Alejandro and I look forward to welcoming you to our newly renovated 130 year-old house in a lovely, peaceful and historical area of Edinburgh.

The Space

The room includes a private bathroom, with a great shower and underfloor heating. We provide towels and bed-linen, and free use of our Wifi. There is a TV in the room with a built-in DVD player, so feel free to bring along some of your favourite films!

If you are a group or family travelling together, you can rent out our twin room as well (see our other listing). It contains two very comfortable fold-down beds with excellent mattresses - suitable for both adults and children.

If you wish to rent out both rooms, please get in touch and we can let you know what the exact cost will be.

Guest Access

We offer a simple, self-serve breakfast (tea/ coffee, juice, cereal, toast) and you are welcome to use the kitchen at any time of day. We provide a key for your room(s) and the front door so you can come and go as you please.

Interaction with Guests

We like our guests to feel relaxed and comfortable in our house, so whilst we like to get to know people, we also respect their privacy.

With guests who like to chat, we have had some long and lovely conversations around the kitchen table. We have made some good friends through hosting, and hope to make many more, but totally understand that some people like to keep their own company.

The Neighborhood

We live on the ground floor of a "Colonies" house, a style unique to Edinburgh. We have an ever-developing garden with a sheltered patio, which is great when the sun shines (which it does here more than people think!), and are right next to a tree-lined pathway, so we get a sense of being in the countryside even though we are in the city centre (see Street View for a photo). Our guests often comment on how quiet and peaceful it is, despite being so near the city centre.

Our favourite parts of the neighbourhood are the streets where we live, the big park 2 minutes walk from the house, and the canal, on which there are houseboats, barge cafes, swans, ducks, joggers, cyclists and lots of other wildlife!

There are two well-stocked local stores a couple of minutes walk away where you can get most provisions you will need for your stay. You can also enjoy beers and wines from all over the world, as well as great food and a friendly local atmosphere at one of Edinburgh's top ten pubs only 10 minutes walk away. There are also Chinese and Indian restaurants within 10 minutes walk, with many more 15-20 minutes away (or 5 minutes by bus).

Getting around

We are on a direct bus route from the airport and the two stations. The nearest bus stops to the city centre are about 5 minutes walk away, and it's about a 10-15 minute bus ride into town depending on the time of day. There are between 10 and 20 buses per hour into the city centre.

Alternatively you can stroll along the lovely canal tow-path and watch the barges, swans, ducks, cormorants, etc. float on by.

  • Wow! What a wondeful place to stay! We loved it here and would recommend it to anyone. Alejandro was away but we had the pleasure of meeting Harriet (his wife). She was so lovely and welcoming to us and made us feel at home right away.

The house was easy to find using Harriet's directions and was easily accessible to the town centre via public transport.

The room is lovely! Harriet showed us how to us the heating so we could get it to a temperature that suited us. The room and rest of the house was very clean and tidy. The bed is super comfy and the private en suite we had had the most amazing shower.

The only regret we had was that we didn't stay longer. Thanks so much for the lovely stay Alejandro and Harriet! :-)

  • The listing was what we expected. It was comfortable, warm and clean. The neighbourhood felt very safe, the people, friendly and helpful; very pleasing. The hosts were very welcoming, good for advice and always ready to help.

  • Alejando and Harriet are a lovely couple and very helpful hosts. My husband and I came for the Edinburgh Marathon. Harriet recommended bus routes to the expo and race start, gave us transportation schedules and options, and even woke up early on race morning to make sure we got out of the house on time to catch our ride! Furthermore, race day was very cold, so Harriet made sure the heaters were turned on to ensure we rested comfortably after the run.

We enjoyed lively conversation with Alejando. He is very animated and Harriet is just as sweet.

The room is very clean and my husband was very impressed with the quality fixtures in the bathroom. He is the type that knocks on the walls to sense construction. Alejandro and Harriet did a complete renovation of their house and it is definitely apparent.

Thank you, Alejandro and Harriet, for a wonderful stay!

  • We had a wonderful stay with Alejandro and Harriet. As hosts, they were very welcoming and provided useful tips and maps to help us discover Edinburgh. We loved the room as it was very comfortable and private. The location was fabulous! A shuttle bus from the airport took us almost right to their door and it was just a short bus ride to city centre. A small convenience store was just down the street for any small items we needed. We had no complaints and would definitely recommend a stay in Edinburgh with Alejandro and Harriet!!

