Welcome to The United Nations of Redfern, right by Sydney's Downtown!
Guests from across the world have made this huge, comfortable, centrally-located home their own - for vacations, reunions, work, romantic getaways - and honeymoons!
In the past three years, I have welcomed people from Sri Lanka, Iran, Finland, Canada, Singapore, The US, Malaysia, The Netherlands, India, Norway, New Zealand, The United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, Germany, Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Hong Kong and mainland China, France, Switzerland, Japan, South Africa, Austria, Thailand and Argentina!
I am offering a huge, stylish apartment on a quiet street, 10 minutes walk to Central Station or just five to Redfern Station. It is literally four blocks to town. This is the size and quality of a suite in a high quality hotel for the price of an average room out of the city. Unparalleled quality and value.
If the dates you want are not available but you would still like the convenience of Redfern, please check out my other place. Look further down the page - below the reviews. You will see 'About the Host'. Click on the '+ More' link, then 'View Full Profile'. On that page, you will see my other apartment listed as 'Biggest Bed in Sydney!'
There is secure undercover parking available. I own two apartments on the same street, and I make this available for either apartment to book . If you are driving to Sydney or planning on booking a rental car, please let me know so I can reserve the parking for you and your family, but please be aware that this needs to be checked in advance.
Nearly 80 meters large (860 square feet) the apartment has a separate bedroom featuring a queen size latex bed, and also a queen-size Murphy bed in the office alcove. You can see the spare bed folded away against the wall, behind my desk, in the photos showing the office. The combined living-dining-kitchen-office is spacious.
The normal check in is 10am and checkout is 8am. This is to allow for cleaning before new guests arrive - but please note that if you are on an early morning flight, you can drop your bags off and head out for coffee and breakfast - many great local cafes! - while we finish getting ready for you. Handy for early morning arrivals. Same for departure time. I'll be as flexible as I can. I have had guests leave bags here as late at 6pm on the day they check out, rather than lug them around town before heading to the airport for an evening flight. But if not otherwise discussed, checkout is 8am to allow two hours cleaning.
The building is about 60 years old - formerly a garage and offices - but was converted to a block of five apartments 10 years ago. Mine was renovated three years ago. There is no lift, but there are only nine steps to the apartment, and four more from the lobby up to the living room.
Redfern is at the southern end of the CBD, so you can have a leisurely stroll right along George St to the Opera House, Circular Quay and the Harbour Bridge, and come back through the Botanic Gardens.
I also provide tea, coffee (with your own espresso machine), cereal and fresh milk for your breakfast.
Airbnb is about affordable travel and the experience of living like a local. It's not cheap accommodation but rather community built on trust, local knowledge, a common interest in travel and a common believe that staying in someone's own home offers a different and superior experience when travelling. Because of this - and the huge costs of Sydney real estate - I am not able to discount. The prices on offer are cheaper than a second rate hotel, but the apartment is huge and of excellent quality!
Please cook! The pantry is also well stocked with spices, rice and pasta, oils, tinned tomatoes etc. I am happy to make this available on an honesty system - feel free to help yourself but please replace what you use. No need to replace oils, spices etc if you use the last of the container. Just leave me a note of what to stock up on again! I want to make your stay as effortless as possible.

Interaction with Guests
The apartment is offered in its entirety. You have the whole place to yourselves! Keys are left in a secure safe for guests who arrive at different times in case my cleaner and I are not around. I try and meet all of my guests at some stage of their stay, as I feel that is is an important aspect of being a host. As well as providing an apartment, I want to welcome you to my city.
Proximity to the city! You cannot beat the neighbourhoods which abut the CBD for convenience, and Redfern Station is one of the best for getting EVERYWHERE in Sydney. I love the history, the architecture, the mix of people from every imaginable culture who live side by side on this very modern Sydney village.
Redfern is one of the oldest areas in Sydney, and yet this place is so quiet considering how close it is to the middle of Sydney. It's a mix of 19th century terrace houses, conversions and new apartment developments. The area was down-at-heels for years, but its proximity to the city and intact history has seen it blossom into a new, funky area (wall to wall retro furniture shops and new small bars) in the last 10 years.
The city centre is on your doorstep, and two major railways stations within a five minute walk means that the whole of Sydney is easily accessible. The Eastern Suburbs line goes through Redfern, so Bondi Station and the Eastern Suburbs are about 16 minutes away. Bondi and Tamarama Beach are a further 15 minutes by bus from the station. It's a great city - and this is a great spot to explore it from.
