About this listing
You walk to the cottage along a short path covered in bamboo leaves, across the stone patio and onto the open deck.
The deck, kitchen and bathroom are all open. The cottage is surrounded by trees and a small garden - A Caribbean country cottage.
The cottage is recently built in the traditional Caribbean style in the garden of Tranquil Farm, an old farm house, tucked away in a wooded valley. This summer 2015 we have just redecorated the cottage and covered the walls in walaba shingles, extended the deck and kitchen and built a small patio.
The cabin is totally eco, with solar energy and uses only collected rainwater. The bedroom is large (16ft x 16ft) with windows on 3 sides. The door on the 4th side leads Narnia like through the wardrobe to the open kitchen and shower.
From the netted four poster bed, you look through balcony and garden to the hills covered in lemon grass. There are comfy chairs and a double hammock on the balcony, perfect for a lounge with a book (there is a selection) and a glass of wine...or two!
The kitchen is open to the garden. It is simple but has everything you could need, with a 3 ring table top cooker and a gas fridge.
We also put a welcome pack to see you through your first night and breakfast, and something to toast your arrival !
Although we are in this quiet and hidden valley it is only a short and rather lovely drive down Fig Tree Drive ( also known as the Rain Forest Road), to the nearest beach at Carlisle Bay. Beyond Carlisle Bay are some of the best beaches in Antigua laid out before you along the West Coast.
The cottage is your home while you are here, with a small private garden which has a second hammock between a couple of trees!
Interaction with Guests
If I am at home do feel free to come and ask any questions, I love meeting the people who come and stay, its a treat for me - I will otherwise leave you alone to have your holiday!
Although my house is approx. 100 ft away - my house looks away from the cottage so I cannot see nor do I hear music or anything from the cottage.
We live in a quiet and remote spot about half a mile from the nearest village - very peaceful with only the sounds of nature ( the odd car, maybe one a day). Thats not to say that nature is always quiet - tree frogs, crickets and the odd donkey can be a bit of a surprise!
We feel more remote than perhaps is actually true - its 20 minutes South to English Harbour or North St. Johns, but the bad road can make it feel more cut off.
English Harbour is where I head for restaurants and bars - a good mix is found in one small area. Most of the best beaches are about 20 + minutes in the other direction along the West Coast.
To get into the valley where Tranquil Farm cottage is situated you do need a 4 x 4 or some form of transport that is high off the road. The road is an old concrete road and is in bad condition - standard cars hit the bottom.
We are about 1/2 a mile from the nearest village - so public transport is not really available.
Other Things to Note
The power for the cottage is solar - please ask me to show you how it works so if there is any problems you know how to turn things off.
There are solar lights on the path to the cottage, but depending on the sun they do not always last late into the night - so we have torches for you to use. There is also a local mobile phone for booking restaurants, or if you get lost !
Just be thoughtful - thats the main rule.
Please don't go out leaving candles or oil lamps burning.
We have rainwater in holding tanks and no other water supply, this should be fine but we are a dry island and have been in a severe drought for a while now - so please when its dry dont have showers that are toooo long!
Smoking outside please...
The cottage has wireless internet with a router of its own. Please turn this off when not in use to save power.
