The Space

Aloha!

The Bamboo Cottage is nestled off the southeastern coast of the Big Island of Hawaii and is an excellent choice for sustainable accommodation. It is one of 3 buildings on the Lava Lane Cottage property, set back against the trees, and built to peacefully coexist with it’s tropical setting. It is almost exclusively solar powered and has a simple, open design that makes the cottage feel spacious and cool in the tropical trade winds.

The Bamboo Cottage is a 650 square foot stand alone 1 bedroom cottage. It has a queen sleigh bed in the bedroom, a queen sofa in the lounge, and French doors that open to a screened sunroom with a twin day bed and dining table. Bamboo Cottage got its name from the beautifully hand sculpted bamboo bas relief that decorates the walls of the sunroom.

The cottage has a full kitchen with everything you need to prepare meals, including a four burner cooktop, oven, and stand up gas BBQ for your grilling pleasure. It also has beach towels and a small cooler with blue ice for your outings.

Our 6 acre property is very quiet and private in a lush tropical landscaped setting, about 200 yds. back from the ocean. You can hear the waves in the distance as you read your favorite book in the breezy sunroom. Of course if you would prefer to watch a movie or post vacation photos the cottage has Satellite TV/DVD and WiFi access.

We recommend taking a short stroll in the mornings to the beautiful coastal bay across the street. Kalani Oceanside Retreat is 1 mi, and Kehena Beach is 1.5 miles. A short drive in either direction will take you to thermal ponds, coastal tidepools, black sand beaches and a once in a lifetime adventure lava hike. Come and stay for a relaxing get away from it all.

We require a $100 security/damage deposit returned at the time of check out. If you have any questions regarding the security deposit please do not hesitate to write. After reservation acceptance, we will send you a confirmation email with address details and directions.

  • Nora and Michael were really cool hosts. Very friendly and helpful. Our personal highlight: Nora showed us how to open our first self-picked coconut. ;-)
Their property is simply amazing! When we arrived we felt like in paradise. The Bamboo Cottage itself provides everything you need in an stunningly beautiful environment. We highly recommend this place to every potential Big Island visitor.

  • We realy enjoyed the Bamboo Cottage in Pahoa. In the park like garden we felt like a paradise in paradisw. The only sounds we are listen were the sounds of nature. The cottage was very confortable and cosy. Michael gave us a quick help as we were not familiar with us electric standards. Nora showed us the beauty of the fascinating shoreline close to the park. We saw a lot of green sea turtles and more.
We had a wonderfull time unless a few rainy days.

  • We spent 8 days at the Bamboo Cottage, we loved it. There is so much to see that is close to it, and several sites within walking distance, or a short drive away. Kalena black beach, Champagne Pond, Akaka Falls, Rainbow Falls, Kelani retreat, too many to mention. Staying at the cottage offered a daily restful retreat after getting out and seeing and experiencing the area. We played hard each day, and coming "home" to the cottage at the end of a day was so very nice! It is clean, comfy, and we loved hearing the frogs in the evening. It is secluded, on lovely manicured grounds. Mornings were so beautiful with the sun coming up and birds singing. Evenings we walked all over the place even watching whales from a pull out on the road close to the house. Mike and Nora answered any questions regarding activities and ways to get there from the cottage. They were a great help! They did not intrude, but rather were there if we had any needs. In short, perfect hosts. I would recommend this place to anyone without hesitation!

  • We had a wonderful stay there and we were best informed by Michael about all things to do we asked for. The guesthouse within a wonderful garden landscape had equipment we needed. Thank you Michael for your friendly help and hospitality. We would come again if we would plan another trip to Big Island.

  • The Bamboo Cottage was a DREAM HOME! Nothing less than perfect and paradise. Nora was a kind, thoughtful, gracious host and the cottage is well equipped with all the bells and whistles. Complete kitchen for cooking meals, spacious beautiful bathroom, hot water, the bed was incredibly comfortable. Having a good bed is key and this was luxury! Its actually more beautiful than the pictures represent (which is hard to believe as the pictures are lovely). I had and felt complete privacy and it was great knowing Nora and Michael were available if needed. I based myself out of the cottage and explored the entire island, always grateful to be coming 'home' to the lava lane cottages each evening. The area itself is heaven. I am a world traveller and it seems to be one of the last great remote, untouched, non-developeded areas on earth! I hope the Puna region of the big island remains this way! Close to shops, conveniences in Kalapana and Pahoa, easy drive from Hilo. Everything within reach. Kalani Retreat Center is walking distance and a day pass can be purchased to use the pool and spa amenities, or class passes for workshops, excellent yoga etc. I enjoyed the thermal pools and hidden beaches just down the road from the cottages. It was very hard to leave and I will absolutely be back to the lava lane cottages again soon! Truly was a dream home!

  • Beautiful Cottage on a Beautiful property. Cottage was very clean and well equipped. Close to some interesting sites not found else where on the Big Island.

The hosts were quickly responsive to communications and some needs.

Sorry we did not have more time just to relax and enjoy Lava Lane"s Bamboo Cottage.

  • Nora's cottages are awesome. They are high end and very clean and feel like an exotic second home. You need to be comfortable with the solitude and you need to be willing to drive for some food but the fruits on the premises won't let you starve. It is a magical experience you won't regret.
Nora is very warm and shares her knowledge of the area willingly. I would love to go again and send my friends too.

  • We had a wonderful stay at the lovely and just perfect Bamboo Cottage. It's located in a beautiful lush green area with birdsong and fruittrees. At evening or in the morning you can sit quitly in de veranda and relax. Nora and Michael are very nice and friendly, and Nora gave us good advises about things to visit, there also are some good books on Big Island in the cottage too.
After leaving the cottage we stayed two nights in Kona, and oh, how we missed our cottage, so quit and peacefull. Looking for a beautiful accomodation and do you love nature? than we recommand this cottage!

  • The bamboo cottage stay was indeed a wonderful experience--being in the lush forest with the sound of the waves crashing nearby. It is quite the drive from Hilo airport, definitely off the beaten track, but worth it if you have the time. The cottage was exceptionally neat and clean, well organized, with everything you would need, including cookware. Nora was kind to stop by, chat with us and gave us useful tips. Amazing that they run a self-sustained place. Would love to come back some day!

Absolutes +++++
