This was our 8th trip to Kauai in the past decade but our first staying at an AirBnB. The Retreat Center 'Ekolu was exactly as depicted on the web site. Hilary was extremely sensitive to our needs and a very responsive host. The thing that impressed us most was the cleanliness of the accommodations. This is not an easy accomplishment with people checking in and out on a daily basis, coming from the beach or muddy hiking trails. Breakfast items were replenished daily and included breakfast juices, fresh fruit, assorted yogurts, pastries and bagels, coffee, tea and numerous cereal and granola selections. The kitchen contained every appliance and cookware you could possibly need. Perhaps most importantly, after a day of hiking the beds proved to be extremely comfortable. The Retreat is perfectly located whether you intend to spend the majority of your time on the north side of the island or the east-southeast areas.
Fantastic stay! Very well appointed room and marvelous house. We loved the complimentary breakfast and the quiet location. Would come back any day!
Hilary's retreat center was wonderful! We felt right at home and had a great time. We didn't want to leave. We had so much fun meeting new people . Hilary was an excellent hostess. She supplies you with everything you may need as well as fresh fruit, pastries, and other breakfast foods in the morning. It was nice to be able to have dinner at the house with our new friends. Relaxing in the hot tub under the stars was certainly nice too. We will definitely recommend the retreat center.
We had a very enjoyable stay at the Ekolu room. We especially enjoyed the breakfasts of fresh fruit, organic milk and granola, and the fresh coffee. The room has two big windows but is still very private. Internet was generally very good.
My wife and I were very surprised when we drove to the Kauai Retreat Center. It is off a paved road through a small valley. It is back from the highway --- so no road noise. We enjoyed the sound of the birds and the trade-winds blowing through the trees. Local wild roosters also chime in, so you have to kind of tune them out. It is so restful that we will definitely return. The bed was very comfortable. I really liked the louver windows to keep the breeze coming through the room while we slept.
Every morning, there were fresh papayas, oranges, pineapple, pastries and cereals. We prepared our own breakfast, fresh ground coffee to prepare. The refrigerator has a clear plastic bin for each of the guest rooms where we could store our own food. We elected to buy some Kauai grass-fed beef steaks. There is a gas barbecue for our use. The kitchen is fully furnished with a dishwasher, stove, and an oven. It is stocked with cooking utensils, sharp knives, silverware, dishes and serving bowls.
The kitchen, dining area and living room are in an enclosed octagonal building which has a fireplace and a 1/2 bath for the guests use. This building is directly connected to the covered open-air patio.
In the covered open-air patio, there are couches, tables for those who wish to dine outdoors, a ping pong table and the gas barbecue. This open area faces the backyard and an area where there is a Jacuzzi.
Our bedroom (#3 - Ekolu) was good sized. Our bathroom was right next door, but we had to go out into the common hall to reach it. The bathroom was small, but functional and very clean.
We very much want to go back on our next trip to Hawaii. Selfishly, I don't want this place discovered. It was restful and nice with three other couples staying at the same time. We talked and laughed together in the evenings. We shared travel tips about Kauai with each other.
When we arrived, we figured out that we were just supposed to make ourselves at home. On a chalkboard, the rooms were listed and the name of the guests with the dates of their stay. There were some instruction about important things, but otherwise, we were free to enjoy the property and come and go as we liked. Actually, this is a little unnerving from those of us from L.A. area where we are greeted and told what to do and not to do. This was more aloha Hawaiian style and we like it!
We did meet Hillary when she came over to bring fresh fruit, check on the place to see if anything needed doing, and wash some towels and bedding in the common washing machine and dryer that were available for our use.
If you go to Kauai ~ this is the place to stay!

We stayed at Hilary's place for 3 nights and enjoyed every minute of it. Hilary and her dog Todo welcomed us and showed us around the house. The rooms/bathrooms are very clean, everything you need for your vacation is there (towels, beach towels, shower gel, shampoo, etc.) and Hilary also provides continental breakfast every day with croissants, muffins, cereal, joghurts, juices, coffee, etc.
After a long day exploring the island, you can then unwind in the jaccouzi in the garden watching the beautiful sunset.
I definitely can recommend staying there and we are looking forward to coming back!
