Huge Redfern Apartment w/ Parking!

Apartment - Entire home/apt · Renwick St, Redfern, NSW 2016, Australia

Welcome to The United Nations of Redfern!

In the past year, I have hosted people from Sri Lanka, Iran, Finland, Canada, Singapore, Switzerland, The US, Malaysia, The Netherlands, India, Norway, New Zealand, The United Arab Emirates, Germany, Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Hong Kong and mainland China, France, Japan, South Africa, Austria, Thailand and Argentina! And from Victoria to Queensland, from cities like Perth to towns like Dubbo.

The Space

I am offering a huge, stylish apartment in Redfern - on a quiet street, 10 minutes walk to the city. This is the size and quality of a suite in a high quality hotel for the price of an average room out of the city. Unparalleled quality and value.

If the dates you want are not available but you would still like the convenience of Redfern, please check out my other place. Look on the right of the screen and just click on My Profile (under my photo) and you will find a link to my other apartment. Alternately, you can just do a websearch for the title 'Biggest Bed in Sydney!' and it will come up.

There is secure undercover parking available. I own two apartments on the same street, and I make this available for either apartment to book . If you are driving to Sydney or planning on booking a rental car, please let me know so I can reserve the parking for you and your family, but please be aware that this needs to be checked in advance.

Nearly 80 meters large (860 square feet) the apartment has a separate bedroom featuring a queen size latex bed, and also a queen-size Murphy bed in the office alcove. You can see the spare bed folded away against the wall, behind my desk, in the photos showing the office. The combined living-dining-kitchen-office is spacious.

The normal check in is 10am and checkout is 8am. This is to allow for cleaning before new guests arrive - but please note that If it is just me here the night before, you can check in as earlier. Handy for early morning arrivals. Same for departure time. I'll be as flexible as I can. I have had guests leave bags here as late at 6pm on the day they check out, rather than lug them around town before heading to the airport for an evening flight. Similary, ss many flight get into Sydney at 7am, people clearing customs and getting into town at 8 are welcome to drop their bags while the cleaner makes it ready for you, and then grab a local breakfast. Please just ask! Please note: if your booking is for 29 January of 2014, check in will have to be after 2pm as guests have asked to stay later that day for a flight.

The building is about 60 years old - formerly a garage and offices - but was converted to a block of five apartments 10 years ago. Mine was renovated three years ago. There is no lift, but there are only nine steps to the apartment, and four more from the lobby up to the living room.

Redfern is at the southern end of the CBD, so you can have a leisurely stroll right along George St to the Opera House, Circular Quay and the Harbour Bridge, and come back through the Botanic Gardens.

I also provide tea, coffee (with your own espresso machine), cereal and fresh milk for your breakfast.

Airbnb is about affordable travel and the experience of living like a local. It's not cheap accommodation but rather community built on trust, local knowledge, a common interest in travel and a common believe that staying in someone's own home offers a different and superior experience when travelling. Because of this - and the huge costs of Sydney real estate - I am not able to discount. The prices on offer are cheaper than a second rate hotel, but the apartment is huge and of excellent quality!

Ministers, atheists, IT professionals, professional skiers, professional yachtswomen and yachtsmen, artists, social workers, jewellers, accountants, people on their 10th wedding anniversary, 25th wedding anniversary, gay couples, single parents, toddlers, teenagers, film makers, family reunions, old-friend reunions, nurses, business owners, builders, retirees taking a whole year off to enjoy each other's company as they travel the world.

Not a bad word from any of them, not a bad word about any of them. The world which comes through your door as an Airbnb host makes my heart soar.

Interaction with Guests

The apartment is offered in its entirety. You have the whole place to yourselves! Check in is from 10am but if you arrive after 8, Max, my cleaner, will be there and you can leave your bags and grab a local coffee while he finishes preparing the apartment for you. Keys are left in a secure safe for guests who arrive at different times in case Max and I are not around. I try and meet all of my guests at some stage of their stay, as I feel that is is an important aspect of being a host. As well as providing an apartment, I want to welcome you to my city.

The Neighborhood

Redfern is one of the oldest areas in Sydney, and yet this place is so quiet considering how close it is to the middle of Sydney. It's a mix of 19th century terrace houses, conversions and new apartment developments. The area was down-at-heels for years, but its proximity to the city and intact history has seen it blossom into a new, funky area (wall to wall retro furniture shops and new small bars) in the last 10 years.

The city centre is on your doorstep, and two major railways stations within a five minute walk means that the whole of Sydney is easily accessible. The Eastern Suburbs line goes through Redfern, so Bondi Station and the Eastern Suburbs are about 16 minutes away. Bondi and Tamarama Beach are a further 15 minutes by bus from the the station. It's a great city - and this is a great spot to explore it from.

There are cafes and restaurants within a block, and within a 15 minute walk to the east are the exciting eateries and bars of Crown St and Surry Hills. Newtown is a 20 minute walk to the west and Erskineville village is between the two.

