Less than 2 hours from New York City, this bucolic area (Litchfield County, CT) is known for it's beauty, social luster and solitude. Many noteworthy people have made it their second (home away from) home.
Our masterfully restored and enhanced 1779 Colonial property is on the Connecticut State Register of Historic Places, and is rich with history yet modern comforts, offering you a sophisticated, private country experience on 7 acres, replete with horses. Our 15 baby chicks arrived in early May, and guests can now help themselves to fresh eggs laid by organically-fed, free-range chickens.
This two-story cottage includes a cobblestone (propane-fueled) fireplace, and a gourmet kitchen fully appointed and stocked so that you can cook and eat in if you so choose. Awaken to a selection of coffees, teas, hot cocoa and/or hot cider. And while nearby Marty's Cafe in charming Washington Depot is a favorite for our guests who like to slip out for a cappuccino or latte early in the AM, we have just added a Jura Capresso F9 semi-automatic espresso machine, complete with fresh-roasted "Inspiration" beans from a local coffee roaster so that you can stay in and make your own. And, for foodies that crave a "farm to table experience"--we can provide you with lots of suggestions re: where to find local, sustainably and in many cases organically grown produce, poultry and beef.
If you choose to eat out over cooking in, we are near an eclectic selection of restaurants, ranging from a Southern Barbecue to a British pub, and one that features organic/sustainable fare that you won't have to procure or prepare yourselves. And for those that love live music, we are just one-half hour away from the Infinity Music Hall. And the highly acclaimed Warner Theater in Torrington CT (also just one half-hour away) has a great variety of both shows and performers.
We are near fabulous antique shopping, numerous artist's studios, independent bookstores and boutique shops, and several highly renowned spas (The Mayflower and the Winvian). In the alternative, for those that like to be pampered--we can arrange for you to have a Shiatsu massage right here in the privacy of the cottage.
And for those that love the outdoors, walking, running and cycling trails abound! Kent State Park, White Memorial and Steeprock Preserve are all less than 20 minutes away. And of course, there are several fantastic, scenic and challenging golf courses nearby. (Want to train out of New York with just a backpack and your bikes? We'll pick you up and drop you off at the Metro North station at Harlem Valley/Wingdale--just 20 minutes away).
For skiers, Mohawk Mountain is less than 20 minutes away. They literally invented snowmaking, so as long as it's cold enough out during the evening hours (11P-7A) for them to have their snow guns operating (which cover 100% of the mountain), they'll be white and deep enough for you to ski to your heart's content. Guests who like to challenge themselves by visiting different ski areas over the course of their stay can also venture East to Ski Sundown (which is 40 minutes away) or North into the Berkshires, and traverse the trails of Berkshire East, Butternut and/or Catamount ski areas--all less than 90 minutes away. Regardless, we are confident that you will enjoy your recreational time skiing in the area, and your après-ski time relaxing by our (thermostatically-controlled) fireplace, or by taking a rejuvenating steam shower in our (heated) marble-floored bath.
During the Summer, with advance notice (your car's registration info and an $80.00 fee payable to the Town of Warren), you can have access to a private, beautiful and secluded town beach located just 5 miles away on one of the cleanest lakes in New England.
Do you have a child attending a private school in Litchfield County? We are proximate to many area schools, including Canterbury, Kent School, South Kent School, Hotchkiss, Rumsey Hall and the Taft School.
Our guests are free to roam the property, feed the horses, gather eggs from the chicken coop, swing on our tree swing and even pounce on our trampoline.
Interaction with Guests
We normally greet our guests at check-in time, offering a brief tour and whatever area suggestions they may like. From that point forward, they are entitled to the privacy our property (and County!) offers. That said, we are a fun-loving, gregarious family (especially Jax, our dog) and just love getting to know our guests that would like to get to be known!
Other Things to Note
With our WiFi, and a super-duper, semi-automatic espresso machine, our setting and our guest cottage rivals (and beats!) any Starbucks you'll find.
If you would like to bring your dog, we do add a small fee, and ask that he/she be crated when you are away from the cottage.
We got married in NYC and drove to the Warshaws straight after. The hummingbird cottage was the perfect place to unwind. There are plenty of activities to do in the area like hiking, wine tasting, dining, etc.. and the Warshaws make your stay as pleasant as possible. There are horses on the farm, a sweet dog, and chickens. The Warshaws provide you with everything! They go the extra mile (free eggs and champagne for our wedding)! Highly Recommended!!
The first night of our stay, we discovered that the toilet would not flush. It turned out that the harsh winter froze some of the plumbing of the cottage. The Warshaws handled the situation perfectly, though. They put us up for the night in a local inn, so we were able to still enjoy most of our originally planned trip. On top of that, they refunded our reservation and offered us two future nights free of charge! They even sent us home with a dozen eggs from their chickens. We were so enchanted with the cottage and so impressed with the Warshaws that we will be heading back to the Hummingbird Haven soon.
What an amazing Valentines Day weekend we had at this cottage – the Warshaws were so accommodating in every way. First example: they actually texted us a few days in advance to make sure the fridge was stocked with our creamer of choice (half and half : ) ). Second example: due to the record cold weather (around -10 below with wind chill) they made sure to include several extra heaters in the place and kept it incredibly warm and cozy for our entire stay! Third example: my fiancé is gluten-free and they actually baked their signature blueberry muffins with a gluten-free recipe for us – such an incredibly classy touch. Fourth example: they include a super expansive folder with a ton of local food and destination recommendations and were more than helpful with any question we had. On top of all this the cottage is such a fun place with an incredible stocked kitchen and (my favorite part) a sweet steam shower and heated bathroom floor. No complaints whatsoever!!! I'd highly recommend the Warshaws place for anyone looking for a relaxing getaway : )
My husband, 2 kids (aged 2 and 2 mths) and I just spent a night at Hummingbird. The hosts were wonderful- gave us multiple great suggestions for activities to do with our toddler (CMC was great!), and we appreciated details like a diaper pail and even a toddler bed were provided.
The cottage is lovely, as depicted in the ad. Kitchen was nice to cook in, propane fireplace cozy and easy, and a steam shower was a treat.
We had a great time at Hummingbird Haven. The Warshaws were so welcoming and went above and beyond to make our stay the best it could be. Thanks!
The Warshaws were so sweet to us, and we felt so welcomed! The space was absolutely beautiful, and perfect for us. We loved the horses and Jax, the dog. Northwest Connecticut is charming, and my family loved the cottage and raved about it. As someone who loves to cook, I was amazed at the high-quality of cooking appliances, and the incredible convenient presence of basics- butter, the farm's own eggs, salt, pepper, snacks, etc., just like a real home! We loved the fireplace and the heated bathroom floors. Thank you so much, Warshaws!
We're hard-working, self-employed professionals (I am a marketing consultant, my wife a shiatsu massage therapist) that purchased what was "The Huckleberry Inn", a regionally renowned bed and breakfast. While our family occupies and uses the main home, we chose to selectively rent our cottage to couples and families anxious to enjoy bucolic Litchfield County. Our delightful, fun-loving children, Anderson and Hannah (pictured) also love bringing our guests fresh, homemade muffins, showing our property and even letting you feed apples and carrots (we supply them) to our equally-welcoming horses.
