The Space

Desa Sanctuary, The Village offers unique accommodations in original antique wooden homes that have been refurbished and restored offering all the modern comforts. Just the right mix of Bali Modern with traditional hand carved Javanese Joglos perched atop open floor plans.

The Village is a private and secure residence situated down a lane on the same street as the famous healer of EAT, PRAY, LOVE. Just minutes from the center of town....ideal for those coming on retreat to Ubud, the cultural center of Bali.
Our very own Rumah Tinggi ..."The Tall House"

Set above the Village, Rumah Tinggi has sweeping views of the rice paddies, pool and gardens. This beautiful, spacious, Rumah can be configured as one King bed, or two twin beds.

This room is the favorite of all the writers we have ever had stay with us. A well placed desk overlooking the rice paddies at which to commune with nature or friends, a casual and comfortable sofa with plenty of room to spread out....Rumah Tinggi is a great place to come home to!

Daily rates of $50 per night, including breakfast.
Additional occupants (up to 3 persons total) is $15/night/person.

WIFI is available everywhere in our Village....and it's FREE!

A short distance from Ubud center, Desa Sanctuary is a great place to make your home away from home. A full staff of delightful helpers makes this the best vacation...you'll never have to lift a finger!

  • Ubud, in my humble traveler's opinion, is a must-see in Bali, Indonesia. We were fortunate to make it a part of our stay in this island with David and Brenda's hospitality. The villa is nestled right before the major area of Ubud, away from the many more touristy parts, so it really gives you a sense of the local neighborhood through its sights and sounds. The villa itself is very comfortable and spacious, with all of the modern amenities including a hot shower, coffee and breakfast, a beautiful pool and wi-fi. The rooms are also fully enclosed and air conditioned. On the other hand, our friends stayed at a different property that had an "open air" architecture with no AC, leaving room for many mosquitoes and humid nights.

We met David and Brenda briefly, who were very kind and very hospitable. The staff also were excellent, all speaking English and providing a very comfortable stay.

One more note, there are many cocks all throughout Ubud, and will start singing early in the morning. It is part of the experience and one that I enjoyed, but for those who may be light sleepers and/or not used to it, bring earplugs. :)

  • The sanctuary was beautiful and had a lovely ambiance, staff were great, the whole area was lovely, only criticisms would be the beds pushed together, and we didn't have a view of anything really. I got the impression I would see sweeping rice fields. But to be fair we were out through the day! Perfect place to relax! Would definitely stay again!

  • Welcoming house and very helpful staff: they organized the airport pickup and helped us with organizing our visit in the Ubud area.

The room was clean and spacious, the bathroom original, the swimming pool great and great local breakfast.

We could rent a scooter directly from the hotel. And with the scooter it took us 10 min to get to Ubud centre. Actually this was the best way to visit all the nice temples and rice paddies.

    Thank you!

  • It's the first time I used Airbnb and we had a very pleasant stay at the Sanctuary. Booking was smooth, all members of the staff we encountered were smily and helpful and the little house was clean, well maintained and comfortable. Worth every penny. The shared pool was clean and much a comfort after an exhausting tour in the day. After visiting Central Ubud, we were very glad that we decided to stay a bit outskirt to avoid the chaos. It's easy to get around by motorbike - which we rented via the help of the staff. I also recommend browsing through the advertisement pamphlets for tours and restaurants in the welcoming folder. We booked our cycling tour and elephant safari tour and had a great time! Ubud has a lot more motorbikes and despite some reasonable distance from the main road, we could hear some motorbike noise during the night. But it didn't bother us or affect our sleep. All in all I would think the location balances convenience and quietness pretty well.

  • We stayed at Desa Sanctuary during the BaliSpirit Festival and had a great time! The room is spacious and aesthetically furnished, and the whole place really is a sanctuary of calm in busy Ubud. It was in a great location for walking to and from the open air concert area at ARMA just up the road, and in perfect contrast to the noise and high energy environemnt fo the festival. The staff were very kind and helpful, and we felt very safe. A morning swim in the clean pool followed by a tasty fresh breakfast and plenty of privacy made for great starts to the day, and we danced so much each night that we never heard the dogs bark or the roosters crow. ;) Definitely recommend this lovely little sanctuary for short or longer stays in Ubud, and it would indeed be suitable for inspired writing! During a hunger crisis we also found out that there is a Warung nearby that delivers amazing Indonesian food right to your room (we've lived in Indo for 3 years and have not had such great food for that price yet!). What's not to love!?

  • We really enjoyed our stay at the Desa Santuary. The room was great, a good bed, AC works great, quiet, nice pool, nice poolside lounge chairs, but what made it super was the warm, friendly hospitality. The staff there are extra friendly but not intrusive. Always helpful with good English. We had Nanget drive us around to all the big attractions, and he was a great driver (email hidden). It was really good value for the money. Highly recommended! Get a scooter, walking is difficult for lack of sidewalks, and it's easier than it may look, and 50,000 ($5) per day is well worth it.

  • Booked this place after a frightful stay in a place in Ubud. I was with my girlfriend and we were so relived to be in a new spot that was so nice. The room was fantastic and we loved all cool Bali art touches like the big buddah over the bed. The staff was fantastic and took care of our every need. This place is a bit outside of Ubud but its fine if you rent a scooter. Plus staying outside of town is a lot nicer and quieter.
I would stay again in this place for sure. David and Brenda are fantastic as well and really made us feel at home. Recommended!

David, my husband was a set designer and furniture designer for the movie industry in Los Angeles for thirty years and worked with the tops in the industry....Steven Spielberg, Jodie Foster, Robert Redford, Bruce Springsteen and many more. His built the Captains Chair for Star Trek Insurrection and had the most "ordered" bed in TV history from the TV hit, "Mad about You". He designed furniture for many top Restaurants in Los Angeles from the Saddle Peak Lodge in Malibu to Malibu Adobe with Ali McGraw. His resume is extensive and his client list is long....Billy Crystal, David Hasselhof, Arnold Schwarzanegger to Keenan Wayans. He has translated that skill into building ten amazingly different houses since he's come to Bali. Our house is amazing and you will see why he is so in demand! I have a variety of interests that keep me busy. I was a hairdresser for 30 years in the US and clients still find me, even in Bali. I love doing hair and spending quality time with people. I have spent years doing spiritual growth work and now work with others with addiction and codependency issues and also do Money Coaching. I love this work and the chance to give back what I was taught. I've been an artist my whole life so our home is filled with original art ( mine and others) and I have an awesome studio..Anyone that loves to paint will fall in love here. My latest passion is teaching Zumba, What a blast! As you can see, we are both loving our life and filling the hours manifesting our dreams. We both are creative artists and love to explore the world and the people in it. Since we've been in Bali we've been taking in South East Asia. We love Vietnam, and Thailand for their amazing cuisine. We are frequently traveling, so we are sorry that we don't get to meet all our guests, but we leave you in the hands of an amazing staff and manager, Sakming, who will be your contact person.
