PEZENAS & LANGUEDOC
Welcome to Pezenas
Pezenas is an interesting medieval town situated mid-way between Montpellier and Beziers in the Languedoc, southern France. The town was important in the 15th and 16th centuries, being the provincial capital of the Languedoc region, and receiving visits from the court of Louis XIV. Moliere, the famous French playwright, started his career here.
The town has many grand houses where nobility lived or stayed, many of which have lovely courtyards hidden behind deceptively plain facades. The old part of the town is interwoven with twisting cobbled streets leading up to the site where the castle once stood. In the summer evenings many little “eschoppes” (shops!) display handcrafted items in the old streets, and there are often carnivals or fetes taking place.
Markets, food and shopping
Every Saturday Pezenas has a visiting market, which almost fills the town with stalls selling … everything! Shops, bakeries, pharmacies, newsagents, hairdressers, etc are all available, as well as supermarkets in the new part of the town. Pezenas is well known for its antique shops (brocantes) selling everything from antique linens and laces, to china and glass, and furniture.
The town has a wide variety of cafes and restaurants, most of which are within easy walking distance of the house, with several in the old town square just a two-minute walk away. There are also municipal parks and a public swimming pool.
Between mountains and sea
The town is located on the coastal plain, set in beautiful wine country midway between the Mediterranean coast (15 miles) and the Cevennes mountain range (equally 15 miles), so a wide range of scenery and activities is available.
Visits to fabulous beaches, Crusader castles, historic market towns, vineyards, lakes and caves, and bustling fishing ports, are all within in an easy drive through beautiful countryside. Slightly further afield, within a couple of hours’ drive are Roquefort, the Camargue, the famous Millau bridge, ancient Nimes with its Roman amphitheatre and the “Pont du Gard” – to name but a few possibilities.
Activities / Sports
There are plenty of opportunities for sport and other activities within easy reach of Pezenas and here are a few ideas. Golfers have seven top class golf courses to choose from in the Montpellier / Beziers / Cap d’Agde area including two within minutes of sandy Mediterranean beaches (Golf du Cap d’Agde and Golf du la Grande-Motte) and one close to thermal spas in the Orb Valley (Golf du Lamalou-les-Bains). All have restaurant and bar facilities.
Canoes can be hired on the river Herault at the Pont Diable en route to St Guilhem Le Desert, and windsurfers or sailing equipment at the resort of Cap d’Agde. If you have your own equipment, you can sail off the coast or on Lake Salagou in the nearby hills. If you’d prefer to let someone else take the helm, take a boat trip from the coast or go on a sea fishing trip from Grau d’Agde.
There are plenty of other fun activities including karting or a trip to the water-park Aqualand or the aquarium in Montpellier, or a barge trip along the Canal du Midi, or cycling, or walking……..too many to mention!
Languedoc – The real South of France
The Languedoc region is a gem that is frequently overlooked. The Herault region has a wild and rugged beauty running down from the plateaux of the Garuigue, through the Gorges of the rivers Tarn and Herault, across a narrow coastal plain to long sandy beaches, and the blue Mediterranean. Here is history: with castles and fortresses of the Templars, the Crusaders, the land of the Cathars, and the Greek settlement of Agde.
Here is the largest wine growing area of France, now boasting many internationally known vintages, as well as superb and inexpensive “vin de table”. Here is wonderful cuisine, local cheese, fresh fish, and seafood from the oyster beds at the saltwater lagoon, the Etang de Thau.
The Languedoc enjoys the widest span of sunshine hours in all France, good for the grapes, and good for the beach!
