The Palms Cottage is nestled off the southeastern coast of the Big Island of Hawaii and is an excellent choice for sustainable accommodation. It is one of 3 buildings on the Lava Lane Cottage property, set back against the trees, and built to peacefully coexist with it’s tropical setting. It is almost exclusively solar powered and has a simple, open design that makes the cottage feel spacious and cool in the tropical trade winds.
The Palms Cottage is a 600 square foot stand alone studio with two queen beds. French doors open out to a screened sunroom with an 8’ couch and dining table. Palm Cottage got its name from the beautifully hand sculpted palm tree bas relief that decorates the wall above the beds.
The cottage has a full kitchen with everything you need to prepare meals, including a four burner cooktop, and stand up gas BBQ for your grilling pleasure. It also has beach towels and a small cooler with blue ice for your outings.
Our 6 acre property is very quiet and private in a lush tropical landscaped setting, about 200 yds. back from the ocean. You can hear the waves in the distance as you read your favorite book in the breezy sunroom. Of course if you would prefer to watch a movie or post vacation photos the cottage has Satellite TV/DVD and WiFi access.
We recommend taking a short stroll in the mornings to the beautiful coastal bay across the street. Kalani Oceanside Retreat is 1 mi, and Kehena, the closest beach, is 1.5 miles. A short drive in either direction will take you to thermal ponds, coastal tidepools, black sand beaches and a once in a lifetime adventure lava hike. Come and stay for a relaxing get away from it all.
We require a $100 refundable security deposit, held and returned at the time of check out if nothing is damaged. After confirmation, we will send you an email with our address and directions.

Palms Cottage is a wonderful place to stay in big island. On the south of island, where you could experience rain forest and beautiful ocean at the same time. My family and I enjoy to stay there very much. Room and kitchen were very clean and neat. The dinning room is on the balcony, so we have our breakfast surrounding with forest. Every night there was a choir of song birds singing. One time we even met a ground of wild pigs walking around. Heated ocean by volcano is only 15 mins drive and a lot of fish live there. You could soak there or snorkel diving. It was one of spectacular experience we had.
Thanks for the directions sent with the confirmation, we had no problem finding the cottage. The street sign was easy to find if you drive slow after passing the Kalani Oceanside Retreat with big signs.
The drive on the coastline (Route 137) was so nice, the contrast with black lava and the emerald green sea was amazing. Then, as soon as we are on the driveway to the cottage with fruits trees and tropical plants, we felt like we were in the garden of Eden! It wasn't the best season for picking fruits but we found a ripe orange and a lemon. They were so juicy and so flavorful!
The cottage was spacious and the sun room was perfect for dining & just relaxing. We had everything we needed in the kitchen to cook.
We really regret we didn't have enough time to explore the area... there are so many things to do within 30 mins of driving. We only had 2 full days in Big Island, so didn't have time to just sit & relax at the cottage. I strongly recommend you to reserve at least a full day with no plans to go on tour or anything, so you can relax and explore nearby area. 2 full days to spend this area should be much better!
We managed to enjoy a couple of warm pools and other recommended sites on their website. We went to see the sunrise at Sam's bay, right across the street from the cottage, on the day we left. We were few minutes late to see the sun just risen, but it was so amazingly beautiful. We also saw some turtles and... a whale or two! We wanted to stay there watching them for an hour or two, but no time... We rushed to the airport to catch our flight back to cold & cloudy Seattle with regrets... wished we had few more days to spend there!
However, it was most memorable stay in Hawaii for us.
We'll definitely come back to stay here with better plans, reserve at least a couple of days to explore nearby the cottage, go to bed early and wake up before the sunrise, stock up the food to cook (BBQ should be nice) and make lunch to take with us for adventures!
Wifi and cell reception were not reliable, the cell reception was very limited, specially when it's windy. However, it was nice not to have cell reception so our bad habit of wasting time checking SNS sites and etc. It was very helpful to have the guidebooks and road maps provided in the cottage. There are many streets/roads and interesting places in the rural area that are not on (website hidden) map.
Thank you so much again & mahalo dear Nora for your wonderful cozy lovely cottage in a beautiful paradise "Garden Eden" property! It was a perfect beginning of the new year 2014 when we arrived in Noras place and we immediately felt like home:)! Preparing food in the fully equipped kitchen (only a toaster was missing for the breakfast bread) and then sitting with a glass of wine in my favorite place the mosquito protected winter garden was the perfect relaxing end of a every Big Island tour day! Accompanied and surrounded by the "jungle" noise of the coqui fogs ( i really loved them...:() ) and quietly grunting wild boars ;)!! In the garden you also could get fresh coconuts from the trees - wonderful:)! And we also appreciate very much how they handle the nature conservation with waste separation and compost in a very useful but also cute decorated little wooden hut on the property - they also have solar panels for the power and use the rain water! That´s great! The sleeping in the two (great when you not traveling as a couple!) big beds was comfy and after "being busy" with traveling for already 3 weeks this was the perfect stay for us just to settle down a little bit and relax! We absolutely recommend the Palms Cottage!
Thank you for a wonderful review, Melanie. It is our goal to make our guests feel comfortable in the cottages during their stay. When traveling we would all like to know that the accommodation we chose is clean, has a hot shower and comfortable bed to come home to. I am so happy you had a wonderful stay.
Hilo area is the more rainy part of Big Isl. But that also means exploring great sights is easy. And you are away from the tourist traps and malls ! The Cottage is great, in a beautiful location and the host is very friendly and helpful if you'd like local tips n'input.
The perfect place to celebrate christmas! The cottage is spacious, clean and cozy and the garden is just amazing. Nora was very kind and helpful and the surrounding area is the happiest little hippie place. The only little drawback, especially because we wanted to call our family on christmas, was that the internet is not really working. But there are so many beautiful places to see closeby that you definitely don't need the internet otherwise.
A very nice cottage in beautiful surroundings in a very remote area with a short walk to a secluded bay. Make sure you have a GPS to find your way there though!
Hi Phillip, Some guests do have a hard time with directions that is why I always send my own confirmation email with precise directions and I say be sure to print them out and bring them with you. It always amazes me how many guests fail to read them then can't find their way. I am happy you enjoyed the cottage, they are quite charming. Thank you for staying at Lava Lane Cottages.
Very comfortable and convenient place close to the beach and at the same very private and quiet - just perfect location! Nora was very welcoming and advised us tons of places to visit on the island as well as useful tips. We stayed in this "paradise" for 4 days and are very happy with it.
The cottage is beautiful. Very quiet, the place is perfect. We loved it. The only thing was the hot water... But we definetely recommend the cottage!
This is one of the most beautiful places on earth! The cottage is surrounded by a beautiful garden with fresh fruits to pick, the beds are excellent, there's everything you need in the kitchen and bathroom. There's even a dvd and a roadmap of Hawaii. We really enjoyed staying here.
