The Space

Quiet, Noe Valley neighborhood of San Francisco, fine restaurants and shops within easy walking. Handy public transportation within a walk or bus to BART for downtown.
Pictures show the garden during March, but it is glorious color during summer, and edible lettuces, chard and herbs grow there also. Internet wi-fi and dvd with video store one block away, but no TV hookup. Washing machine with clothesline drying system. Fully equipped kitchen with table near garden and comfortable sofas in small sitting room when relaxing reading, internet or watching videos.

We wish two adults and child as maximum. A third person over 18 years old costs $40 a night. One small bedroom off main room with a single bed and filled with owners books and small desk.

The apartment is on the ground floor making entry and exit very easy through the side gate and passageway. Experience sitting outside without wind or rain: that's how it is to sit in the sun room, like being in the garden. Apt is quiet being in the back of the building. the neighborhood is friendly and easy to walk in.

  • Al and Pilar were very welcoming and my mom and her sisters loved staying in their warm home. The garden is so beautiful and their garden dining room is unlike anything I've ever seen! There was a mix up on arrival time (my fault!), but Al was understanding and everything worked out. The house was quiet and walking distance from many restaurants, Whole Foods, and public transportation. My mom said that the beds were very comfortable. My parents look forward to staying here again on their future trips to San Francisco. Thanks for being great hosts, Al and Pilar!

  • Al and Pilar were most accomadating for the reservation I made for my mom when she came into town for Thanksgiving. They left the warmest welcome spread when she arrived! There's is a great space with a quiet quaintness, and the garden in the back is so relaxing. The fireplace was the best part for us, especially with the unseasonally cool temperatures at night.

  • We can't say enough about how much we enjoyed our stay. The apartment was both comfortable and intriguing. Al and his wife are art collectors and their home is spattered with interesting modern art pieces that really liven up the home. The real show-stopper is the incredible garden that is part of the apartment. The kitchen is in a sun room that juts out into the floral and edible garden. Most mornings it was hard to leave the house because you want to spend hours staring out into the beautiful garden. Al and Pilar grow vegetables, fruits, and beautiful flowers and were gracious enough to let us share in the bounty.

Al and his wife were not in town for our stay but they left us very detailed instructions before and during the trip. Al was very responsive and a wonderful communicator leading up to the trip as well.

The bed is a very comfortable queen size. There is a very strong wifi signal. They don't have cable so be prepared to use a computer for any TV watching.

Their kitchen is very unique and fun to cook in. Their spice cabinet has inspired me to revamp my current setup.

Noe Valley is one the best neighborhoods in San Francisco. We loved the strip of stores, restaurants and cafes located only a couple blocks away. And there is a whole foods in the neighborhood which is a big plus. There is even a video store if you want rent or buy dvds, which is a very cool throwback. I highly recommend the local sushi spot, Hamano Sushi. Its Yelp reviews do not do it justice. And for breakfast checkout Griddle Fresh for unique takes on American brunch fare.

  • This apartment was a good choice for us given its proximity to the Mission, the Castro, and Dolores Park (a magical playground for children). Public transportation and Whole Foods are both within walking distance.

Al and Pilar kindly left us a bottle of wine and beautiful chocolates, as well as some toys that our 3 year old enjoyed.

  • I absolutely loved Al and Pilar's garden apartment. When on the SF side, it will be hard not to compare places to this experience! The dining room was very much like sitting in a beautiful garden (while protected by all-weather glass walls). The weather was amazing, so it was possible to enjoy the garden from inside and out, but the cheer and warmth this adds to the space is remarkable. The apartment is unique, tasteful and homey - and has everything one might need. Finally - the location is wonderful. I love the mission, which is a short walk away, but so very much is a short walk away that i generally didn't need or use the car I arrived in. Planning with Al was easy and a pleasure, and there were thoughtful notes and welcome gifts. Highly recommended and hope to stay again myself!

  • This was a fantastic apartment in a good neighbourhood- close to Mission, Castro and lots of interesting bars/shops/restaurants. The apartment itself was homelike, quiet and comfortable, with a very beautiful garden. Al and Pilar were excellent hosts, leaving us some goodies and easy instructions for arriving and leaving, despite being on holiday themselves. Would recommend this to anyone wanting to stay in this area of San Francisco

  • We very much enjoyed staying at Al's and Pilar's place. It is exactely as shown on the photos, very individual, and a little bit quirky - just like San Francisco. And you can't beat the location. We like the sun room and the beautiful garden the best. Only downside from our point of view was the often times poor reception, so making phone calls (T Mobile) and internet access were sometimes a challenge.

  • Al and Pilar were great hosts! Not only is their space beautiful, unique and well located, they also thought of great details like providing us with maps, written instructions as to where light switches were and they even offered us eggs and cheese that they had left in their fridge.

The location was great too! Close to the J-line and a quick walk to the Castro and to the Mission.

We live in a gorgeous city and hope to share it with you. We are building a file to help you learn about fun and interesting things to do while you are here and will also provide a map with directions. We are both retired, Al from marriage counseling and Pilar from Teaching. We now wish to travel and also continue with our volunteer work: ending corporal punishment of children for both of us and more equal access of diverse ethnicities in schools for Pilar. We enjoy our garden, friends, life long learning, and eating good food of course, with a martini also. We welcome you and hope you can stay in our lovely space while you are in San Francisco.
