Your oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of Colombo
A relaxing getaway with ample space for the whole family
City location, country feel. A ten mt tuk tuk ride away from the iconic Mt Lavinia Hotel and a 'Golden Mile' of tourist beach

The space
The house is my old home, and has a rustic charm being one of a few examples left of the 50's 'Art Deco' style in Sri Lanka. It has French Windows which let in lots of light and air into the living spaces. It's colourful handwoven furnishings are from the looms of well known Colombo designer Barbara Sansoni who runs the gallery chain 'Barefoot'.

Expect to have the company of colourful birds in the large leafy garden, adding to a truly authentic Sri Lankan experience,

We generally give out the whole property on each booking. We have one large and two smaller bedrooms, which can be configured according to your sleeping requirements.

Living areas have overhead fans and the main bedroom has air conditioning. There are presently 6 beds and a spare mattress and we will be flexible about accommodating larger groups if required. We are also ultra flexible about check in and check out times.

Guest access
Common areas are a lounge room, dining room and enclosed front verandah with space for all.
You have access to a kitchen, with tabletop gas stove, fridge, microwave, electric kettle, toaster, cooking utensils, crockery, cutlery etc.

Other things to note
Lavinia House is named in remembrance of the lowly gypsy Lovina whose beauty so enthralled a former British governor of Ceylon it led him to name the city of Mt Lavinia after her. Sir Thomas Maitland built his palatial residence next to her gypsy encampment on the cliffs and had her brought to him each night, through a secret tunnel, for the 7 yrs of his governance. That mansion is now the iconic Mt Lavinia hotel overlooking the best tourist beach in Colombo.

OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD

Mt Lavinia is a tranquil suburb of Colombo and is home to the stately Mt Lavinia Hotel, overlooking a 'golden mile' of sunny tourist beach. A 2 km walk from our house, the Hotel, a former Colonial Governor's Residence, is well worth a visit. It has a 200 yr old history of hosting celebrity guests from all over the world. The 'Governor's Restaurant' serves a magnificent Sri Lankan buffet breakfast and dinner. You could try a colonial style High Tea on the Terrace with spectacular views over the ocean at sunset, or experience a candlelit dinner on the beach at the 'Seafood Cove'.

Fringing the beach are other restaurants and bars with a laid back ambience especially inviting at nightfall.

From Lavinia House it's a 20mt walk/7mt tuk tuk ride to the beach and the bustling shopping street, Galle Road.

It's a short trip to the next suburb Dehiwela, which houses the National Zoo, noteworthy for it's performing elephant troupe.

10 mts stroll down Templers Rd will get you an exquisite massage at the Siddhaleppa Ayurvedic Hospital.

Further inland takes you to rustic lanes that meander through the Attidiya wetlands, where you will see paddy fields, birds and aquatic wildlife.

In the vicinity are two very exotic and influential Buddhist temples, the Bellanwila Raja Maha Vihara , which is a hive of activity and spectacular displays on the nights of the full moon each month and the Paramma Dhamma Chetiya Pirivena which has been the seat of Buddhist Education for over a century.

I've lived most of my life in Sri Lanka but now divide my time between my country of origin and my adopted home, Melbourne, Australia. Working in Sri Lanka and documenting art and cultural programs like 'Facets of Lanka' for TV and radio has given me an intimate knowledge of the island. As an avid traveller I can help with ideas for what to do and where to go in both countries. I love the roads less traveled. Melbourne is lovely and a fun place to be, but I I personally believe Sri Lanka is the most beautiful place on the planet!
