Desa Sanctuary, The Village offers unique accommodations in original antique wooden homes that have been refurbished and restored offering all the modern comforts. Just the right mix of Bali Modern with traditional hand carved Javanese Joglos perched atop open floor plans.
The Village is a private and secure residence situated down a lane on the same street as the famous healer of EAT, PRAY, LOVE. Just minutes from the center of town....ideal for those coming on retreat to Ubud, the cultural center of Bali.
The Rumah Kampung, is an indigenous Balinese Village Rumah or house, complete with it's own terrace. It is one of our newest additions and is the perfect size house for one or two persons. It features a full size bed and sitting area with table and chair. An indoor/outdoor bath and small kitchenette make it a perfect home away from home! Rumah Kampung enjoys Garden views.
Rumah Kampung accommodates two persons and is USD $50 per night including breakfast.
WIFI is available everywhere in our Village....and it's FREE!
A short distance from Ubud center, Desa Sanctuary is a great place to make your home away from home. A full staff of delightful helpers makes this the best vacation...you'll never have to lift a finger!
What a wonderful place!!!!
I have been to Ubud several times but only this time I found this little jewel. Here is why I find this place is great:
- Lovely design (traditional Indonesian house) and very clean.
- It's a small place, there are only 5 'rooms' (bungalows) in this property. Hence, there are not hundreds of other hotel guests roaming around.
- Very friendly and helpful staff! Ibu Ketut gave me interesting insights into life in Ubud :-)
Other things to take into account:
- This is a perfect place if you want to chill out but not if you want to meet people and party. I was extremely happy because I wanted a quiet place and privacy but if you are a funky party animal, this might not be the place for you :-)
- Unlike Monkey Forest Street or Hanoman Street, Jalan Raya Pengosekan has NO sidewalk so walking on it especially at night, is very unpleasant since you have to 'compete' with motor bikes, cars, trucks and everything else. Walking from Jalan raya Pengosekan to the centre of Ubud (= the beginning of Monkey Forest/Hanoman street) takes around 15mins (I live in London so I DO walk :-)). I'd strongly recommend taking taxi from the location to the beginning of Monkey Forest Rd.
In a nutshell: I will come back!!!!!
My partner Simon and I spent the first 5 days of our 10 day trip here in Ubud and we agree it was our favourite place and wished we had stayed longer. Our little 'writer's cabin' was perfect, and more sophisticated than the photos let on - the air-conditioner was perfect and cooled the room in minutes, allowing us the best sleep on our entire trip. The mozzy net kept critters out and they even had an anti-mosquito device for us. We are most grateful though for the water fountain in our kitchen ensuring us unlimited cups of tea and water and the amazing breakfast that comes at your request (at no added cost). I recommend the banana pancakes.
To get around I would suggest renting a motorbike which is easy through the person at the front desk, its only $5 / day + petrol which is super cheap. This way you come and go as you like, which is invaluable as the place is in no way central enough to walk to the main hub of Ubud considering the heat, lack of sidewalk and the burden of carrying water and shopping.
The only reason we gave 4 instead of 5 stars to this amazing bungalow is because we felt the houses were a little too close together and too often we were disturbed by the sounds of other travelers and their conversation/splashing / getting about. You're really at each other's mercy here, and not as private as I had thought from my original website impression.
Having said that - definitely stay here if you're looking for something a little more different and less touristy. The hand-made houses are gorgeous, the people super helpful and Ubud a million more times soulful and cultured than the hubs of Seminyak and Kuta. Couldn't recommend this place enough!
Gorgeous little tree hut with all the comforts of home. The staff was wonderful and took care of anything we needed. Loved it and would go back in a heartbeat!
Dave and Brenda have done a wonderful job of setting up a relaxing oasis on the outskirts of Ubud! Each accommodation is unique and they all face a beautiful pool. Sanctuary is only a few minutes by car outside of the town centre and the surroundings are quiet. Both the owners and the employees are extremely friendly and are more than happy to help you out with whatever you need. My only complaint was that breakfast was not enough. Having a choice of two items instead of one would be a lot better. A wonderful stay!
Fantastic place! We loved our time there. It is a little bit out of Ubud but walk-able. We enjoyed the peace and quite - everything worked well and was very clean. Lovely staff
Nice, very quiet, beautiful, clean and interesting place. Wonderful garden, amazing house with marvelous interior! The stuff was very helpful and attentive. Definitely recommend this place for a long as well as for a short staying!
I have stayed at Brenda and David's little renovated old Balinese house. It was a fantastic stay and experience away from the new Ubud with shopping streets and fancy restaurants.
I made us of a driver to pick me up in the south as recommended and that went perfect.
Very friendly, helpful and kind staff made the stay perfect. Great place!
We were only here briefly, for one night, but it is absolutely beautiful and quiet and indeed charming. One of our favorite places that we stayed. Staff was great too.
Great Place. If you are looking for an authentic Balinese place stay here. It is way more than just a room, nice environment with plenty of palms, trees and other greens, loved it :) and on top there was the very friendly and helpful staff. Perfect!
Truly a lovely experience! The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. The property is absolutely beautiful, clean, and well kept.
The air conditioning in our room was broken when we arrived, so we relocated to The Writer's retreat- which we didn't mind at all- for first two nights, and stayed in Rumah Kampung the last night- both were beautiful and charming.
It is a bit far from town, but no problem with a scooter. There is no sidewalk for the first 5 minutes of the walk and traffic can be a bit hectic if you choose to walk. They are happy to help arrange a scooter, which is inexpensive.
The driver the recommend is incredibly friendly, although a bit on the expensive side. It was 250,000 to get picked up from Ubud, and I had read online that it is typically (phone number hidden) with other drivers. He then drove us to the mountains to our next lodge, about 2 hours away from Ubud, and charged 500,000 (we hadn't asked the price before we he drove us). It felt quite expensive, but he assured us it was the normal price. I had read some other drivers charged 500,000 for a full day tour of the island, and I then checked the price with the place he dropped us off, and their driver would have picked us up from Ubud for 350,000. Again, he was incredibly friendly and nice, but note that the driver the recommend is quite expensive if you are on a tight budget, which we were.
Overall I would highly recommend this very friendly staff and charming location if you don't mind being a bit out of town, renting a scooter, and have a little extra money to spend if you choose to use their driver.
