Alejandro and I look forward to welcoming you to our newly renovated 130 year-old house in a lovely, peaceful and historical area of Edinburgh.
The room is warm and quiet, with a small wardrobe, desk, and two comfortable chairs. It includes a private bathroom, with a great shower and underfloor heating. We provide towels and bed-linen, and free use of our Wifi. There is a TV in the room with a built-in DVD player, so feel free to bring along some of your favourite films, or borrow one of ours.
If you are a group or family travelling together, you can rent out our twin room as well (see our other listing). It contains two very comfortable fold-down beds with excellent mattresses - suitable for both adults and children (not toddlers, sorry).
If you wish to rent out both rooms, please get in touch and we can let you know what the exact cost will be.
We offer a simple, self-serve breakfast (tea/ coffee, juice, cereal, toast) and you are welcome to use the kitchen at any time of day. We provide a key for your room(s) and the front door so you can come and go as you please.
Interaction with Guests
We like our guests to feel relaxed and comfortable in our house, so whilst we like to get to know people, we also respect their privacy.
With guests who like to chat, we have had some long and lovely conversations around the kitchen table. We have made some good friends through hosting, and hope to make many more, but totally understand that some people like to keep their own company.
We live on the ground floor of a "Colonies" house, a style unique to Edinburgh. We have an ever-developing garden with a sheltered patio, which is great when the sun shines (which it does here more than people think!), and are right next to a tree-lined pathway, so we get a sense of being in the countryside even though we are in the city centre (see Street View for a photo). Our guests often comment on how quiet and peaceful it is, despite being so near the city centre.
Our favourite parts of the neighbourhood are the streets where we live, the big park 2 minutes walk from the house, and the canal, on which there are houseboats, barge cafes, swans, ducks, joggers, cyclists and lots of other wildlife!
There are two well-stocked local stores a couple of minutes walk away where you can get most provisions you will need for your stay. You can also enjoy beers and wines from all over the world, as well as great food and a friendly local atmosphere at one of Edinburgh's top ten pubs only 10 minutes walk away. There are also Chinese and Indian restaurants within 10 minutes walk, with many more 15-20 minutes away (or 5 minutes by bus).
We are on a direct bus route from the airport and the two stations. The nearest bus stops to the city centre are about 7 minutes walk away, and it's about a 10-15 minute bus ride into town depending on the time of day. There are between 10 and 20 buses per hour into the city centre.
Alternatively you can stroll along the lovely canal tow-path and watch the barges, swans, ducks, cormorants, etc. float on by.
We don't really set any rules as we like to believe that most people are respectful and honest. However, we hope that people who come and visit us will tell us when there is anything wrong so we can fix it and we will do the same with them.
Amazing! Harriet and Alejandro are top people! Harriet looked after us properly when we arrived to explain everything we needed to know about the house and the city.
The room? The room is so cozy and comfortable! Is it clean? It's MEGA clean!
I wish I could have stayed longer.
Fantastic place to stay in Edinburgh. I meet Harriet who was lovely and welcoming. Room was clean, comfortable and very quiet. Beautiful home to stay in and easy to get into Edinburgh using nearby buses. Great first airbnb experience.
Harriet and Alejandro are two wonderful hosts. They welcomed me warmly into their home, talked amicably with me and were very helpful in answering whatever questions I had.
The description of the listing is more than accurate and their welcome home guide is more than thorough, going from the basics about to the central heating works to how they recycle, etc.
One of the things I loved most about staying with them is the peaceful neighbourhood they live in, where you can actually hear bird chirping all day long.
We had a great time staying with Alejandro and Harriet, they were both very welcoming and friendly and . The room is lovely and cosy and in a great location close to the city and transport. The walk along the canal is a must!
It was a lovely experience for us and Alejandro and Harriet made us feel very much at home.

We are a Cuban/British couple living in a lovely Edinburgh "Colonies" style house (we'll explain when you get here if you want to know more!) that we renovated a few years ago.
We speak Spanish, English and French, and welcome people from all over the world. Harriet works in the voluntary sector and Alejandro in front of house at theatres and venues around Edinburgh. Alejandro is a great Cuban dancer (you may get an impromptu dance lesson if you play your cards right) and Harriet enjoys walking, mindful meditation, T'ai Chi, gardening, socialising and, of course, dancing.
We go to Cuba as often as we can to visit Alejandro's wonderful friends and family in Santiago de Cuba - the epicentre of Cuban music and dance. We also like to try and visit other areas of the UK and Europe as Alejandro is really interested in the history and culture.
We like our guests to feel relaxed and comfortable in our house, so whilst we like to get to know people and allow them full use of the house during their stay, we also respect their privacy. We have made some good friends through hosting, and hope to make many more.
We also manage the bookings for the "Casa Particular" of our lovely niece, Adis, and her husband Alberto in Santiago de Cuba. Before managing the Casa Particular, Adis worked in the cultural sector and loves theatre and cinema. Alberto is an accountant at the Cuba Electrical Company and is seriously into soccer - particularly Barcelona.
