About This Listing
Our bright, charming, very clean, studio cottage comfortably sleeps four and is an eco-friendly vacation rental. Surrounded by manicured tropical gardens, on the pristine Kalapana-Kapoho coastline, we offer a truly authentic Hawaii experience.
The island style kitchen has a full size refrigerator, double sink, four burner cook-top, and everything you need to prepare a nice meal. It is a culinary paradise!
The Palms Cottage is a spacious and airy 600 square foot stand-alone studio cottage. It has an open floor plan with tropical island décor throughout. The rattan and bamboo furnishings, warm wood, and Hawaiian print fabrics offer a true taste of island living.
The cottage provides tropical flowers, a hand towel, paper towels, dish soap and a new sponge in the kitchen. Freshly laundered linens on the beds. Clean bath towels, wash cloths, a bath mat and hand soap in the bathroom. As well as beach towels and a day cooler with blue ice for your outings.
The Palms Cottage was named after the beautifully hand sculpted palm tree bas-relief that decorates the wall of the studio. The cottage sleeps four guests in two very comfortable queen beds. The beds are topped with Tommy Bahama designer quilts and are separated by a nightstand with two reading lamps. There is a large hand-tufted tropical rug at the foot, and a rich wicker armoire that houses the 30” flat-screen/DVD player with basic satellite TV on the far wall. With padded benches, a wicker lounge chair, bamboo shelving, and a small closet, there is plenty of space to unpack and relax.
The kitchen features a full size refrigerator, double sink, four-burner gas cook-top, and is complete with pots/pans, dishware, and cutlery. It has everything you need to prepare a nice meal in your hale (home) away from home, including an outdoor BBQ for your grilling pleasure.
The private bathroom has a shower, toilet, pedestal sink and colorful hand-carved Bali mirror.
French doors open up to the breezy screened lanai (sunroom) with panoramic garden views. You can hear the waves in the distance as you relax on the 8’ tropical print couch reading your favorite book. The lovely wicker dining set is the perfect place to relax and enjoy your coffee in the morning, and a nice meal with a glass of wine after an adventure filled day.
Our lovely Palms Cottage is fully solar powered and built to peacefully co-exist with its natural surroundings.
Offstreet parking and private cottage.
Interaction with Guests
We want you to have the best experience possible. We enjoy meeting our guests and make it a point to introduce ourselves early in your visit, then we leave the amount of interaction up to you. We are available for local recommendations or any other needs you might have during your stay. Our residence is on the property, distanced and obscured by tropical gardens and large fruit trees.
Our 6 acre property is secluded, peaceful, and relaxing. Situated on the pristine Kalapana coastline between Kehena and the Kapoho, removed from the hussle of tourism, it truly feels like untouched paradise. It is an idyllic getaway for honeymooners and adventurers alike.
We recommend taking a stroll to the beautiful coastal bay across the street. Kalani Oceanside Retreat is 1/3 mile, and Kehena Black Sand Beach is 1 mile. A short drive in either direction will take you to thermal ponds at Ahalanui Park and Isaac Hale Park, where you can soak the day away, the Kapoho Tidepools, where you will find the best snorkeling on the island, and new black sand beaches in Kalapana where you can explore the new volcanic coastline.
Come for the adventure, stay for a relaxing get away from it all!
Public transportation is limited on the Big Island. We highly recommend renting a car so you can fully explore all that the island has to offer.
The cottage is pet and smoke free.
Great place...so close to the black sand beaches!
The garden cottage was tranquil, clean, and unique. The 20 minutes’ drive from Pahao is a wonderful experience in a rainforest park.
Nora is a warm and gracious host. The cottage was very nice and clean. All decorations represent island’s culture: very charming and exotic.
We rented snorkel gears and beach chair from Nora. Kapoho Tide pools have so many different tropical fishes and so less people! The only problem is that the beach has no facilities and parking is 500m away! Another place we went is Ahalanui Park. It is like a huge hot tub with beautiful tropical fishes! Extremely recommended for new snorkeler.
Nora's Palms Cottage was a delight. Although this picture is totally accurate, you can't get the full charming effect from a photo. All of the furniture was really comfortable, and the kitchen and bathroom were perfect.
The lanai was a special place to relax, read, dine or just sit in the serenity.
The grounds were magnificent--planted with palm trees and various tropical flowers and fruit. It was a fabulous place to explore, or to just sit at the cottage and gaze out.
The local Kehena Beach area was lovely, with a photogenic bay just across the road with waves crashing against the lava rocks. All of the local roads were easily navigated and pretty besides.
The house is very eco friendly. My dad got very excited about it when he saw the solar panel and all the equipment, so we look around, hope we didn't disturb anyone. The house should be easy to find, but I forget to check airbnb for description, so I woundered around for a while. Nora was nice, I asked her about where to see the turtle and snorkeling, and I saw lots of turtle there. The place is really quiet, the only thing we can here is bird singing, and we slept very well here.
No surprises staying here. Nora's description and photos are very accurate and she is a lovely host. The property is peaceful and beautiful - frogs chirping, palms swaying and a cool breeze off the lanai. Everything was clean and comfortable and tasteful - loved the palm tree dishes. Make sure to visit the Ahulani warm pools at high tide on a full moon. : )
Had a wonderful time at Bamboo Cottage. Checkin was a breeze - Nora provided very clear directions and the key was in the door as promised when we arrived right on 3pm. The cottage is airy, well furnished, perfectly clean and well equipped with all the linens, towels and kitchen equipment needed for a 3 night stay. The bed was comfortable and we slept so well, lulled by the sounds of birds, insects, and geckos. Really light sleepers might want to bring ear plugs. The screened lanai is a wonderful spot to eat breakfast or take a nap on the comfortable couch :-) The WiFi worked fine in the house - but there's almost no cell signal in most of the surrounding area - so plan accordingly if you need to co-ordinate with others.
Nora stopped by on the first afternoon and was so friendly and helpful with information on things to do and how to get there. Make use of the many guidebooks and maps provided (but put them back where you found them!).
Be aware this area is isolated - you can walk half a mile to a small resort for very basic snacks (like ice cream and chips), but you'll want to stock up with food and beverages in Pahoa or Hilo on your way to the cottage. Pahoa has the only restaurants/coffee/stores (and it's not a very interesting town, in my assessment!). A car is essential for driving to the beaches and snorkeling spots.
In summary, this is a lovely place to really wind down and enjoy the beauty of the area. Thanks Nora.
Nora is a great hostess: responsive and responsible. The cottage was very nice, clean, and charming, and the grounds and general area are very beautiful and peaceful. Great place to retreat and get away from it all!
Only negatives might be that it is remote and a long drive to anywhere else on the island, and, although the ocean is very close, beautiful, and walkable, there are no beaches close by to swim at.
I'm home, my pile of vacation laundry is in the wash, and gifts have been given. On reflection I can only give the highest praise regarding this cottage, the setting, the amenities, and the hostess. Nora was prompt with all communication, generous with her time and Aloha when we were visiting, and thoughtful with every detail. There is even a sewing kit in the bedside table drawer, just when I needed to replace a button! From the quiet well cared for property to the comfortable furnishings and fully equipped kitchen, we had everything we needed in our beautiful, simple, low footprint yet plush and cozy cottage. The price is very reasonable for the spacious studio house with kitchen (no oven, but there is fridge, stove, coffee maker, blender, etc) full bathroom, and screened lanai with dining set and comfy davenport. It's off the beaten path, ensuring quiet and serenity yet town is less than 10 miles away. The ocean is in view, and we walked to the rocky lava coast in just a few minutes. So happy to have found this gem.
