My cosy cottage is located on the famous and beautiful Beara Peninsula 16 km (or 10 miles) from Kenmare on the Wild Atlantik Way and the Ring of Beara, with breathtaking views over the Atlantic and the Knockatee Mountain in a tranquil setting.
My house is an restored traditional Irish cottage with all its charm. It is located in a peaceful setting on a quiet road, fully detached.
I am renting a pull out coach, which converts into a comfortable (!!) 1.60 m x 2 m bed in my homely and cosy living room, which sleeps two people. It is a self-contained room to give you privacy during your stay.
I cater for people with a gluten- and wheat free diet!
I offer a continental style breakfast or full Irish breakfast with tea, herbal teas or fresh coffee, which will be served between 8.00 & 9.30 am. If you need to leave earlier, no problem it can be arranged.
I love to cook, having had a bakery and a Cafe for nine years, so I am offering dinner at an extra charge, where I cater for special food requirements, like gluten free and wheat free food, as well.
You are very welcome to use the kitchen for making a cup of tea or a coffee.
The house has oil heating and in the cooler evenings we just light the fire to make you feel comfortable.
The internet access can be very poor, there is no WiFi in house, because the house is located in a more rural area, which has its own charm.
Towels, sheets, hairdryer are provided.
I am a very artistic person, the house reflects this in lots of detail, which makes the house very beautiful.
There are two bathrooms (shared) in the house, one is near the living room, which is mainly used as a guest toilet. The spacious bathroom is upstairs with a walk-in shower, toilet and bath and a fabulous view over the bay.
I am happy to share my sitting room area with you, this is where I serve your breakfast as well.
If the weather is suitable you can choose to have your breakfast in my garden.
Interaction with Guests
I love to welcome people in my house, having had a Cafe for a long time, where I enjoyed to engage with my guests and make them feel very welcome.
I still have a gluten free business and will be away during the day on some days, but
I will be around on your arrival and when you are leaving.
We will have time perhaps to swap stories or exchange information about your planned journey, if you wish so. I am more than happy to give you every information you need to make it a fabulous holiday.
Kenmare, Co. Kerry, has been one of Ireland's most idyllic destinations (16 km away). Nestled peacefully at the mouth of the Kenmare Bay, a visit to Kenmare leaves lasting memories with its colourful shop fronts, unrivalled range of restaurants and stunning scenery.
Our post office and tiny grocery shop is only 10 min. walk from the house. Five minutes walk down the road you can go for a swim at the pier.
Knockadee mountain is just in front of the door, the area offers endless possibilities for hill walking, cycling (there is a bike rental just 15 min. away), fishing, golfing, horse riding, boat trips or touring the most beautiful and scenic routes.
A drive or a walk along the coast road gives you the stunning view over the Iveragh Peninsula (The Ring of Kerry).
Derreen Garden, which is only a few kilometers drive away, covers more than 60 acres of garden and has over 12km of paths which wind through mature & varied woodland to reveal wonderful views over Kilmakilloge Harbour, the Caha Mountains and the distant McGillicuddy Reeks.
The Lake House Pub is a nice evening walk away, so you can enjoy a Pint without having to drive home.
Our location is ideal for exploring the beautiful and unspoiled Beara Peninsula as well as being in a short drive on the Iveragh Peninsula with all his places of interest.
You really need a car to get around though to see the more remote places. Living in a more rural area would make it probably necessary to be independent from public transport.
There is a bus daily from Kenmare to Killarney and from Kenmare to Castletownbere, where the bus stop would be not directly in front of our door.
I would have no problem to drop you off or collect you in case you would depend on public transit.
Parking is provided in front of the house.
Kerry airport is the closest airport, 1 hour drive to Kenmare, and another 20 min. on the Castletownbere Road to the house.
Cork airport is an approx. 2 hours drive from the house.
Other Things to Note
My partner works in London, this is the reason why I love to invite people to share my lovely house.
We are dog-friendly and have no problem if your dog is house trained, the room would be probably to small, but if you have a dog bed or blanket, he can sleep in the sitting room.
There is a little cat "Dollop" member of the family. She is mostly outside, but sleeps in the house.
Smokers have to smoke outside the house.
We were welcomed right away into Manuela's home. She and her husband were very friendly and had a lot of interesting stories to tell. There was never a lack of conversation and they were very easy people to talk to.
