This is the Colonial Room-all the furnishings are from different parts of the globe. An African Bedspread, English glazed chintz curtains, Japanese prints, Amazonian table cloth, etc.
Durhamstown is a Norman Castle dating from 1420.The original vaulted rooms, of which there are 4, are intact with 600 year old plaster still there!. As it is the oldest continuously inhabited house in the County of Meath, it is now a Recorded Monument. Over the centuries various additions have been added on & you can go from the Middle Ages to the Victorian Era in one bound! Downstairs you have the Kitchen, the Hall, the Dining room, the Drawing Room & the Music room all interconnected which is ideal for large gatherings & parties. It is decorated in a sympathetic but eclectic style- antiques mingling with junk shop treasures.
It is very rural, yet Dublin is a mere 30 minutes away (there's a bus service from the town centre to Dublin every 30 minutes) if some Razzmatazz and Culture is required! Meath is full of Historic and Prehistoric remains:New Grange, Lough Crew, Tara etc. as well as Riding, Fishing and Hunting. There are some lovely walks either on the Beaches or in the Woods. Our local town has some great Pubs. An Art Centre, The Solstice. For some local colour The Causey Farm is a must-you learn to dance a jig and bake bread-proper Irish Craic! We have the Posh Nosh on Fridays. There are several Restaurants in Navan.
We have 8 double rooms in total. You can either book the whole castle (this listing) or a room of your choice (please check our other listing). We also rent the Castle for private events like Weddings, Wedding Buffets, Christmas parties Anniversaries, Big Family Get together, Group Bonding sessions. etc.
Durhamstown is unique in being a Castle so close to Dublin & People say the most fabulous things about their time here!
The Castle can be rented for a whole week or a weekend & you can always book a fabulous Dinner cooked & served by the Castle staff. Very Downton Abbey!
Our Guests have access to all areas-they can even share their breakfast toast with the donkeys-Elf & Safety. The House & grounds are theirs for the duration of their stay.
Interaction with Guests
We can give people total Privacy - we are totally led by our guests. Some people like hanging out in the Kitchen as we cook their gourmet meals others like an exclusive hire of the Castle & the place to themselves. We either retire to the Coach House or use the time to visit friends & family.
Our neighbourhood is very rural. The whole Celtic Tiger madness passed it by. Very lush rich farming land that changes very little. Ireland is famous for its grass & our Cattle & horses are famous the world over.Every farmer dreams of breeding a "Shergar"! What is lovely about Meath is the richness of our ancient monuments-some pre-dating the Pyramids for God's sake.....a lot of them untouched & original which guests find really exciting. It's like you're discovering them. We also have an Art School nearby where you can study Life Drawing for a modest fee. There are two catch & release fishing places within 12 kms. An excellent riding stables & some beautiful golf courses. All within easy reach. A Coach can be arranged for day tripping.
There is good Public transport from Navan which runs frequently. We also have a bus service to the Airport from Navan. We have a private bus for the House as well- to get groups to & from non-public transport spots.
This is a VERY old House so needs "gentling" along!
The Furniture is Largely Antique so rowdy dancing on table tops is not recommended!
Try the Floor in the Kitchen, its flagged-perfect for doing the Highland Fling.
We've had wonderful parties here and it really comes alive with lots of people.
The rules are presumably what all Grown-ups do; clean up after you, respect other peoples property and for Goodness sakes-Enjoy!!
I booked Sue and Dave's home for a hen party weekend with 14 guests. It was a perfect venue for such an event and prior to arrival Sue helped me organise the weekend by providing details and options for dinner, a cocktail event, nightclub and transport to and from their home which all helped make the weekend a huge success. Moreover, Sue and Dave were perfect hosts; very welcoming and warm, they were there when needed but also gave us our privacy as well. Their home is absolutely fabulous, a lovely building with fabulous rooms, all heated well and very comfy. Finally, we booked Sue and Dave's 'posh nosh' dinner for Saturday night which was enjoyed by all, definitely worth considering if staying. I would have no hesitation in recommending this property for a visit, you will have a great stay and will be looked after very well by Sue and Dave. I hope to visit again :-)
The castle was amazing! We were welcomed very warmly by Sue and Dave. All the hens had a great time and we felt like the castle was our home for the 2 nights we stayed there. Sue and Dave were helpful when we needed something but left us alone to our own devices, which was great. I would highly recommend staying with Sue & Dave, the castle has a wonderful atmosphere and I will miss the 2 donkeys and their very cute little dog!
Thanks again from all the Hens xx
Hi Sheree, we certainly enjoyed you enjoying the old place! It's the big reward for doing this job; seeing & hearing(!) people having such fun. Neighbours asked me had we had some children as well & I explained it was just super-happy hens! thanks for leaving the place so tidy as well it makes a big difference. give my best regards to all the hens & I'm sure kate will have a lovely Wedding. Sue & Dave.
Sue and Dave are brilliant hosts! The warm reception and convivial environment made for a great stay. The castle is full of character and style, with a wonderful kitchen that truly is the heart of the home. The bedrooms are are all individual and spacious, and although a large property, everywhere had a cosy, homely feel. We had a roaring fire in the lounge, tasty home made food and plenty of well manicured outdoor space to go for a walk between our activities. A real home from home and highly recommended :)
Sue & her wonderful staff were amazing. I can't thank her enough for opening up her house to us for our very special family occasion. The ambience of the castle was such that you felt instantly at ease. Sue and her husband (who we hope to meet one day) had left beautiful breads, sausages & bacon for our breakfasts which went down very well. On the Saturday evening we hosted a special dinner for my parents. The dinning room looked amazing and was only topped by the delicious meal that was served by Sue's staff. It was just perfect.
Thank you Sue. Best Wishes. Lesley, a definite Fan!!!

We really love our guests to feel "they're in their Granny's" when they stay here. (that would be a pretty cool Granny, mind you!) Its a drop- in-have-a-cup-of-coffee- kind of place anyway.
