The space

Durhamstown is a Norman Castle dating from 1420.The original vaulted rooms, of which there are 4, are intact with 600 year old plaster still there!. As it is the oldest continuously inhabited house in the County of Meath, it is now a Recorded Monument. Over the centuries various additions have been added on & you can go from the Middle Ages to the Victorian Era in one bound! Downstairs you have the Kitchen, the Hall, the Dining room, the Drawing Room & the Music room all interconnected which is ideal for large gatherings & parties. It is decorated in a sympathetic but eclectic style- antiques mingling with junk shop treasures.

It is very rural, yet Dublin is a mere 30 minutes away (there's a bus service from the town centre to Dublin every 30 minutes) if some Razzmatazz and Culture is required! Meath is full of Historic and Prehistoric remains:New Grange, Lough Crew, Tara etc. as well as Riding, Fishing and Hunting. There are some lovely walks either on the Beaches or in the Woods. Our local town has some great Pubs. An Art Centre, The Solstice. For some local colour The Causey Farm is a must-you learn to dance a jig and bake bread-proper Irish Craic! We have the Posh Nosh on Fridays. There are several Restaurants in Navan.

We have 8 double rooms in total. You can either book the whole castle (this listing) or a room of your choice (please check our other listing). We also rent the Castle for private events like Weddings, Wedding Buffets, Christmas parties Anniversaries, Big Family Get together, Group Bonding sessions. etc.

Durhamstown is unique in being a Castle so close to Dublin & People say the most fabulous things about their time here!

The Castle can be rented for a whole week or a weekend & you can always book a fabulous Dinner cooked & served by the Castle staff. Very Downton Abbey!

Guest access

Our Guests have access to all areas-they can even share their breakfast toast with the donkeys-Elf & Safety. The House & grounds are theirs for the duration of their stay.

Interaction with guests

We can give people total Privacy - we are totally led by our guests. Some people like hanging out in the Kitchen as we cook their gourmet meals others like an exclusive hire of the Castle & the place to themselves. We either retire to the Coach House or use the time to visit friends & family.

This is a VERY old House so needs "gentling" along!
The Furniture is Largely Antique so rowdy dancing on table tops is not recommended!
Try the Floor in the Kitchen, its flagged-perfect for doing the Highland Fling.
We've had wonderful parties here and it really comes alive with lots of people.
The rules are presumably what all Grown-ups do; clean up after you, respect other peoples property and for Goodness sakes-Enjoy!!

great grounds, amazing bedrooms, fabulous and responsive hosts who were fun to meet and helpful with suggestions for what to do and see. This seems like it's primarily a wedding venue and lodging for wedding guests on weekends, my only complaint is that the kitchen- while so great with an Aga and conventional stove and a huge fridge- was not uniformly set up for cooking: about 100 coffee cups and only 3 cutting knives that were in pretty tough condition. As this is my only complaint, you can tell we had a really great time and the hosts were fabulous.

Response from Sue:
To be strictly fair we only have 12 weddings a year here! there are tea cups coffee cups, demi tasse cups, vintage cups; i checked for glasses & i have to say it was pretty impressive! Wine, champagne, pint glasses for guinness, tumblers, slim jims, water glasses etc. the cutlery was plentiful to avoid having to do loads of wash ups in the dishwasher. Large saucepans, a pressure cooker, a milk pan, a matching set of new stainless steel saucepans, frying pans, griddle pan, baking sheets & roasting pans. And lots more!

What a great place to relax at the end of a busy day touring the Boyne Valley. Sue and Dave prepared delicious meals that we all 15 (ages 10-68) of us enjoyed. We felt like we were attending the Kings feast each night. Michelle, Marta and the other ladies who cared for us were kind, helpful, friendly and fun. Whether we were practicing new hurling skills or playing games in the evening, the castle provided great spaces for us to enjoy ourselves. What a perfect place for our family to create beautiful lifetime memories together.

Great stay. Sue and Dav are wonderfully sincere people that we enjoyed visiting with. Our grandkids enjoyed it as much as I did. We had a large group, so we had the whole house to ourselves. Just wonderful.

My (now!) husband and I chose Durhamstown for our wedding venue, reception, and lodgings and couldn't be happier with our experience. Sue and Dave are the perfect hosts, make amazing food, and really make you feel at home; definitely went above and beyond our expectations! The pictures scarcely do the house and grounds justice. Our guests were totally blown away and we were so glad we were able to make our destination wedding a reality.

Perfect place for a special birthday celebration. Fabulous location, spacious home, gorgeous environment...but the best part of our stay was the hosts. Sue, Dave and Ruby are professional, kind, creative and talented. They are flexible problem solvers who went way beyond the extra mile to make our week long stay a perfect experience. We had delicious gourmet dinners prepared for celebrations, an amazing DJ for a night of dancing and surprise gifts of fresh grown goodies and warm home made bread appear seemingly out of the blue. They created a comfortable ambience that made us feel relaxed and at home. We are grateful for this unique and joyous experience.

We had an amazing time. Our hosts and the estate were great. We rented the whole house for a 70th birthday party and had a hudge family gathering. The house is old and unique with lots of nooks and crannies. We all had a lot of fun there

Hi Rhys & Geri, I think you win the prize for being the most appreciative & least demanding large group! Well done & so glad you all enjoyed it. Hugs from all at the Castle. Dave & Sue

Sue and Dave are brilliant hosts! The warm reception and convivial environment made for a great stay. The castle is full of character and style, with a wonderful kitchen that truly is the heart of the home. The bedrooms are are all individual and spacious, and although a large property, everywhere had a cosy, homely feel. We had a roaring fire in the lounge, tasty home made food and plenty of well manicured outdoor space to go for a walk between our activities. A real home from home and highly recommended :)