Central Station is 800 meters away (845 yards) so all train lines - including the Airport Line are walking distance.. The train trip is about 11 minutes, and the walk across Prince Alfred Park is another 10. Redfern Station is 500 meters (540 yards) away. About 1km (.6 of a mile) to Sydney University or the University of Technology, Sydney. The train to the airport goes under the apartment half a block away. You will hear a quiet rumble as it passes but it is not loud enough to wake you. Most nights I am not even aware of it - and when I do hear it, I love the way it not too loudly makes me aware of how close I am to the middle of such a great city.
This is a lovely, friendly building. All I ask is that you respect my home, and my neighbours with some simple guidelines:
Please don't smoke in the apartment, or in the hallway or stairwell - smoke will blow up into neighbours' windows. If you are a smoker, please go outside, and well away from the front door and the door of the neighbouring houses.
Respect the space and the things in it.
Please don't use illegal drugs in the house.
Please don't invite visitors (strangers) into the apartment to stay over. No guests except those registered in advance. Friends who wish to join you for dinner or a drink are cool, but remember that they are your responsibility while you are here, so please, no parties.
Please be courteous and kind. Hosting requires a good relationship with my neighbours.
Please talk quietly in the hallways and use inside voices in the apartment. When moving in and out, please be aware of the noise of bags on wheels on hard surface.
The apartment building is quiet, with nice neighbours,so please be respectful of them with noise. My ability to host depends on them being happy to have other people in the building - so far everything is going well, and they are happy for me to open my home.
Paul is responsive to all inquiry made before my trip even at odd timings at time.
Highly recommended as a host, he waited for me to arrive and orientate us on the appliances and even brought us to purchase opal cards and walk us back to the apartment.
The apartment itself is very clean and compact with the much needed necessities and yes the bed is comfortable with the blanket warmer. The location is accessible as well and it is minutes away from the Redfern station. Neighborhood is quiet and i really enjoy the peaceful environment.
Paul also greeted us goodbye on our departure day by coming over to the apartment.
Highly recommended to anyone who is in Sydney to stay in this lovely apartment.
Thank you Paul for the great hosting. We have enjoyed our 1 week stay in your lovely apartment.
Thanks Anotai! It was lovely to briefly meet you all as well. Thanks for your kind words, which I have translated into English here:
Dank Anotai! Es war schön, kurz treffen Sie alle auch. Vielen Dank für Ihre freundlichen Worte, die ich hier ins Englische übersetzt:
Paul is really a great host. He has informed us of the beginning of everything and given helpful tips. He was easy to reach at all times and if you wrote him a message, he also responded very promptly. The apartment is just perfect and has all the luxury. From dreamy bed in the huge flat to very well equipped kitchen. On the day we we left we met Paul and learned quickly that he is really a very nice person and we would stay there again anytime.
My mum and I had a great time in Sydney staying in this apartment. This apartment is huge and it's exactly what you see in the pictures. It's 7 mins walk to Redfern station which is quite convenient since many lines stop there. It's also 6 mins away from many buses heading to CBD. It's a 20 mins direct bus ride to Elizabeth Street. we used the buses more during our time there. The apartment was really clean. Paul was very attentive. He came to greet us and always gave us fast responses for our queries. I would definitely recommend this to everyone who is visiting Sydney. I am so glad that i went for Paul's apartment.
Ha, it was an honour to be your host. I'm glad that you and your mum had a great time here. You planned it perfectly for the weather - while it is still autumn, the day you left was the coldest April day on 30 years! I'm glad to think that you are safe and warm back in Singapore, and with many happy memories of your time here in Sydney. Please pass on my best wishes to you mum. Paul
Excellent host - fast response pre and during holiday. Clear instructions for entry etc. Extremely helpful re questions we had and easy to contact via text - even brought us milk on arrival - greatly appreciated! Nothing was too much bother. Can't praise enough.
Would happily recommend flat for a short stay in Sydney.
