About This Listing
Our bright, charming, very clean, one-bedroom cottage comfortably sleeps five and is an eco-friendly vacation rental. Surrounded by manicured tropical gardens, on the pristine Kalapana-Kapoho coastline, it offers a truly authentic Hawaii experience.
The Bamboo Cottage was named after the beautifully hand sculpted bamboo bas-relief that decorate the walls of the screened lanai
The Bamboo Cottage is a spacious and airy 650 square foot stand-alone one-bedroom cottage. It has an open floor plan, large windows, and tropical island décor throughout. The rattan and bamboo furnishings, warm wood, and Hawaiian print fabrics offer a true taste of island living.
It comfortably sleeps five with a queen sleigh bed in the bedroom, a queen sofa bed in the lounge, and French doors that open to a screened lanai (sunroom) with a punee (twin day bed).
The cottage provides tropical flowers, a hand towel, paper towels, dish soap and a new sponge in the kitchen. Freshly laundered linens on the beds. Clean bath towels, wash cloths, a bath mat and hand soap in the bathroom. As well as beach towels and a day cooler with blue ice for your outings.
The kitchen features pendant lighting over granite tiled countertops, a full size refrigerator, double sink, four-burner gas cook-top and oven. The kitchen is complete with pots/pans, dishware and cutlery. It has everything you need to prepare a nice meal in your hale (home) away from home, including an outdoor BBQ for your grilling pleasure.
You’ll sink into the oversized Tommy Bahama designer furniture that welcomes you into the lounge, elegantly complimented by wicker and wood accent tables. A bamboo cabinet with receding doors houses the 30” flat-screen/DVD player with basic satellite TV on the far wall, and large windows look out to the manicured landscape.
You’ll find a very comfortable queen sleigh bed in the bedroom, paired with a nightstand and lamp on either side. The generous closet and built-in shelving provide plenty of space to unpack. A large oval mirror decorates the bedroom’s back door and opens up to the private bamboo-partitioned outdoor shower.
The private bathroom is spacious with an ample glass shower, toilet, pedestal sink, large mirror, and plenty of bamboo shelving. As noted above, there is a second (outdoor) shower that is great for rinsing off after a fun day at the beach to prevent tracking sand into the cottage.
The Bamboo Cottage was named after the beautifully hand sculpted bamboo bas-relief that decorate the walls of the screened lanai. Your view is swaying coconut trees over a partial ocean view, and you can hear the waves in the distance as you relax on the punee (day bed) reading your favorite book. The dining table in the lanai is the perfect place to relax and enjoy your coffee in the morning, and a nice meal with a glass of wine after an adventure filled day.
The cottage is wheelchair accessible by a cement ramp, it has three-foot doorways that are threshold free, and a large private outdoor shower with hot water, all wheelchair friendly.
Our lovely Bamboo Cottage is fully solar powered and built to peacefully co-exist with its natural surroundings.
Off-street parking and private cottage. Please do not roam into our "off limits" area where we store tools and our machinery.
Interaction with Guests
We want you to have the best experience possible. We enjoy meeting our guests and make it a point to introduce ourselves early in your visit, then we leave the amount of interaction up to you. We are available for local recommendations or any other needs you might have during your stay. Our residence is on the property, distanced and obscured by tropical gardens and large fruit trees.
Our 6 acre property is secluded, peaceful, and relaxing. Situated on the pristine Kalapana coastline between Kehena and the Kapoho, removed from the hussle of tourism, it truly feels like untouched paradise. It is an idyllic getaway for honeymooners and adventurers alike.
We recommend taking a stroll to the beautiful coastal bay across the street. Kalani Oceanside Retreat is 1/3 mile, and Kehena Black Sand Beach is 1 mile. A short drive in either direction will take you to thermal ponds at Ahalanui Park and Isaac Hale Park, where you can soak the day away, the Kapoho Tidepools, where you will find the best snorkeling on the island, and new black sand beaches in Kalapana where you can explore the new volcanic coastline.
Come for the adventure, stay for a relaxing get away from it all!
Public transportation is limited on the Big Island. We highly recommend renting a car so you can fully explore all that the island has to offer.
Other Things to Note
We recommend guests pick up food/beverages on the way out to the cottage. Pahoa has Island Naturals or Malama Market. We have a new UV water purification system. Directions are on your Airbnb itinerary, please print them or jot them down, cell phones can be unreliable.
The cottage is pet and smoke free, please smoke outside.
We have two cottages and most times they are both occupied. Please be considerate of the other guests by not talking loud and if you arrive late, quietly enter your cottage.
