Alright: I live in this apartment in Manhattan, with one room available most of the year. I am a full time composer, the room was used as a recording studio, but now I spend most of my time at the grand piano, in the other room. It has a nice convertible couch that turns into a very comfortable bed for two. Though I prefer single guests, if you are a really cool couple, we can probably handle it.
It's a private room, we would share bathroom and kitchen. Of course: internet available, clean sheets, towels, lots of tea and random vegetarian food that I am happy to share. :)
It's a block from Central Park, we can see it from all windows. Fire escape and lots of direct sunlight all through the Winter months. This is the new cool area in Manhattan, with lots of young people and random celebrities.
15 minutes to 42nd St. on the express 2/3 trains, also close to the local B/C trains. Minutes from Central Park West and 5th Avenue, the museum mile could keep one entertained for a lifetime, M4 bus at the corner will take you to all of the museums along the Park.
Great location, restaurants, banks, bars, cafes, theaters, nightlife, jazz-clubs, Columbia University campus, Harlem tourist spots. The biggest cathedral in NY, beautiful St John the divine, just three blocks away.
I do love this place and It is always nice to share it with cool people. Depending on how busy I am it's always fun to take guests around to see some cool places in the city.
Although it may not be an ideal fit for everyone, it's definitely a fun and comfortable room; with a silent AC for the summer days and super quiet to sleep at night even with the open windows. I have made some great friends through airbnb. If you are into any kind of music, there's always something great to check in the city and talk about.
No drinks on piano. No smoking. You can smoke in the fire-escape or on the stairways.
You are welcome to use the kitchen, cook and eat. Basic common sense rules apply, like: if you drink something from the fridge, be my guest, if you a lot of something, then you should refill the supply. :)
Cleaning fee will be charged if necessary.
The guest room was originally set up as a recording studio, which is rarely used these days. The advantage is that you get a nice desk with a powerful desktop computer that you may use if you need, you get ample space in the closet for your suitcase and whisper quiet AC. If I ever have a recording job I try not to book guests at the same time. In the rare eventuality that I need to do a last minute recording while a guest is already here then we'll either make arrangements for me to work while you are out exploring NY, or I'll lend you my bed with fresh clean sheets and all that.
This is not a business for me, it's a way to use the space, meet interesting people and make some cash to help me spend more time composing. So, I tend to attract people who like the idea of taking part in the life of a composer in NY. I don't think this is an ideal place for everyone, but it can be a great place for someone with similar interests. I have been very lucky with every single person that stayed here and I often find myself having awesome conversations with the guests. :)
