The Sanctuary is an awesome place. The grounds are very peaceful and the staff is so kind and helpful, we felt immediately welcome. The banana pancakes for breakfast were so delicious and everything we needed help with the staff was there for us immediately. Wiuld definitely recommend this place to others. Only complaint would be the downstairs trek to the toilet in the middle of the night but thats a pretty minor issue compared to the value everywhere else at Lotus Lumbung at the Sanctuary.
We had a fantastic stay here and everybody who looked after us were just super lovely and friendly. Inside it is very relaxing and the photos do a pretty good job of showing how it all appears. Although I think it feels even greener around the pool area that the photo now. Very nice.
The wifi was solid enough and didn't have fatal connection issues—the speed fluctuated a little wildly sometimes but usually kept consistently between 1-2Mbps, which seemed pretty standard for Ubud.
It is close to Ubud centre but the road up is a major thoroughfare from the south so even though the distance is totally walkable it is so busy with such a minimal footpath (sometimes none) that you're better driving. Thankfully the driver, Nyoman, who had been arranged by the hosts to pick us up from the airport was so nice that we used him our whole trip.
The road itself may be busy but don't worry, the place is far enough back that the trees in front shelter you from the noise. I can definitely recommend this place. There are some other rooms provided in this little compound and they all looked pretty great too.
Love their place!! I could feel energy of Ubud while staying and could chill everywhere in the house. I couldn't see David and Brenda but their stuffs were so kind and friendly, they made us happy by their smiles :)
And our guide MADE was sooo great. We could experience a lot of beautiful moments because of him. He was kind, funny, has big smile and great personality. We sincerely thank him. When I'll come back to Ubud next time, I'll definitely stay at here and call Made for my guide again!! Thank you for beautiful moments for us in ubud :D
I enjoyed my stay here very much. Everything is spotless, beautiful and clean. The staff is amazing and I loved the swimming pool. I could rent a motorbike with them to hop into town quickly. The kingsize bad and the airco in the room were very comfortable.
Absolutely loved our stay at the lotus lumbung. Tucked in a cozy and warm setting with all the necessities provided. On top of that, it was really easy to get around with a scooter! Not too far away from the hustle and bustle of main attractions.
The location and place aside, I'd like to voice my heartfelt gratitude towards the staff of the sanctuary, Taman and Sak Ming in particular. My girlfriend and I took turns to fall sick on both days and they offered every bit of help possible. From sending one of your boys to buy medicine for us, to cooking breakfast despite passing the scheduled time. And before we left today, my girlfriend was really ill and had to rest so we were given the space longer until she felt better, and they were constantly checking to see if we need any further assistance. Needless to say all transportation tasks were handled by them as well.
It was then I felt so touched it almost brought me to tears to witness pure genuine care and love displayed by your amazing staff. I guess this sense of relief was channeled by the stress that we had in Seminyak right before we came to Ubud. All the locals there were just trying to con their way through into selling things, despite us being extremely fluent in Bahasa.
In conclusion, please give your staff a huge pat on the back. I would not hesitate to recommend anyone else to the beautiful people and place of yours. Thinking about their genuine smiles makes me miss the place already.
Thank you guys so much!
Desa Sanctuary was a wonderful place to stay! The accommodations were just as described and the location was great. From the start the staff was attentive and was incredibly helpful in making our time in Ubud successful. They coordinated our rental of scooters, made dinner reservations for us, came to the rescue with (an amazing!) bug ointment, and even chased down taxis for us! The breakfast was delicious, the pool beautiful, and the bed very comfortable. While it seems small, we really appreciated that each bungalow came with a water cooler. While it's typical for most to drink filtered/bottled water, Desa provides large filtered water coolers for guests to refill their bottles and cups - love that they're being mindful of being green!
The location was great. Desa Sanctuary is just a short scooter ride from the center of town, making it very easy to get to many restaurants and other fun things to do in Ubud.
Thanks so much to everyone at Desa for making our stay so easy and carefree.
A nice place to stay with a swimming pool quietly located away from the hustle & bustle.
- Staff are available most of the time
- Greeted us with the best watermelon juice I've had
- Wifi is good
- Place is well designed and cozy
- Electric went out on our last day due to severe rains (I guess it's expected in bali). A bit scary at night but comforting since you have some neighbors.
- Can be a 20 walk to the main town area, at night should use a torch (sidewalks are not developed).
If you're looking to stay in a unique balinese styled place but with privacy then this is the place for you!
I'm sorry for these problems...NO ONE should be using your toilet so that is extremely weird . I apologize..that couldn't have been nice to find. I wish I'd been notified when this happened so I could have looked into it.
I'm also very sorry that the staff didn't understand your timing for the breakfast....I will speak to them about being more "aware" of early checkouts that need their breakfast first....
and yes...as for the electric...these things do happen in our third world...solar lamps are a great suggestion. I will tell my husband to look into it...:)

David, my husband was a set designer and furniture designer for the movie industry in Los Angeles for thirty years and worked with the tops in the industry....Steven Spielberg, Jodie Foster, Robert Redford, Bruce Springsteen and many more. His built the Captains Chair for Star Trek Insurrection and had the most "ordered" bed in TV history from the TV hit, "Mad about You".
He designed furniture for many top Restaurants in Los Angeles from the Saddle Peak Lodge in Malibu to Malibu Adobe with Ali McGraw. His resume is extensive and his client list is long....Billy Crystal, David Hasselhof, Arnold Schwarzanegger to Keenan Wayans.
He has translated that skill into building ten amazingly different houses since he's come to Bali. Our house is amazing and you will see why he is so in demand!
I have a variety of interests that keep me busy. I was a hairdresser for 30 years in the US. I have spent years doing spiritual growth work and now work with others with addiction and codependency issues. I love this work and the chance to give back what I was taught. I've been an artist my whole life so our home is filled with original art ( mine and others) and I have an awesome studio..Anyone that loves to paint will fall in love here. My latest passion is teaching Zumba, What a blast!
As you can see, we are both loving our life and filling the hours manifesting our dreams. We both are creative artists and love to explore the world and the people in it.
Since we've been in Bali we've been taking in South East Asia. We love Vietnam, and Thailand for their amazing cuisine.
We are frequently traveling, so we are sorry that we don't get to meet all our guests, but we leave you in the hands of an amazing staff and manager, Sakming, who will be your contact person.
