Lagrasse is classed as one of France's most beautiful villages & lies in the foothills of the Corbières between Carcassonne and Narbonne and only 40 minute from the beaches of the Mediteranean.
The village has 6 restaurants, pizzeria, a bakery 2 café/bars, artisanal shops, 2 epiceries, tabac, post office, cash dispenser,hairdresser, doctors & chemist.
The river Orbieu provides excellent swimming in the summer months.
Lagrasse's Abbey founded in the 8th century, is shared between the commune and the Chanoines monks both of whom welcome visitors.
The summer months are very animated with various music festivals, piano concerts,circus,theatre,pottery & folk festivals.
Firework display on the 13th July followed by animations with a much bigger(and very famous) display in Carcassonne on the 14th- 40 mins from Lagrasse.
Here is the Lagrasse (website hidden) page description;
Tucked into the heart of the Corbières in southern France, Lagrasse attracts an extraordinary variety of residents, complementing its salt-of-the-earth locals. The tiny population of 630 people live in this medieval listed village surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, its backdrop dominated by an 8th century working Abbey. Situated in a valley surrounded by Mediterranean hillsides full of rosemary, thyme and cyprus trees, the river Orbieu meandering through the village, Lagrasse attracts thousands of visitors each year, some of whom never leave, falling in love with this picture postcard example of rural France and changing their lives to allow them to pursue their dream.
Lagrasse is one of those ‘centres of the universe’; you can be drinking in a bar in LA and meet someone who’s been to Lagrasse; Manhattan is full of Lagrasse lovers; from Nepal to Cape Town, Moscow to Rio de Janeiro, visitors come from all over the world, attracted by that intangible ‘pull’ that Lagrasse quietly exerts.
Lagrasse is designated one of France's most beautiful villages and is perfectly situated for all manner of beautiful walks: river and gorge, vines and olives, garigue and forest, mountain and valley. With 3 bars, fine epicerie, boulangerie, galleries, craft workshops, six restaurants and wine galore, there is little need to venture elsewhere. However, with it’s proximity to the autoroute, the beaches of the Med, Carcassonne, Toulouse, Narbonne, Perpignan, Montpellier and the Camargue are in easy reach - even Barcelona is only 3 hours away. Take the twisty roads through the glorious gorges of the Corbières and the astonishing Cathar castles are on the doorstep
The river, dammed in the summer to provide exquisite swimming, is bordered by the Abbey and the medieval waterfront and is crossed by 2 bridges one a fine Roman bridge.
The summer months are very animated with various music festivals, piano concerts,folk dancing, theatre,circus,pottery & book fairs...firework display from the old bridge on 13th July followed by Bastille day celebrations with a much bigger display on the 14th in Carcassonne- 40 mins away.
Public transport very poor, there is a daily bus service to Carcassonne, Lézignan & Narbonne but NOT during school holidays. Nearest train station is 20 minutes awy in Lézignan-Corbières.
In the summer visitors to Lagrasse are obliged to park in the visitor's car park to the right of the gendarmerie, my house is just opposite to the left of the honey shop "La Boutique des Abeilles" - follow the sign. If by any chance I am not in, please enter & make yourselves at home, rooms are on first floor & key to room in the lock.
We made a late decision to stop in Lagrasse for the night, and Shona was most accommodating with quick responses to our queries which was great. She was very welcoming upon arrival and had suggestions for where to eat, which was gratefully received considering in early November most of the cafes seemed to be closed for the season. The double room was very comfy, bathroom facilities were spotless and we had parking right outside. I'd recommend this as a good central location if you are visiting Lagrasse. It's a beautiful village to wander around and the abbey was worth a visit.
If You want to travel across the Languedoc (also to the sea), then Lagrasse is the best point for Your base (4-10 days). And it's nice place as is. As for hosting etc - everything was accurate and very good.
Our little room was simple but pleasant with some of Shonas nice decorative touchs. The shared bath was clean and just down the hall. Shona provides some breakfast basics in the small kitchen. In combination with the amazing bakery a few blocks away it makes for a great start to the day. Shona made sure that we were settled, told about local attractions, accommodated our laundry needs, then let us be.
Lagrasse est un village magnifique, superbe baignade dans la rivière et la chambre chez Shona est très agréable ainsi que la cuisine á partager... Muy recomendable! We really recommended! Merci et á une prochaine fois! Manuel & Mila
A lovely, clean, simple place to stay in the gorgeous village of Lagrasse. A great price, handy little kitchen, a kind and gracious host and free parking close by. A real little gem in the heart of the village. Highly recommended... And make sure you go swimming in the river at Ribaute 4km away!
