bought some at the little farmers market on wed, which was delicious. Angus suggested a lot of great areas to check out...organic chocolate spot, hiking to cloud bridge and visiting the aqua terminales (hot pools). Not many mosquitos until we went through our hike through cloudbridge. Tips: bring a lighter for candles, mosquito spray during your hikes, and buy water. We went to the store called Luferz in San Isidro, which had everything you needed to cook. Also best to have a 4x4 during the rains. Everything turned out lovely and we had a phenomenal honeymoon experience. Thank you Angus! We miss the pups and Smooki!

Kubla Khan is a truly amazing house nestled along a lively river in beautiful Perez Zeledon. You will never feel closer to nature! No matter what direction you travel from the property exit, you are bound to see beautiful plant life, exotic birds, and dense, lush, rolling mountains. Having spent a week at Kubla Khan, we felt more connected to and immersed in mother nature than ever before. Leaving was painful. :( Even days where we chose to relax and not leave the property, we had a blast exploring the path down to the river's edge, the fruit gardens, or just rocking in chairs on the back-porch observing "jungle TV". Inside the house is equally beautiful. The interior is gorgeous! You can open every door and allow the jungle breeze to draft through. We took advantage of every soft surface, hammock or room to relax (which is what we intended to do on this trip) and it was incredible. Truly a mesmerizing place. Angus was a great host. He made us feel so welcomed and gave great recommendations for spots to visit, restaurants to eat at, towns to explore and provided many helpful tips on what to look out for when traveling throughout C.R. He even offered to call a local pizzeria and order in Spanish for us since we don't speak it fluently! We can't recommend this place enough. Life changing. P.S. There is a small, rather stretch of bumpy, unpaved road leading to the house. Our rental vehicle was an SUV which handled it without any issue, but it's something to keep in mind.