The bedroom has a very comfortable queen sleigh bed, large windows, and an ample closet
Nora was very welcoming and the house was exactly as described except for a few issues: 1. There were plenty of bugs in all rooms of the cottage 2. We lost both electrical power and water one night and it was difficult to get in touch with our host without cellphone service. Also, the water issue was not resolved for about 24 hours because it was Father's Day. The electrical issue was never resolved in the kitchen so we plugged our fridge into the bedroom and had to jump over a wire every time we used the bathroom. Also, we had to light the stove with a match every time because there was no electricity. This was inconvenient because we had just put $150 worth of groceries in the fridge. None of the cable channels worked so don't plan on watching TV. Besides, those issues, the cottage was beautiful and clean. The location was rather remote but still close enough to great sites and dark enough to see stars comparable to the top of Mauna Kea. Definitely bring bug spray!!
It was unfortunate that the water pump went out late Sunday, Fathers Day. Our plumber came early Monday morning. After I picked up a new pump in Hilo we were back up and running by early afternoon. I am very sorry for this unfortunate timing and inconvenience. I did get your call @ 10:30pm but there was nothing I could do to resolve the issue at that hour. Thank you for letting me know the satellite company needs to reset the system, I will call today.
Thank you for your understanding.
The house was absolutely beautiful, our favorite by far on our trip! We slept amazingly (helloooo amazing "outdoor" bed on the lanai), the area was BEAUTIFUL (close to so many awesome things), there is an OUTDOOR SHOWER, which is my idea of utopia, and Nora was kind enough to come over late one night when we had trouble figuring out the tv. Tons of bugs (ants) on the counters, so make sure you put away your food always! But hey, nature, its awesome! If you find yourself here on a wednesday evening, head down the red road to the Night Market, where the fun is turned up a notch and the neighborhood hippies gather to sell their wares. Its awesome :-) Thanks a bunch Nora!
Nora welcomed us at the front door when we arrived. The cottage looked the same as the description in the listing. Nora’s affable and helpful nature made staying at her already beautiful cottage a joy for our entire family. She was an excellent guide, giving us outstanding pointers for our short but sweet stay. Her cottage was cozy and clean. We enjoyed the symphony of a plethora of indigenous birds and frogs at night and the tropical view of lavish green by day. Its location makes it easy for us to visit several attraction places at the east side of Big Island—such as Volcanoes National Park, Hilo and its surrounding areas such as Akaka Falls, Botanic Garden… and especially it only takes 20 minutes to our favorite snorkeling place - Kapoho tide pools. I would definitely recommend her cottage for anyone who prefers a secluded and quiet place away from the crowd. Thank you Nora for being a warm, friendly, informative, and helpful host which makes our visit enjoyable and memorable.
Nora's cottage was a wonderfully calm, quiet, and secluded piece of paradise. The location is a bit removed from the bigger towns, but it offers much privacy for you to relax and just 'slow down' for a little bit. Nora was very helpful and friendly and made us feel very welcome. The cottage had everything we needed and checking in and out was a breeze.
We enjoyed our comfortable stay at Nora's Bamboo Cottage. The rental is located in a peaceful and lush garden with peekaboo view of the ocean. The lanai was a fantastic place for meals and to relax after touring the east side of the island (e.g., VNP, windward beaches).
The cottage had essentially everything needed for our stay. There was plenty of room for the two of us. The kitchen was spacious enough to prepare meals, the bedroom was comfortable and the bathroom was decent size. It was a plus that the cottage is eco-friendly (e.g., solar power, compost, water catchment).
One item to be aware of (and it is not in the control of the host) is that cell service is spotty at best in this general area. Perhaps it's just AT&T, which is our carrier.
Nora was a gracious host and responsive in our communications. We would be glad to rent this cottage again if we are in the area in the future.
I had read reviews before I booked to stay at the Bamboo Cottage and knew it was going to be a really great decision to stay there; it turned out to be even better than I had imagined - now how often does reality live up to your expectations in life? In this case it surpassed them!
As Airbnb hosts ourselves, we were really interested to see how other people run their business and we have absolutely nothing but admiration for what Nora and Michael have built with their own hands - a wonderful oasis in what is itself a tropical paradise. It is an amazingly tropical, lush area (without all the nasties), where the sound of birds and ocean waves mingle together. The cottage is clean, light and bright and super comfortable, tastefully furnished and well organized, plus so, so private on the beautiful landscaped 6 acres they share with their lucky Airbnb guests. Nora was fun to chat with, always responsive and concerned with our comfort.
A delightful visit!