Getting around

Central Station is 800 meters away (845 yards) so all train lines - including the Airport Line are walking distance.. The train trip is about 11 minutes, and the walk across Prince Alfred Park is another 10. Redfern Station is 500 meters (540 yards) away. About 1km (.6 of a mile) to Sydney University or the University of Technology, Sydney. the train to the airport goes under the apartment half a block away. You will hear a quiet rumble as it passes but it is not loud enough to wake you. Most nights I am not even aware of it - and when I do hear it, I love the way it not too loudly makes me aware of how close I am to the middle of such a great city.

  • We had the best time in Sydney. Paul is the perfect host, he helped us find a beautiful sportsbar which was not that easy for Easter Sunday. The apartment is very central so you can walk almost every where. The indoor parking space is another plus. We enjoyed his apartment very much, there is everything you need for a night in. All in all highly recommended!

  • Me and my friends stayed here last weekend and everything was perfect! Paul was a great host (we were lucky enough to meet him on the last day) and the place was amazing! Very spacious and clean and Paul had a huge collection of movies which was great when some of us were up early and waiting for the others to get up. The apartment is also very close to Redfern station, and one stop away from Central station! All in all we had a great weekend at the apartment and look forward to staying again! Thanks Paul for accommodating our cleaning requests; definitely an A+ host! :)

  • A friend and I stayed at Paul's apartment and found it to be a fantastic spot - close to the city and transport. It's a quiet spot considering how close to the city. Place was clean and spacious. We could not have been happier with our choice. Highly recommend Paul's place!

  • Superb apartment, great location, fantastic host. The apartment was spacious, clean and conveniently located for transport to the city center. Paul left full instructions which made gaining access and using the facilities extremely easy and hassle free. He was always on hand to answer any questions etc. This is the perfect base for a trip to Sydney and we just wish we had longer there.

  • Paul is a great host and I had a wonderful 8-night stay at his apartment. It is spacious, comfortable and a peaceful respite after a day of sightseeing. The apartment is just 5-min away from Redfern station which makes it so much easier to get around the city. Would highly recommend anyone to stay with Paul if you’re visiting Sydney!

  • Paul McCann's lovely flat was our home base during our recent 5-day visit to Sidney. The flat itself is beautiful and spacious, with kitchen, and especially a bathroom of the sort you'd expect to find in a 5-star hotel. It has a nice stereo connected to a flat screen complete with an Apple TV, so any visitors with an iTunes music library can stream music effortlessly. The building where the flat is on the first floor, a fews steps above the steet, is quite secure, entered by an impressive security gate. Althoughwe were inand out visiting family, sightseeing, and going to opera and theater, Paul did visit to say hello and have a brief chat and a quick glass of wine one afternoon. He's a gracious host and was available via cell phone to answer questions a out the flat and help us get settled.

Redfern area of Sydney is an up and coming area which has had a kind of crusty reputation, but is rapidly gentrifying and is centrally located and only a 10 minute train ride from Circular Quay with its ferries, restaurants and the famous Sydney Opera House. The flat is on a surprisingly quiet street just one block off the very busy Regent Street. We can heartily recommend this Asa great place to stay in. Sydney--well worth the quite reasonable nightly rate, considering how modern, beautiful a spacious it is.

  • Paul's place was a wonderful find. A stylish and cosy haven in the center of everything with the added bonus of parking! Dealing with Paul was a pleasure he was always accessible, responsive and extremely accommodating. Would definitely stay here again. Thanks Paul!

  • A simply amazing place. Home away from home. Spacious ... Clean ... And within walking distance of downtown Sydney if you like the exercise. Conflicting schedules would not allow us to meet Paul, our host. Hopefully when we stay here again on our way home, it will happen.

I am a lecturer at the largest counselling and psychotherapy college in Australia, and this work is fascinating both in terms of the wonderful students, and also the amazing staff with whom I work. I spent 10 years being a social researcher on sexual behaviour, gender and sexuality, having come to academia late after running a small manufacturing business, being a tram driver in Melbourne and a wasted year in a clothing factory after high school. Meeting my guests - especially those visiting Australia - is like having a little holiday without leaving Sydney as I get to hear what their home countries are like. I manage to meet over 80% of my guests to welcome them to town! And this is the best part of being a host with Airbnb. I have also been really lucky to meet a lot of other local hosts, managers from the San Francisco head office, and the wonderful, warm and friendly staff at the Sydney office. I have traveled extensively in Australasia, Europe and North America, including staying in Airbnb homes so I really know what makes for a good stay. It's both a pleasure and an honour to have folks stay at my place, especially international guests who are traveling around this lovely country. I have two great apartments, close to the centre of Sydney, available as the entire place for up to four guests. I do not stay when guests are staying - you have the whole apartment to yourselves. Redfern is an original area of Sydney, featuring some of the oldest homes dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Prince Alfred Park is nearby, and the city itself is on the other side of that. You can literally walk to town in under 10 minutes, and it is well supported with public transport to all parts of the city only a four blocks from my front door.
