Lagrasse is classed as one of France's most beautiful villages & lies in the foothills of the Corbières between Carcassonne and Narbonne and only 40 minute from the beaches of the Mediteranean.

The village has 6 restaurants, pizzeria, a bakery 2 café/bars, artisanal shops, 2 epiceries, tabac, post office, cash dispenser, hairdresser, doctors & chemist.
The river Orbieu provides excellent swimming in the summer months.

Lagrasse's Abbey founded in the 8th century, is shared between the commune and the Chanoines monks both of whom welcome visitors.
The summer months are very animated with various music festivals, piano concerts, circus, theatre, pottery & folk festivals.
Firework display on the 13th July followed by animations with a much bigger(and very famous) display in Carcassonne on the 14th- 40 mins from Lagrasse.

Here is the Lagrasse (website hidden) page description;

Tucked into the heart of the Corbières in southern France, Lagrasse attracts an extraordinary variety of residents, complementing its salt-of-the-earth locals. The tiny population of 630 people live in this medieval listed village surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, its backdrop dominated by an 8th century working Abbey. Situated in a valley surrounded by Mediterranean hillsides full of rosemary, thyme and cyprus trees, the river Orbieu meandering through the village, Lagrasse attracts thousands of visitors each year, some of whom never leave, falling in love with this picture postcard example of rural France and changing their lives to allow them to pursue their dream.
Lagrasse is one of those ‘centres of the universe’; you can be drinking in a bar in LA and meet someone who’s been to Lagrasse; Manhattan is full of Lagrasse lovers; from Nepal to Cape Town, Moscow to Rio de Janeiro, visitors come from all over the world, attracted by that intangible ‘pull’ that Lagrasse quietly exerts.

Getting around

Public transport very poor, there is a daily bus service to Carcassonne, Lézignan & Narbonne but NOT during school holidays. Nearest train station is 20 minutes awy in Lézignan-Corbières.

  • Nous avons été bien accueillie par Shona. La chambre, la salle de bain, et la petite cuisine sont très propres et bien agencées.
Tout était parfait pour notre halte à Lagrasse.
Il y a un parking pas très loin du centre pour se garer.

  • I booked this room as it was in the centre of Lagrasse, and was not disappointed at all. Lagrasse is a beautiful and bustling village, with good restaurants, cafes and a brilliant boulangerie, set in a muddle of tightly packed lanes, surrounded by picturesque countryside. The room was bright, comfortable and clean. As was the bathroom, which was shared with two other rooms. There was also shared access to a small kitchen stocked with all the basics you'd need to make a quick breakfast.
Shona was a helpful host, with stacks of information about the immediate area. Should I find myself near Lagrasse again, I will certainly be looking Chez Shona up again.
Just one note though - make sure you park in the correct car park (not the residents parking bays just outside) as you'll get a fine. There is plenty of free parking for tourists 2 minutes walk away.
Stayed June 2014, travelled as a couple

    Response from Shona:

Thanks Sarah & yes good point re: parking...the nearest car park is between the old bridge & the gendarmerie and my house is just opposite the gendarmerie.

  • Shona's place was a gorgeous little house in one of the most gorgeous little villages in France, for certain. She was very accomodatjng and let us leave out bikes there the next day while we explored. The house was clean and the hot shower absolutely amazing after our long day of cycling. Thanks!

  • We had a fine stay. Beautiful location in a very charming medieval village. We arrived a day early, but she accommodated us nicely. We watched DVD movies each night and enjoyed the company of our British fellow guest. Shona let us use the washing machine and told us about the public clothesline. She also recommended an excellent restaurant.

  • We can not say anything about the rooms themselves, as they were all busy and we "had to" live in a three-story house, instead of the room :) But the Lagrasse is wonderful city to stay in it and apartments are well located, shops, restaurants and parking, everything is very close. Shona is very friendly and pleasant host :)

    This place is highly recommended!