  • This was our first experience with Airbnb, and it was perfect. The accommodation at Alejandro&Harriet's place is highly recommended if you want to visit Edinburg. Both of them are very nice and friendly and are always willing to help and advise about the city, they make you feel like at home. The room offers all you can find in a hotel, a double bed, tv, wardrobe, towels, a very clean and equipped bathroom. The connection on public transport with the center and the airport is very convenient and useful with busses passing very often. Also the neighbourhood is very quiet and safe, with the option to walk and enjoy its parks and the canal, located next to the house. We'll be glad to visit them again next time we stay in Edinburgh. Don't hesitate to contact them if you are looking for accommodation in the city. Thanks a lot for making our trip amazing!

  • I stayed at 3 BnBs during my trip, two of which are from airbnb, and another one is a traditional BnB place, and I like Harriet and Alejandro's place the best.

Upon booking their place, they sent detailed instructions of how to get there. The clarity of the instructions reflect a great deal of thoughts, a well-organized mind, plus good command of English. I and my fiance did not get lost at all coming from the airport. Unlike the instructions from the other two places.

I picked H&A place because of their pictures and the way they word the listing on airbnb. I felt that they would be warm and welcoming and truly care about guests having a good time while at their place, and they are exactly like that. We arrived late in the evening, and Alejandro opened the door for us. He asked us about our travel, whether we were tired. It's not necessary, after all you only need a place to stay, but it's the kind of politeness that put you at ease. Then, he proceeded to show us the room: which key opened what, how to open the window, operate the heater, all the switches in the room. All the dressers and closets are clear aside from two items, so we are free to use them. We didn't need all the space, but. I like that the room didn't appear like someone's storage had the dressers were full. He also showed us the kitchen: where the dishes and cups are stored, how to get water (by boiling tap water with an electric kettle), told us that we are free to use the coffee, the jams, bread, milk, and cereal, etc. Little things seem trivial but they were important, like the water for example: I came from a place where people either filter water or drink from the tap, how would I know people in Edinburg drink boiled water if he didn't told me? They even store up maps, both city's free ones, and their own, to show us places to go. Their map, just like their instructions are very exact. I'm an engineer, so I quite appreciate organization. Harriet saw us when we left. I thought she was going to check if we broke anything in the room, but she was just saying goodbye. Again, it's the common politeness to make you feel warm.

I actual wish I could stay longer, and talk to them about life in Edinburgh. I'm really interested in learning about another society and culture, but I packed my vacation with too many activities.

  • Alejandro and Harriet are lovely people who willingly open up their home for guests. We got a private room, private shower and toilet, wifi and tv, access to the kitchen and breakfast, and a stand of folders about the surroundings. After a long trek, this is the place you want to relax in. The centre of Edinburgh is walking distance... if you like walking :P, but there are plenty of buses going that way as well.

  • Alejandro and Harriet where lovely accommodating and warm hosts, they made us feel very welcome. They live but a 15 min bus ride from the city center. Making a meal in their kitchen straight away on arrival after traveling all day was so appreciated. The room truly looks just as you see in the picture, spot clean and the bed is comfy. Would certainly stay again if we are ever again in EDI.

About
We are a Cuban/British couple living in a lovely "Colonies" style house (we'll explain when you get here if you want to know more!) that we've just renovated. We speak Spanish, English and French, and welcome people from all over the world. Alejandro is a great Cuban dancer (you may get an impromptu dance lesson if you play your cards right) and Harriet enjoys walking, meditation, yoga, gardening, socialising and, of course, dancing. Harriet has just taken up Qi Gong too. We go to Cuba as often as we can to visit Alejandro's wonderful friends and family in Santiago de Cuba - the epicentre of Cuban music and dance. We also like to try and visit other areas of the UK and Europe as Alejandro is really interested in the history and culture. We like our guests to feel relaxed and comfortable in our house, so whilst we like to get to know people and allow them full use of the house during their stay, we also respect their privacy. We have made some good friends through hosting, and hope to make many more.
