About this listing
Recently renovated 130 year-old house in a lovely, peaceful and historical area of Edinburgh. Your room has two beds, which can be pushed together to form a double, a sofa and desk. We offer all-day access to kitchen, shared bathroom with hosts.
The room is warm and quiet, with a small wardrobe, desk, and two comfortable chairs. It includes a private bathroom, with a great shower and underfloor heating. We provide towels and bed-linen, and free use of our Wifi. There is a TV in the room with a built-in DVD player, so feel free to bring along some of your favourite films, or borrow one of ours.
If you are a group or family travelling together, you can rent out our twin room as well (see our other listing). It contains two very comfortable fold-down beds with excellent mattresses - suitable for both adults and children (not toddlers, sorry).
If you wish to rent out both rooms, please get in touch and we can let you know what the exact cost will be.
We offer a simple, self-serve breakfast (tea/ coffee, juice, cereal, toast) and you are welcome to use the kitchen at any time of day. We provide a key for your room(s) and the front door so you can come and go as you please.
Interaction with Guests
We like our guests to feel relaxed and comfortable in our house, so whilst we like to get to know people, we also respect their privacy.
With guests who like to chat, we have had some long and lovely conversations around the kitchen table. We have made some good friends through hosting, and hope to make many more, but totally understand that some people like to keep their own company.
As we both work, we may sometimes be out when you arrive, but in order to be as flexible as possible about check-in, we have a key safe by the front door, and will send you the code for it about a week before you are due to arrive.
We live on the ground floor of a "Colonies" house, a style unique to Edinburgh. We have an ever-developing garden with a sheltered patio, which is great when the sun shines (which it does here more than people think!), and are right next to a tree-lined pathway, so we get a sense of being in the countryside even though we are in the city centre (see Street View for a photo). Our guests often comment on how quiet and peaceful it is, despite being so near the city centre.
Our favourite parts of the neighbourhood are the streets where we live, the big park 2 minutes walk from the house, and the canal, on which there are houseboats, barge cafes, swans, ducks, joggers, cyclists and lots of other wildlife!
There are two well-stocked local stores a couple of minutes walk away where you can get most provisions you will need for your stay. You can also enjoy beers and wines from all over the world, as well as great food and a friendly local atmosphere at one of Edinburgh's top ten pubs only 10 minutes walk away. There are also Chinese and Indian restaurants within 10 minutes walk, with many more 15-20 minutes away (or 5 minutes by bus).
We are on a direct bus route from the airport and the two stations. The nearest bus stops to the city centre are about 7 minutes walk away, and it's about a 10-15 minute bus ride into town depending on the time of day. There are between 10 and 20 buses per hour into the city centre.
Alternatively you can stroll along the lovely canal tow-path and watch the barges, swans, ducks, cormorants, etc. float on by.
We don't really set any rules as we like to believe that most people are respectful and honest. However, we hope that people who come and visit us will tell us when there is anything wrong so we can fix it and we will do the same with them.
Nice room and shower. Very comfortable. We especially appreciated use of the kitchen! Harriet was very nice and open.
Everything was wonderful!! , the house was very quiet, very clean and the hosts were very friendly and they helped us in anything we asked. It is very advisable!!!
Alejandro and Harriet were incredible hosts. They were extremely helpful upon our arrival and gave us great directions, bus information, and places to see during our stay. Their house is in a great location, only 20 minutes from the city center, if you don't mind that. We truly enjoyed our stay. We'd recommend them to all of our friends!
We enjoyed our time in Edinburgh very much and one main reason was that nice room from Harriet and Alejandro. The communication before was really good and helpful. Even when we stayed there they helped us with informations.
The room is very cosy and clean. And it´s so quiet, the bed is very good so we slept very well! It was nice to use the kitchen together and to meet Harriet and Alejandro there and the other guests.
Nearby is the bus stop and we often traveled to the centre of Edinburgh. It´s really good that the bus even goes directly to the airport.
Harriets is much patient to tell us how to use facilities. We feel comfortable to talk with Alejandro and Harriets. The room is gorgeous, which looks much better than we saw in the website. It is wonderful that we can use the kitchen where we are able to try western meals. Next time we arrive Edingburgh, I will choose their room.

About the Host, Alejandro & Harriet
We are a Cuban/British couple living in a lovely Edinburgh "Colonies" style house (we'll explain when you get here if you want to know more!) that we renovated a few years ago.
We speak Spanish, English and French, and welcome people from all over the world. Harriet works in the voluntary sector and Alejandro in front of house at theatres and venues around Edinburgh. Alejandro is a great Cuban dancer (you may get an impromptu dance lesson if you play your cards right) and Harriet enjoys walking, mindful meditation, T'ai Chi, gardening, socialising and, of course, dancing.
We go to Cuba as often as we can to visit Alejandro's wonderful friends and family in Santiago de Cuba - the epicentre of Cuban music and dance. We also like to try and visit other areas of the UK and Europe as Alejandro is really interested in the history and culture.
We like our guests to feel relaxed and comfortable in our house, so whilst we like to get to know people and allow them full use of the house during their stay, we also respect their privacy. We have made some good friends through hosting, and hope to make many more.
We also manage the bookings for the "Casa Particular" of our lovely niece, Adis, and her husband Alberto in Santiago de Cuba. Before managing the Casa Particular, Adis worked in the cultural sector and loves theatre and cinema. Alberto is an accountant at the Cuba Electrical Company and is seriously into soccer - particularly Barcelona.
