Step back in time and stay in the medieval Borne quarter of Barcelona. A thriving neighborhood filled with cobblestone pedestrian streets, charming bars and cafes with the outdoor tables that fill up even throughout the mild winter season. Just outside the door is the beautiful 14th century gothic church, Santa Maria Del Mar. Venture further on and get lost in the labyrinth of ancient winding streets filled with charming boutiques, hidden cafes and the famous Picasso museum. Or, take a stroll down the treelined Passeig Del Born, once the jousting area of Barcelona. Walk 5. min more and you are in the palmed filled Park Ciutadella. 15 minutes walk in other direction and you are on the shore of the Mediterranean sea. Transport further afield is made easy with a Metro station and bus stop less than 5 min walk from the door. There is also the central Train stations (Estació de França) practically at the doorstep of the flat.

The larger of the bedrooms has an attached private bathroom (shower/toilet) and is a combined 25m2 (82sq ft) in a beautifully recently renovated 110m2 (395sq.ft) apartment.
The second room is smaller but has ample natural light and two glass doors opening onto balconies.

Matthew's apartment was excellent: just as shown in the pictures and a fabulous location. Matthew was also super helpful with recommendations, even beyond the usual restaurant recommendations and such. For instance, we got the flu while in town, and he was great about pointing us to doctors and giving advice on the medical system. I would add only one thought to Matthew's description of the place: The apartment, located on narrow streets, is not super bright. That's not a criticism since not many flats in the old city are--just a heads up in case having a lot of light is important. Overall a great find. We'd gladly stay here again.
I would thoroughly recommend this flat - it was even better than in the photos - comfortable, spacious & tidy. As an added bonus, Matthew's art on the walls is amazing.
Matthew was an excellent and welcoming host, and left great recommendations for drinking/dining out. The location was amazing - i think the in best area in Barcelona - and when Matthew says something is only 5 minutes walk away, it really is!
The beds were very comfortable, but be aware the bed in the second bedroom is a sofa bed - it was comfortable with 1 person in it, but probably wouldn't be so good for a couple. If you had mobility issues the stairs would be tricky, but we found them no problem at all.
We loved Barcelona, and staying in this lovely flat certainly contributed to our enjoyment - thanks Matthew!
We had a great week in Barcelona thanks in large part to the location of this apartment. If you don't know Barcelona (which we didn't before) El Borne is one of the places to be with lots of bars and restaurants about and close to many of the main attractions.
The apartment is large and airy, pretty much as shown in the photos. The main bedroom is en-suite with a comfortable bed. The second bedroom has a sofa bed, which was OK for my adult daughter but may not be ideal for a couple so I'd go for the air mattress Matthew suggests.
As Matthew mentions, the apartment is on the forth floor and the stairs are narrow and steep. While this will only really present a problem if you have large luggage, you do get fitter after climbing them for a week.
Matthew is a helpful responsive host who resolved a couple of minor issues quickly. I have no problems recommending a stay in his apartment.
Stayed for two weeks in Barcelona and selected Matthew's pad, we rented the whole place for those two weeks.
I wish we had more time to interact with Matthew as I was hoping to get some of the great experiences the others have written about, but we only got to see him for less than 20 mins. Before arrival he does email you quite a few times and sends a very detailed email about how to get there and what to watch out for. The few minutes we actually spent with him were great. He seems like a very genuine and easy going guy, explained as much as he could about how things work in the apt and that was very very much welcomed. His explanations were so good, we had no need to call him once while we were there.
So, I can not say much more about Matthew, but from the few minutes we spoke/saw him they were all a positive experience.
As said before on every single review: LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. The location is fantastic, very close to the beach and close to the "shopping' area and to la rambla. It has a lot of cafes nearby, tons of bars ( Barcelona is packed full of bars ), museums and next door to a Gothic church ( Sta Maria del Mar ) built in the 14 century or something. Like he describes it, once you are there you feel as if u were left behind in time... It is a nice size apartment. The rooms are adequate size with a big living/kitchen area. Both bathrooms are very nice and large. He also has a washer in the apt that will save your life. He gave us the flat in perfectly clean condition and he does have some nice little touches, in our case some fruit and wine. A thing that nobody has mentioned here is that most if not all the artwork in the apt was done by him and that goes perfect with the whole ambiance of El Born which is full of studios.
The stairs. Matthew had mentioned them and I did tell him it would be ok, and they got me in shape. Based on the listing I expected the whole apt to have AC but it only has AC in the main room and It does not work well and having AC was very important for me.
I would rent from him again!
Super nice & spacious apartment. Matthew is an awesome host! Matthew was very thoughtful, helpful and considerate—down to the details of how to best travel to the apartment, helping us, and meeting us. Matthew was excellent and quick in all communication. He recommended restaurants we really enjoyed. Thanks Matthew. We loved this apartment, excellent location and more than plenty of room for my husband and five-year-old daughter—really nice place.
Matthew's apartment was the perfect spot for a break in Barcelona. The location was perfect - just a few minutes' walk to two metro stops, and in the heart of the bustling El Born neighbourhood, full of bars, restaurants and quirky shops. Both rooms were spacious, and two bathrooms were another bonus. The apartment was spotless, with all mod cons and Matthew provided guide books, maps, a computer printer and a library of books. He was quick to reply to any communication and took time to offer loads of advice when we arrived. He also arranged for us to stay another two days at the apartment, at short notice (at the weekend) when we sent an email, because we didn't want to leave the flat and check into a hotel.
All in all, I would wholly recommend Matthew as a host.
