Myself and my friend Laura stayed at Desa Sanctuary for a fortnight from 3rd March until 16th March and can honestly say we had the most amazing time.
Our room was beautiful, clean and with a very comfortable large bed. The pool area was lovely in amongst the trees, such a beautiful setting.
Every single staff member that works at Desa Sanctuary is wonderful - we were looked after from the word go and they made our stay so very special. Thank you all t want to leave Ubud and would go back there and stay at Desa Sanctuary in a heartbeat.
The place is even better then expected because it is rich of vegetation and serenity.
The staff was very friendly and made us live a nice experience.
Will go back for sure.
From the beginning of my stay until I had to leave, my experience at David & Brenda's Rumah Tinggi was wonderful. I loved having a room upstairs & tucked away in the corner of the property. The space was bright & comfortably furnished, the outdoor bathroom spacious, & the small kitchen & fridge very useful. It was great to have a supply of Bali coffee and to be able to make it in my room whenever I felt like it.
All of the staff members at The Sanctuary were extremely welcoming, friendly, and responsive to any requests I made. Every morning I enjoyed delicious banana pancakes and fresh fruit that they prepared for me. To top it off, breakfast was delivered to my room! A big thank you to all of the staff!
It is a bit of a walk into Ubud. I walked when I felt like it, but other days I asked for a scooter ride into Ubud. Someone was always more than happy to give me a ride any time I needed one & the charge was nominal.
I will definitely stay here again! Staying at The Sanctuary made my vacation in Bali very special. Thank you.
Sak Ming and her team were wonderful, the listing was as described. It is not a resort so don't expected clean white towels and a full waiters service. They offer a taste of village life with the roosters crowing, a beautiful pool to swim in, rooms that feel homely. It only has 4 cottages so you are greeted all the staffin first name basis. It's a little out of town and as there is no restaurant a scooter is recommended to get around on. Maybe not for everyone but I thoroughly recommend this place.
What a beautiful place to stay! Rumah Tinggi was more beautiful than the photos. The décor is more casually elegant, it is light & bright and the ceiling is wonderfully high. The green outlook was stunning too.
We extended our stay already and wanted to return there after visiting other towns but the room was unfortunately booked.
A special mention to Sap Ming who handled the booking and returned messages almost instantly. Nothing was ever too much trouble. And also to Tamang and Little Ketut who both went out of their way to assist however they could. On our last day we had to leave super early and they surprised us by making breakfast for us. We weren't expecting it. And to top things off when they saw we were racing around ready to leave, they found plastic containers so we could take our unfinished breakfasts with us. Everyone was so kind and caring... And very funny!
The villa is quite a walk from the centre (especially in the heat) so they also quickly organised a scooter for us for $5 a day. We had an absolute ball flying around. Much better than a car that often gets stuck in traffic. We fell in love with Ubud and staying at Sanctuary was a big part of that. I highly recommend!
"Writers Fav!" was an absolutely lovely haven! It is exactly as pictured - a peaceful spot just off the main road into Ubud (if coming from the direction of the airport). The day time staff -most specifically Ketuk (sp?)- were gracious and ever so helpful. As everyone else has mentioned - delicious breakfast and, even when the weather temporarily knocked out the power, the hot water was still working :) ! It is a walk into town, as also mentioned by previous reviewers. Take a look on (website hidden) maps to see if it's too far of a walk for you (if walking at night - the last 5-7 mins or so is in dark (no street lights) and on a narrow road side). If you are on a motorbike/with car, distance is no issue.
One note - as of Dec 2014 - when you make your 'airport-to-Ubud' transport arrangements, it could be cheaper to go with a private self-arranged car. "Writers Fav"-arranged taxis are 350,000 Rupiah. Fuel rates apparently went up recently but that aside I saw lower posted rates on the street and learned of lower rates through other travelers (e.g. (website hidden)(phone number hidden)-Airport_taxi_to_Ubud_from_Denpasar-Ubud_Bali.html and, for ex, (website hidden)). But if you reserve a car through "Writers Fav", the driver will be waiting for you as you come out of customs and get you on your way asap/just as promised without worrying about getting lost etc.! As often goes with travel - this may be one of those situations where you choose between ease and $$.
Cheers and enjoy your time at "Writers Fav"!
Thank you for your feedback.....yes....we do charge slightly more for our drivers to come get you, but they make a double trip.- from Ubud to the airport and back to Ubud....the biggest reason we recommend our drivers though is that they KNOW where they are going. Unfortunately Airport taxis are not so familiar with our Village so the possibility of getting lost is higher which we find is very stressful when you are just arriving and don't speak the language....!
I'm not sure what happened with your communication with Taman but she is our most senior staff and very responsible, so I am thinking it was just a forgetfulness...we apologize.
The Sanctuary team were amazing. The space was great, it was perfect thank you!

David, my husband was a set designer and furniture designer for the movie industry in Los Angeles for thirty years and worked with the tops in the industry....Steven Spielberg, Jodie Foster, Robert Redford, Bruce Springsteen and many more. His built the Captains Chair for Star Trek Insurrection and had the most "ordered" bed in TV history from the TV hit, "Mad about You".
He designed furniture for many top Restaurants in Los Angeles from the Saddle Peak Lodge in Malibu to Malibu Adobe with Ali McGraw. His resume is extensive and his client list is long....Billy Crystal, David Hasselhof, Arnold Schwarzanegger to Keenan Wayans.
He has translated that skill into building ten amazingly different houses since he's come to Bali. Our house is amazing and you will see why he is so in demand!
I have a variety of interests that keep me busy. I have spent years doing spiritual growth work and now work with others with addiction and codependency issues. I love this work and the chance to give back what I was taught. I've been an artist my whole life so our home is filled with original art ( mine and others) and I have an awesome studio..Anyone that loves to paint will fall in love here. My latest passion is teaching Zumba, What a blast!
As you can see, we are both loving our life and filling the hours manifesting our dreams. We both are creative artists and love to explore the world and the people in it.
Since we've been in Bali we've been taking in South East Asia. We love Vietnam, and Thailand for their amazing cuisine.
We are frequently traveling, so we are sorry that we don't get to meet all our guests, but we leave you in the hands of an amazing staff and manager, Eko and Sakming, who will be your contact people.
