Lost in the hills of Kabaragalla in Mandaramnuwara, an old tea estate established in the late 1800s sits gracefully, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The factory, abandoned for 28 years, was tenderly restored to its original glory as 'Tea and Experience Factory'. The fact of Kabaragalla estate fetched the best price at the first ever tea auctioned held in Sri Lanka on 30th July 1883, makes it unique among other tea estates.

The space
The principle intention for this experiential boutique hotel is to provide its visitors with an immersive, artisan journey from tea plucking to packing while creating a luxurious space for rest and relaxation. The locals from the estate have been re-employed at the tea factory to help them sustain their way of life.

The tea factory is a masterpiece of prefabricated industrial engineering with well proportioned , corrugated iron facades with a standardized structural frame. As with everything else of this period, the ingenuity practicality of the Victorian engineer cannot be negated .

1. Plucking - The task of plucking is usually undertaken by women who are paid minimally industry wide. The ideal pluck consists of two leaves and a bud which is collected in a basket strapped to forehead. Each shrub is plucked every 5-6 days, depending on the weather, to obtain the ideal leaf.
2. Weighing - At the end of the each day the plucker's baskets are weighted. The daily average is around 18kg a day. Roughly 4.5 kg of fresh leaves are needed to make 1kg of black tea.
3. Withering - Leaves are withered approximately for 14-16 hours where around 43% of the moisture in the leaves are taken out.
4. Rolling - Leaves are placed on a rolling machine which moves in a circular motion rolling the leaves to induce enzyme activity which triggers the fermentation process.
5. Roll breaking - Leaves are then crushed into smaller particles. The cell walls have been broken to further induce enzymatic reaction.
6. Fermenting - The crushed leaves are now left for about 1.5-3 hours to oxygenate. The leaves change color from a deep green to a light copper color when ready. The broken cells cause a chemical reaction that release tannins & theine.
7. The firing machine or dryer as it;s called, dries the fermented dools with a 90*C heat waves that reduces moisture up to 3%.
8. Grading - Grading will remove stalks and other fibrous matter.
