William is passionate about three things: Science, Scuba diving, and carving out safe, affordable living. He currently resides in Vancouver and works at UBC as a Postdoctoral associate with his wife, a law student at UBC. He completed his PhD at Rice University in Houston, TX where he got his start with a single air mattress in the living room of his above-garage rental. He was living paycheck to paycheck as a student barely making ends meet, and was expecting Airbnb to allow him to meet some interesting people and make a bit of spending money. He was surprised by the number of people that were willing to stay in simple accommodations, and met all kinds of interesting people., while breaking the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle. After a year of saving, he used the proceeds to buy an apartment in Houston, where he set up 1 bunkbed (for him and his roomate) and a private room. 1 bunk bed soon turned into 5, and 1 apartment turned into 3, housing people affordably to the point where people could break their own paycheck-to-paycheck cycles, and save up money. I have made lifelong friends, and when I left Houston, I left my good friend Lindsey in charge of the properties there. I'm now starting out in Vancouver where I hope to emulate the same model of affordability in a much less affordable city. Lindsey was one of my residents who, despite being a scientist with a PhD, fell on hard times and needed a safe, secure, cheap place to live for a couple years while she sorted her life out. She managed to get things back on track, and now she works for a renowned aerospace organization, and in her spare time, she manages the Houston properties. While these properties are advertised as short term rental, most of my tenants are looking for either looking for transitional housing or long term housing, and stay for either for 1-2 months or 6-12 months. Rarely does he get stays for less than a week
