  • When I first arrived, I was a stressed out city slicker so the place took some getting use to (I wasn't expecting the Hilton but I think I was a little unprepared for how rustic the lumbung actually was). After the second day though, I was completely won over. The off-the-beaten track location of Desa Sanctuary is unmatched and I fell in love with the cosy, cabin-like enclosure of the elevated bedroom, the outdoor living room and its proximity to the pool (not noisy at all despite being beside the entrance). Not too many mosquitos but all the same, it wouldn't hurt to have some bug spray or mosquito repellent patches with you.

Over the course of 8 days, I was treated to consistently delicious breakfasts (the banana pancakes with fruit salad were by far the best!) by the smiley staff who were attentive without being intrusive. I wouldn't call the property itself 'luxurious' but the wonderful staff and peaceful setting made it a 5-star experience! As stated in previous reviews, the sanctuary was a bit of a walk to the main areas of Ubud but daily transport was easily organised whether it was a motorbike driven by a member of the staff (I went to the Yoga Barn everyday riding pillion) or a car if I was venturing off to a more off-grid location like Gunung Kawi. If you are into exploring the area and are adept at handling a motorbike (I wasn't), hiring one for the length of your stay is definitely recommended. Otherwise, staying put and ordering in cheap, delicious meals is always a wonderful idea. The unique village-like ambience also makes it easy to get to know other guests although if you wanted to keep to yourself, you can comfortably retreat into your own space. The houses are quite close together but it didn't feel any less private. The neighbours next to the property were a little noisy at times but this was likely due to the fact that I chose to stay over during Nyepi and there were daily celebrations happening at the time. All and all, an amazing stay that didn't break the bank. I will definitely return :)

  • We enjoyed our stay here very much. We had great email communication with the owners and the staff are very friendly and happy to help and our driver was there with a smile to pick us up from Denpasar airport.
The bedroom was my favourite part about the lumbung as it's upstairs and feels cosy (great bed), clean, quiet and cool- the only disadvantage being you have to get down the stairs in the night to go to the bathroom.
It felt really convenient to have a kitchen area with tea, kettle etc and a big water filter. The bathroom was adequate and the seating area spacious.
The location is slightly out of town so I would recommend hiring a scooter or a bicycle to get into the main part of Ubud.
    Many Thanks

    La décoration est + que vétuste a l'étage armoire en friche, miroir cassé. Les WC sont au RDC;
La décoration est assez sommaire pour un pays qui se trouve être le Paradis de la décoration.
Pas assez de transat autour de la piscine (5) pour 5 chalets.
Sinon le personnel est très sympas.

    Response from David And Brenda:

We are sorry Joelle could hear the guests next door…we usually just ask guests to quiet down after 10 if there is any noise.
Our decor is chosen with a Balinese/Western feel to allow people to have the comfort of great lighting, air con, hot shower and great beds and beddings.
We hope Joelle enjoyed her time in Bali

  • Although we did not get to meet David and Brenda, we were received very well. The staff was great and accommodating re: check in / out policy. Matt and I had a great time but I am not sure this is the bungalow will fit all travelers. For instance we had a friendly house cat stay with us on the bottom floor and the bungalow in general is very open to nature (i.e. partly exposed bathroom, insects, geckos). The place is a bit far from Ubud proper but we took a private car every day to go far into Bali island so that was not a huge issue. The banana pancakes are big plus!

  • Great spot! Good location and the pool really makes it. Love the small enclosed community and it was just a short 20 minute walk into Ubud. A motorbike is super helpful! The staff is extremely helpful and nice. Just be aware since the downstairs is partially open there are bugs! But only at a certain time of night. Great place to spend your Ubud vacation!

  • quiet getaway in ubud, worth the cost..good staff..use outside taxi (in house a bit pricey)

  • Stayed in the Lumbung for 10 days and had a great time staying here. The only downside was the distance into the town, it does take 20-30 minutes to walk and it's not very fun when it's dark or raining. There is also not really a footpath, so it's not safe to walk at night. Even though walking is always quite challenging in Ubud. On our third day we did hire a motorbike and the problem was solved. Staff are very lovely, friendly and helpful. The breakfast is included is always pretty good. Try the banana pancake! Would defiantly stay here again :) Thanks

  • Communications were excellent and everything was very easy. Unfortunately we didn't manage to actually stay at the place due to illness that left us far away.

About
David, my husband was a set designer and furniture designer for the movie industry in Los Angeles for thirty years and worked with the tops in the industry....Steven Spielberg, Jodie Foster, Robert Redford, Bruce Springsteen and many more. His built the Captains Chair for Star Trek Insurrection and had the most "ordered" bed in TV history from the TV hit, "Mad about You". He designed furniture for many top Restaurants in Los Angeles from the Saddle Peak Lodge in Malibu to Malibu Adobe with Ali McGraw. His resume is extensive and his client list is long....Billy Crystal, David Hasselhof, Arnold Schwarzanegger to Keenan Wayans. He has translated that skill into building ten amazingly different houses since he's come to Bali. Our house is amazing and you will see why he is so in demand! I have a variety of interests that keep me busy. I was a hairdresser for 30 years in the US and clients still find me, even in Bali. I love doing hair and spending quality time with people. I have spent years doing spiritual growth work and now work with others with addiction and codependency issues and also do Money Coaching. I love this work and the chance to give back what I was taught. I've been an artist my whole life so our home is filled with original art ( mine and others) and I have an awesome studio..Anyone that loves to paint will fall in love here. My latest passion is teaching Zumba, What a blast! As you can see, we are both loving our life and filling the hours manifesting our dreams. We both are creative artists and love to explore the world and the people in it. Since we've been in Bali we've been taking in South East Asia. We love Vietnam, and Thailand for their amazing cuisine. We are frequently traveling, so we are sorry that we don't get to meet all our guests, but we leave you in the hands of an amazing staff and manager, Sakming, who will be your contact person.
