The holiday cottage "casa itaca" is part of a converted old farmhouse (see the other cottages by clicking on the owner profile) situated in Pollara, a hamlet on the Island of Salina. The cotteges are surrounded by gardens and vineyards and are situated in the center of the hamlet, close to the piazza and the church.
The farmhouse was built in the traditional Aeolian style with stone walls and columns to support pergolae and these orginal features have been preserved.
"Casa Itaca" has a double bedroom another rooms with two single bed, a kitchen and a covered patio where you can dine and relax. From the patio and the double bedroom you can admire spectacular views of other Aeolian Islands (Filicudi and Alicudi) which are ablaze at sunset.
Guest have a private acess, a path through the garden
The rocky beach is about 10 minutes' walk. Shops and a supermarket, a chemist, doctor as well as a bank with cash machine (ATM) are in the the village of Malfa which is 6km away. The ports of Rinella and Santa Marina are at about 12km from Pollara.
There is a regular bus service that connects Pollara with the other villages of the island (which stops in the piazza) and a scooters or cars hire service is available in Malfa.
This is a wonderful house in a beautiful spot. Perfect place to relax and unwind.
The sunsets from the deck chairs are spectacular! The whole island is charming and the sea is beautiful too. We had a great stay and can only recommend.
We enjoyed every day of our stay at Orietta and Franco's house. They were very kind & generous hosts. The three lovely apartments are surrounded by a wonderful garden where they grow lemons, grapes, cipolle and olives.
Pollara is probably the smallest and quietest village of Salina. It's only accessible by a steep road and there is a bus every 1 1/2 hour or so. There is a friendly snack bar & a restaurant you should support during your stay. A path leads down the sea where you can swim and rest on the rocks.
Go there: if you're looking for an idyllic, quiet & peaceful place
Please skip it: if you want hustle and bustle & beach holidays
Our experience with Orietta and Franco was a wonderful one, they were generous hosts and we enjoyed not only their garden produce but also their company...Pollara is a small place but we found that we did not want to leave it often - it was visually inspiring for us as artists and the view from Itaca looking out over the sea, always needed to be checked out as the weather changed, and clouds came and went. Franco & Orietta have put a lot of love and work into restoring the house, we loved all the small details which enhanced the dwelling.
Alessandro's Oasi Bar just around the corner was also a bonus. We hope that many more people support him and his business.
Orietta and Franco created a wonderful house and garden in this remote place, which they are seemingly happy to share with their guest. We enjoyed the apartment, the view from the terrace, the walks to the beach, the slow rythem of the island, and the chats with Orietta and Franco over a glass of homebrew citronella liquor from their own garden. They are very kind hosts. We would be happy to meet again, in Pollara or Torino.
