About this listing
Welcome to The United Nations of Redfern, right beside Sydney's Downtown!
Guests from across the world have made this huge, comfortable, centrally-located home their own - for vacations, reunions, work, romantic getaways - and honeymoons! The Opera House and Harbour Bridge are an easy 40 minute walk, or just ten minutes on the City Circle train from Redfern.
In the past four years, I have welcomed people from Saudi Arabia, Trinidad and Tobago, Sri Lanka, Iran, Finland, Canada, South Korea, Singapore, The USA, Russia, Malaysia, The Netherlands, India, Norway, New Zealand, The United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, Spain, Indonesia, Germany, Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Brazil, Egypt, Denmark, Hong Kong and mainland China, France, Switzerland, Japan, Dubai, Mexico, East Timor, South Africa, Austria, Thailand and Argentina! And my first Belgians have just booked, just as I have booked my first holiday to Belgium :)
You are welcome to stay at my apartment no matter what country you are from. I have hosted Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, atheists and probably other faiths. All have been welcomed, and everyone always will be at my place. Very GLBTI-friendly. Very straight friendly too! During these times when the world is on edge, travel is a wonderful way for people to connect, and for strangers to become trusted friends. Whoever you are, this can be your home in Sydney.
There is secure undercover parking available. I own two apartments on the same street, and I make this available for either apartment to book . If you are driving to Sydney or planning on booking a rental car, please let me know so I can reserve the parking for you and your family, but please be aware that this needs to be checked in advance.
I am offering a huge, stylish apartment on a quiet street, 10 minutes walk to Central Station or just five to Redfern Station. It is literally four blocks to town. This is the size and quality of a suite in a high quality hotel for the price of an average room out of the city. Unparalleled quality and value.
If the dates you want are not available but you would still like the convenience of Redfern, please check out my other place. Look further down the page - below the reviews. You will see 'About the Host'. Click on the '+ More' link, then 'View Full Profile'. On that page, you will see my other apartment listed as 'Biggest Bed in Sydney!'
Any city apartment will have some noise to deal with. While there is almost no traffic noise from the street, there is one subway line a block away. Through the day I don't even notice it, and while I am a light sleeper, it rarely disturbs me at night. Many guests comment on how quiet and calm the apartment is, but some guests have noticed it and mentioned it to me. I do provide earplugs if you need them (I always travel with them anyway). Airbnb functions on the basis of honesty so I like to point this out - as well as noting how big and comfortable the apartment is!
Nearly 80 meters large (860 square feet) the apartment has a separate bedroom featuring a queen size latex bed, and also a queen-size Murphy bed in the office alcove. You can see the spare bed folded away against the wall, behind my desk, in the photos showing the office. The combined living-dining-kitchen-office is spacious.
The normal check in is 10am and checkout is 8am. This is to allow for cleaning before new guests arrive - but please note that if you are on an early morning flight, you can drop your bags off and head out for coffee and breakfast - many great local cafes! - while we finish getting ready for you. Handy for early morning arrivals. Same for departure time. I'll be as flexible as I can. I have had guests leave bags here as late at 6pm on the day they check out, rather than lug them around town before heading to the airport for an evening flight. But if not otherwise discussed, checkout is 8am to allow two hours cleaning.
The building is about 60 years old - formerly a garage and offices - but was converted to a block of five apartments 10 years ago. Mine was renovated three years ago. There is no lift, but there are only nine steps to the apartment, and four more from the lobby up to the living room.
Redfern is at the southern end of the CBD, so you can have a leisurely stroll right along George St to the Opera House, Circular Quay and the Harbour Bridge, and come back through the Botanic Gardens.
I also provide tea, coffee (with your own espresso machine), cereal and fresh milk for your breakfast.
Airbnb is about affordable travel and the experience of living like a local. It's not cheap accommodation but rather community built on trust, local knowledge, a common interest in travel and a common believe that staying in someone's own home offers a different and superior experience when travelling. Because of this - and the huge costs of Sydney real estate - I am not able to discount. The prices on offer are cheaper than a second rate hotel, but the apartment is huge and of excellent quality!
Please cook! The pantry is also well stocked with spices, rice and pasta, oils, tinned tomatoes etc. I am happy to make this available on an honesty system - feel free to help yourself but please replace what you use. No need to replace oils, spices etc if you use the last of the container. Just leave me a note of what to stock up on again! I want to make your stay as effortless as possible.