Secure entry system and clean close: flat itself very clean: comfortable bed: plenty of cupboard space: contemporary bathroom with very large walk in shower and plenty of hot water : we didn't really cook - just eggs and bits and pieces - but kitchen utensils etc seemed adequate if you wanted to: large fridge/freezer very useful: washing machine and dryer/airer provided - essential if you are on an extended travel schedule as we were (I struggled with the washing machine though - seemed to be stuck on wash? - so could only wash when in to change programme manually - minor irritant!): large TV with local channels in lounge: excellent wifi connection: lots and lots of "things" provided for guest use if needed - shampoo shower cream washing powder store cupboard ingredients etc. For me there were a couple of downsides - I couldn't sleep due to street/traffic/train noise from Central Station and the fact I found sleeping in an "internal" room with no outside windows very claustrophobic and quite oppressive so I was tired during the day. However this would not be a problem for everyone.
Situation is ideal for accessing Central Station - a pleasant eight minute walk through a lovely park - with outdoor pool. The Surry Hills Market with a Coles Supermarket Liquorland and independent shops is quite a distance away but still walkable if you don't need anything too heavy and there is a smaller Woolworths quite close to the main entrance at Central Station. Lots of convenience stores in the area. Didn't use the local area much as not really "inviting" - did initially go for meals (twice - one very expensive the other pub food - neither very good) and tried bars but didn't really like which was a shame as we truly did want to "go local" as we do at home. However Surry Hills and Darlinghurst - though quite a bit further - offered a better range of pubs/ restaurants as did central Sydney - even the tourist areas! - so we were not left struggling for food or drinks!!! In beautiful Sydney??!!!
Thank you Paul for being a lovely host and person - sorry we didn't meet - maybe next time?
Perfect unit. Perfect host. Perfect location. Paul always goes out of his way to make your airbnb experience friendly, warm and hassle free. I've stayed in Paul's Renwick St units twice. He has amazing apartments which have the most comfortable beds and everything you could possibly need. We were able to park our car across the road at the other unit. You don't need a car here because walking to Central, Darling Harbour etc is about 15 minutes. Our 7 year old did it easily. The train is about 4 mins walk and Redfern Street has so many great coffee shops. I will stay at Paul's properties again and again and again!
The apt in Renwick Street is definitely awesome. Spacious room, complete equipment for living there as well as Paul's readiness for help and hospitality all make it perfect!
But the location of this apt is a double-edged sword: close to Redfern train station, which brings convenience for transportation, yet brings inevitable noise coming from underground especially at late night.
Anyway, it is a fabulous apt worth living and recommendation:)
Paul epitomises a good host in every way! Welcoming and always contactable both before and during our stay.
I was getting very worried as we approached our stay as my baby had suddenly become a toddler and this was the first place that we had booked that wasn't specifically baby friendly.
I needn't have worried. She loved exploring the huge open space and as she can't access our kitchen at home, she had particular fun there- just a few easy measures to block her from opening everything was needed and that became the role of our suitcases! There are a few steps up to the main area from the entrance way and bathroom that we were able to block with the coffee table - yes we improvised!
For any other house bound parents staying then (website hidden) is your friend! The best food delivery service I have ever found and yum Thai is a must.
Having the parking spot was great, though we hardly used the car when there as redfern station is so easy (though no lift to the platform yet)
Great place and highly recommend it.

I am a lecturer at the largest counselling and psychotherapy college in Australia, and this work is fascinating both in terms of the wonderful students, and also the amazing staff with whom I work. I spent 10 years being a social researcher on sexual behaviour, gender and sexuality, having come to academia late after running a small manufacturing business, being a tram driver in Melbourne and a wasted year in a clothing factory after high school.
Meeting my guests - especially those visiting Australia - is like having a little holiday without leaving Sydney as I get to hear what their home countries are like. I manage to meet over 80% of my guests to welcome them to town! And this is the best part of being a host with Airbnb. I have also been really lucky to meet a lot of other local hosts, managers from the San Francisco head office, and the wonderful, warm and friendly staff at the Sydney office. I was also asked to speak on the SuperHost panel at the inaugural Airbnb Open in November of 2014. It was really thrilling to be included with such passionate, professional hosts talking to a huge room full of excited people.
I have traveled extensively in Australasia, Europe and North America, including staying in Airbnb homes so I really know what makes for a good stay. It's both a pleasure and an honour to have folks stay at my place, especially international guests who are traveling around this lovely country.
I have two great apartments, close to the centre of Sydney, available as the entire place for up to four guests. I do not stay when guests are staying - you have the whole apartment to yourselves.
Redfern is an original area of Sydney, featuring some of the oldest homes dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Prince Alfred Park is nearby, and the city itself is on the other side of that. You can literally walk to town in under 10 minutes, and it is well supported with public transport to all parts of the city only a four blocks from my front door.