We had decided to take the meal option and i'm glad we did. She gave us a choice between chicken and lamb and we had chosen the lamb meal as I had never eaten lamb before. It was just delicious and now I wish it was more available in the part of Canada I live in.
The room we stayed in was their living room, but it was just like a private bedroom, off to the side of the house.
And the breakfast the next morning! Yum. It was great to be able to try white pudding as we had tried black pudding earlier in Scotland.
We would go back for sure. They also gave us some good advice for our travels.
Manuela is a lovely person/host and her beautiful home is in a stunning part of Ireland (near both the Ring of Kerry and Beara Penninsula. You wouldn't pass up a chance to stay in real 1800's Irish cottage hosted by an award-winning German baker would you? We thought not. Her baking lives up to it's name. The bedroom too is beautiful, spacious and the bed super comfortable…the nicest we stayed in during our trip. The bathroom is large, contemporary and looks out over the bay. We walked to the ocean nearby and enjoyed every minute of our stay. Highly recommended 5+++
We arrived after a long drive and had some trouble finding the place, but Manuela did everything so we could get there safely :-).
We arrived and were met by Manuela who showed us around the house, which was lighted with ambient light, candles and overall was very relaxing. We were shown the room and the bathroom (yes, it really is a big bathroom with a bath in the middle - may be in the future even one with brass lions paws?).
We had read from some reviews that Manuela offered a home cooked meal, so we opted for that and were not disappointed. We had a wonderful three course meal and we were both raving about the lamb we had as mains. The desert was from Manuela's own business as a baker and was as exquisite! We spent a couple of hours eating and talking and had a real enjoyable evening with Manuela, and Dollop (the all too lovely cat of the house).
We had a great nights rest (if all pull-out couches were this comfortable :-) ). And in the morning we were greeted by Manuela and Dollop with full Irish breakfast, probably the best pudding we had in Ireland and a lot of fresh fruit which we enjoyed a lot, as well as the scones!
We took a stroll down to the pier to enjoy the view on the bay of Kenmare and were sad to leave this comfy, cosy house with Manuela and Dollop behind.
FANTASTIC experience. Manuela´s home is very cosy and personal and she is really welcoming, as well as her cat. Delicious breakfast is included, and she offers cooking dinner for a special price, that i heartly recommend. We ate, we laugh, we shared our creative matters. The scones she cooked for breakfast are simply delicious, as well as her florentines. The bed is confortable and she dedicated us the biggest bathroom i´ve ever seen. The place is wonderful and the coast charming, we went together for a short walk to the sea. One of our best experiences in AIRBNB. Totally recommended and for sure will come back. See you soon!!!!
Manuela's home is in the countryside of the Beara Peninsula just in front of the ocean. The house is beautiful.. very cozy and well furnished. The bedroom is big, the bed is very comfortable and the big bookcase, candles and a dish of cookies made us feel at home.
Manuela is a fantastic cook.. we decided to have dinner with her and she prepared a pumpkin, sweet potato and prawn soup, deer with home-made gravy served with carrots, potatoes and parsnip and a tris of home-made dessert. She also gave us Italian wine!
Hosts can use two bathrooms, on is on the ground floor next to the bedroom and the other is on the first floor which is absolutely fantastic! I loved it!
For breakfast Manuela gave us home-made bread with jams, little home-made pears and almond cakes, ham and cheese. She also gave us to sandwiches for our trip.
We recommend to stay by Manuela and to have dinner of course!
P.S. Dollop the cat is so sweet!
I don't want to leave good feedback, as I'm afraid she will be booked up forever and I'll never be able to stay with her again. That is how utterly fantastic our stay was with Manuela. Everything was so perfect and I felt at home the instant I walked in her door. We shared dinner, wine and amazing conversation. A comfortable bed, shower and breakfast all provided. I honestly can't wait to come back to Kenmare and will be sure to book with Manuela!
I am originally from Germany and in my former life I was 25 years an emergency nurse . I moved to Ireland in 2004 to set up a German Bakery, because bread was what I missed most when I came to Ireland. I sold this business in 2013 and I am now running an award winning gluten free confectionary business.
In having had a Cafe for a number of years as well, I enjoy the contact with people very much and love the hospitality business.
My passion is cooking, baking, exploring Ireland, reading, as well as being a very artistic person. I love dress making, painting and everything which turns my creative mind on.
I am looking forward to welcome you in my creative and cosy world!