The apartment is offered in its entirety. You have the whole place to yourselves! Keys are left in a secure safe for guests who arrive at different times in case my cleaner and I are not around. I try and meet all of my guests at some stage of their stay, as I feel that is is an important aspect of being a host. As well as providing an apartment, I want to welcome you to my city.
Proximity to the city! You cannot beat the neighbourhoods which abut the CBD for convenience, and Redfern Station is one of the best for getting EVERYWHERE in Sydney. I love the history, the architecture, the mix of people from every imaginable culture who live side by side on this very modern Sydney village.
Redfern is one of the oldest areas in Sydney, and yet this place is so quiet considering how close it is to the middle of Sydney. It's a mix of 19th century terrace houses, conversions and new apartment developments. The area was down-at-heels for years, but its proximity to the city and intact history has seen it blossom into a new, funky area (wall to wall retro furniture shops and new small bars) in the last 10 years.
The city centre is on your doorstep, and two major railways stations within a five minute walk means that the whole of Sydney is easily accessible. The Eastern Suburbs line goes through Redfern, so Bondi Station and the Eastern Suburbs are about 16 minutes away. Bondi and Tamarama Beach are a further 15 minutes by bus from the station. It's a great city - and this is a great spot to explore it from.
Central Station is 800 meters away (845 yards) so all train lines - including the Airport Line are walking distance. The train trip is about 11 minutes, and the walk across Prince Alfred Park is another 10. Redfern Station is 400 meters (430 yards) away. About 1km (.6 of a mile) to Sydney University or the University of Technology, Sydney.
This is a lovely, friendly building. All I ask is that you respect my home, and my neighbours with some simple guidelines:
This is a smoke-free building. Please don't smoke in the apartment, or in the hallway or stairwell - smoke will blow up into neighbours' windows. If you are a smoker, please go outside, and well away from the front door and the door of the neighbouring houses.
Respect the space and the things in it.
Please don't use illegal drugs in the house.
Please don't invite visitors (strangers) into the apartment to stay over. No guests except those registered in advance. Friends who wish to join you for dinner or a drink are cool, but remember that they are your responsibility while you are here, so please, no parties.
Please be courteous and kind. Hosting requires a good relationship with my neighbours.
Please talk quietly in the hallways and use inside voices in the apartment. When moving in and out, please be aware of the noise of bags on wheels on hard surface.
The apartment building is quiet, with nice neighbours,so please be respectful of them with noise. My ability to host depends on them being happy to have other people in the building - so far everything is going well, and they are happy for me to open my home.
I am Senior Lecturer at the largest counselling and psychotherapy college in Australia, and this work is fascinating both in terms of the wonderful students, and also the amazing staff with whom I work. I spent 10 years being a social researcher on sexual behaviour, gender and sexuality, having come to academia late after running a small manufacturing business, being a tram driver in Melbourne (a job a STILL have great dreams about!) and a wasted year in a clothing factory after high school.
Meeting my guests - especially those visiting Australia - is like having a little holiday without leaving Sydney as I get to hear what their home countries are like. I manage to meet over 80% of my guests to welcome them to town! And this is the best part of being a host with Airbnb. I have also been really lucky to meet a lot of other local hosts, managers from the San Francisco head office, and the wonderful, warm and friendly staff at the Sydney office. I was also asked to speak on the SuperHost panel at the inaugural Airbnb Open in November of 2014 and again at Paris in 2015. It was really thrilling to be included with such passionate, professional hosts talking to a huge room full of excited people.
I have traveled extensively in Australasia, Europe and North America, including staying in Airbnb homes so I really know what makes for a good stay. It's both a pleasure and an honour to have folks stay at my place, especially international guests who are traveling around this lovely country.
I have two great apartments, close to the centre of Sydney, available as the entire place for up to four guests. I do not stay when guests are staying - you have the whole apartment to yourselves.
Redfern is an original area of Sydney, featuring some of the oldest homes dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Prince Alfred Park is nearby, and the city itself is on the other side of that. You can literally walk to town in under 10 minutes, and it is well supported with public transport to all parts of the city only a four blocks from my front door.
