We live in another house on the property, about 50 meters from the main house, but it is private and has it's own entrance from the street.
The gardener comes for a few hours each day, but will not disturb you or come close to the house.
Our neighbourhood is a mixed Tico/Gringo community that gets on very well together. The locals are extremely friendly and will always say hello.
There is a small grocery store that sells limited fruits and vegetables and dried goods just a 10 minute up the road.
On the way to the store, you will pass the cheese farm, where you can buy fresh swiss style cheese, fresh milk and yoghurt and local organic coffee. You will also pass the Xamaritan chocolate factory, where you can buy coffee, cakes and hand made chocolates, as well as partake in a chocolate workshop.
You can also make a call for a freerange farm eggs and chicken delivery or take a longer stroll or short drive up to the trout farm, where you can fish for your own trout and have them cooked their for you or bring them home for the grill!
There are public busses that run from outside the store between San Gerardo and San Isidro throughout the day.
If you wish to arrange a driver for a ride or for a few hours, then this can be arranged locally for a small fee.

Kubla Khan...'a vision in a dream'...is a modern, open planned, minimalist mountain paradise, ideal for a romantic getaway or for a family adventure vacation...
Tanya and Angus were wonderful hosts. Kubla Khan was even better than we had imagined, just gorgeous. The river was right below the balcony and the view was stunning. Rain clouds came over the hills every day for a brief rain storm . It was exhilarating and made for a perfect siesta as the entire front wall was made of folding doors that you could open. The house was beautifully designed and had a comfortable lived in quality, not sterile and modern like some places can be. The kitchen was open and well stocked. All in all, I could not have wanted more, except more time to spend there.
Thanks you Angus and Tanya!
Angus and the Kubla Khan were just fantastic. An amazing location on the bank of the Chirripo River and near the little mountain village of Canaan. We spent hours sitting on the balcony watching the action in front of us. "Jungle TV" as Angus put it ! Angus was also always there to help us out with supplies, and advice on where to go and what to see. Highly recommend his little hideaway.
I surprised my wife on our honeymoon by booking a 5 day stay at Kubla Khan. I cannot emphasize how wonderful this place is. From seeing monkeys across the river to enjoying hot springs to enjoy spectacular views along with wonderful hosts. I highly recommend staying at Kubla Khan.
Angus and Tania are very kind and patient hosts who take seriously their guests enjoyment. Angus put me in touch with a local car rental agency and zip lining tour company and made our stay very relaxing. Tania was very kind enough to take photos of me and my wife on the property.
Kubla Khan was the ideal and idyllic place to start our two-week stay in Costa Rica. The home itself is absolutely gorgeous and comfortably stocked with the necessities. The beautiful view overlooking the river and mountains is nearly indescribable. Our mornings spent drinking coffee on the deck and watching the various birds make their appearance in the trees was a favorite part of our trip. Canaan is a small and charming town. We were here for five days and did not feel pressured to "do" too much, but there was also plenty of activity to be had with the nearby Cloudbridge hikes, "secret gardens", yoga lodge and the river to explore. Angus and Tania were beyond gracious as hosts - genuinely warm, helpful and fun to get to know. They even helped us plan the second leg of our trip in the Osa. I would recommend the Chirripo area to anyone planning to visit Costa Rica and this airbnb spot specifically. Thanks again, A&T!
Angus has a truly one of a kind place in a very special part of Costa Rica. Everyday I woke and and was in compel eye awe of the beautiful surrounding me. The house is gorgeous and very open. It has everything you need for a wonderful and relaxing trip. The river is right in front of the house and there are so many paths and hikes to walk and explore. The hot springs and local cheese and chocolate shops are fun to visit and see how they make their speciality foods. This trip to Costa Rica will never be forgotten because of Angus and his hospitality and his amazing place. Angus called and made sure we had everything we needed. Even made sure eggs and a chicken were there for us before we arrived. He is very thoughtful and had put a lot of care into such a lovely home. Smookie the cat will become your best friend and is simply the best. Thank you Angus and Tatiana we hope to be back soon! cheers and thank you again for making it a very easy and truly relaxing vacation. All the best!!!
Kubla Khan was a beautiful house in Canaan. It is perched on the hillside overlooking the river with spectacular views of the mountains. You can hear the rushing river below (it's like a real-live white noise recording at night).
The house was clearly thoughtfully constructed by Angus and his craftsmanship is beautiful. The house comes with all the kitchen amenities you could need, hot water in a really cool shower, and cozy blankets for the cooler evenings. Smooki, the cat, is like most cats. Happy to rub against you and have her head scratched for a second but isn't one who likes a lot of petting. She generally just followed is into each room and watched us from afar or slept at the end of the bed.
The location was very different from the coastal regions of Costa Rica and we loved it. We had cool days up in the mountains, so we went to the thermal hot springs, walked in the Secret Gardens and explored down by the river by the house. It rained really hard the second day, so we didn't have a chance to hike up in the cloudbridge reserve...hopefully next time.
Angus was extremely communicative and helpful leading up to and during our stay. He and his girlfriend were away in Europe but he still called and emailed daily. His house guide was very helpful and full of great recommendations.

About the Host, Angus
I'm head chef in a yoga and surf retreat on the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica. I love to spend time at the beach surfing, but find that a balance between the beach lifestyle and climate and that of the mountains and river is what makes me love this country so much. I like to spend time inbetween yoga groups at my home relaxing, working on the property and growing fruits and vegetables. The river has a tremendous energy and cleansing properties...and has even offered up the occasional trout or two! I highly recommend diving into the ice cold swimming hole below the property and then lying out on the gigantic black hot rocks to warm through.
I designed and built my house myself and take great pride in keeping it well maintained. I enjoy a few home comforts, when I am not working down in the jungle without electricity, so I may spend the odd afternoon watching some Premiership Football on the television from the hammock.
Freshly squeezed orange juice is a must in the morning from the abundant trees all over the property. Then bake some bread and head down to the river to see if I can catch some lunch. Pick some organic salads and herbs from the garden on the way up to the house. Put the kettle on...a nice cup of tea...and I'm set!
Its the simple things in life that count...I know what I like...and I like what I know!
