About this listing
Durhamstown is a Norman Castle dating from 1420.The original vaulted rooms, of which there are 4, are intact with 600 year old plaster still there!. As it is the oldest continuously inhabited house in the County of Meath, it is now a Recorded Monument. Over the centuries various additions have been added on & you can go from the Middle Ages to the Victorian Era in one bound! Downstairs you have the Kitchen, the Hall, the Dining room, the Drawing Room & the Music room all interconnected which is ideal for large gatherings & parties. It is decorated in a sympathetic but eclectic style- antiques mingling with junk shop treasures.
It is very rural, yet Dublin is a mere 30 minutes away (there's a bus service from the town centre to Dublin every 30 minutes) if some Razzmatazz and Culture is required! Meath is full of Historic and Prehistoric remains:New Grange, Lough Crew, Tara etc. as well as Riding, Fishing and Hunting. There are some lovely walks either on the Beaches or in the Woods. Our local town has some great Pubs. An Art Centre, The Solstice. For some local colour The Causey Farm is a must-you learn to dance a jig and bake bread-proper Irish Craic! We have the Posh Nosh on Fridays. There are several Restaurants in Navan.
We have 8 double rooms in total. You can either book the whole castle (this listing) or a room of your choice (please check our other listing). We also rent the Castle for private events like Weddings, Wedding Buffets, Christmas parties Anniversaries, Big Family Get together, Group Bonding sessions. etc.
Durhamstown is unique in being a Castle so close to Dublin & People say the most fabulous things about their time here!
The Castle can be rented for a whole week or a weekend & you can always book a fabulous Dinner cooked & served by the Castle staff. Very Downton Abbey!
Our Guests have access to all areas-they can even share their breakfast toast with the donkeys-Elf & Safety. The House & grounds are theirs for the duration of their stay.
Interaction with Guests
We can give people total Privacy - we are totally led by our guests. Some people like hanging out in the Kitchen as we cook their gourmet meals others like an exclusive hire of the Castle & the place to themselves. We either retire to the Coach House or use the time to visit friends & family.
Our neighbourhood is very rural. The whole Celtic Tiger madness passed it by. Very lush rich farming land that changes very little. Ireland is famous for its grass & our Cattle & horses are famous the world over.Every farmer dreams of breeding a "Shergar"! What is lovely about Meath is the richness of our ancient monuments-some pre-dating the Pyramids for God's sake.....a lot of them untouched & original which guests find really exciting. It's like you're discovering them. We also have an Art School nearby where you can study Life Drawing for a modest fee. There are two catch & release fishing places within 12 kms. An excellent riding stables & some beautiful golf courses. All within easy reach. A Coach can be arranged for day tripping.
There is good Public transport from Navan which runs frequently. We also have a bus service to the Airport from Navan. We have a private bus for the House as well- to get groups to & from non-public transport spots.
This is a VERY old House so needs "gentling" along!
The Furniture is Largely Antique so rowdy dancing on table tops is not recommended!
Try the Floor in the Kitchen, its flagged-perfect for doing the Highland Fling.
We've had wonderful parties here and it really comes alive with lots of people.
The rules are presumably what all Grown-ups do; clean up after you, respect other peoples property and for Goodness sakes-Enjoy!!
