About this listing
Garden Cottage is self-contained and located within our established woodland garden in the small rural township of Stanley, north east Victoria. This is quite simply a glorious spot - calm, quiet and yet just 10 minutes from historic Beechworth. One guest said it was 'head clearing' space which can't be bad! The cottage has a queen-sized bed and lovely crisp, cotton sheets.
Set in an established woodland garden containing many rare and interesting plants, many people enjoy a wander in the grounds or further out into the chestnut orchard/woodland.
We find that many people want to stay simply to wind down, watch the birdlife, go for long walks, read or maybe even write that novel (and we do have writers who come to stay for lengthy periods).
Beechworth offers extensive shopping - as well as all the basics - and the selection of food and places to eat is impressive. This region is one of the most highly respected by gourmet travellers and day trips out into the wineries and beyond are always inspiring.
Day trips can also include travelling up into the Alps, walking in the mountains and really experiencing just what this north eastern landscape has to offer.
We endeavour to be as environmentally responsible as we can and recently we were delighted to be short-listed in the (website hidden) Tourism Awards Eco-Friedly category - not bad for a little country cottage.
You have all of the technology you can possibly need, new TV/DVD, a great kitchen and even a washing machine for the longer stays. And, apparently, one of the most comfortable sofas around...please feel free to contact us if we can help at all.
In addition, as from December 2014, we welcome you to use our new swimming pool - yes, we are excited too!!
As an accredited cycle friendly business and as cyclists, we can offer extensive local knowledge, suggestions and information for your cycling holiday.
We can also offer drop off and pick up with bikes for a fee.
Please feel free to ask.
Please note that we do charge $180 for a one night weekly stay and $200 for a one night weekend stay. Please feel free to ask us about that. Thank you - do come and see (website hidden)
Guests are welcome to wander in the garden and walk further out into the chestnut orchard and establishing woodland.
Obviously too guests are most welcome to use the new swimming pool (as from December 2014...!).
We had a wonderful overnight stay at the Garden Cottage. So peaceful, warm on a chilly night and super comfy bed. All the homemade jams available to buy had my husband salivating and buying up big - so delicious thank Jenny. Totally recommend if you love the country, walking, cycling or just relaxing in the lovely cottage. The local Stanley pub was highly recommended for dinner but not open on the night we were there.
We had a very relaxing weekend in Garden Cottage. It was very warm and equipped for all our needs. The cottage felt very private, set at the back of the main house and surrounded by the beautiful garden. Stanley is a very small town only a short drive from Beechworth however it has a welcoming local pub which serves great food. We look forward to returning in the spring or summer to see the garden in bloom. Thankyou Jenny for your attentive communication and the fresh eggs!
My partner and I had a wonderful time staying at Garden Cottage. Jenny was a fantastic host - very friendly and helpful, but also generous giving us our space. The cottage is a beautiful, very cosy and inviting space and the surrounding gardens are lovely. We really appreciated the care taken in making our stay comfortable, from the milk, biscuits and fresh eggs left for us, to the beautiful linen, handmade soap and cloth shopping bags. We would definitely like to stay here again next time we're in the region.
Jenny was a very accomodating and friendly host. The cottage is lovely: Quiet, homey, well appointed, clean, beautiful gardens, comfy bed and a thoroughly great place to relax and 'get off the grid'.
We had a great time in Beechworth, a good feed at the very friendly Stanley Pub and did a few foodie oriented road trips though Milawa and King Valley. In all, a terrific weekend away. Thanks Jenny!

It's a great place and area to stay in. we will be back in spring when the trees are in bloom.
The Garden Cottage was really warm and welcoming place and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Stanley. Jenny was a wonderful host and communication was clear and easy. Loved the garden around the cottage that was bursting with fruit. Ended buying jam and soap that Jenny made and stocked in the cottage. The fresh laid eggs in the fridge were a nice little touch.
This was one of those pleasant experiences where the reality exceeds expectations. Garden Cottage is just glorious!
I am sorry that you felt we were a little unfriendly. It was very difficult trying to explain and clarify your visit - many emails and I felt that you didn't realize just how far away we were so arriving late and tired didn't help any of us. The situation with airbnb and any changes in payment is something I have never had to deal with previously so I was genuinely unable to help with that.
About the Host, Jenny
After many years overseas, we've been here 25 years now sustained by ongoing environmental work and interests both within the property and beyond - and also, of course, by the beautiful environment of Stanley and the north east!
So, what's important to me... my family, my dogs, friends, the garden, our trees and and all in this wonderful bit of the world.
