Hot tub AND the waterwheel turns! Cozy romantic couple's getaway repurposed from an historic 18th century gristmill. Great for college parents weekend. Perfect for a honeymoon or babymoon!

Covered deck overlooks the picturesque mill, providing relaxing sounds from the creek and waterwheel. The "ghost village" of Moore's Store is now surrounded by orchards and farms. Private yet convenient to wineries, breweries, ski resorts, hiking, caverns and rope adventures.

The space
A former sawmill is now an open concept cabin with three sleeping areas and a large deck to bring the creek sounds in. I raised my daughter here when we had no running water - just electricity. Now grown and with a family of her own, recent renovations were lovingly and imaginatively made to provide a comfortable place when visiting (and entice them to visit YaYa more often!). Filled with items salvaged from the mill such as grain chutes, mill auger, flour packer, pulleys and timber framing beams made from rare wormy chestnut that make this a creative and unique space to enjoy.

Guest access
The mills are on 1.25 acres, with Holman's Creek running through the property, much of which is wooded, with a spring fed pond and meadow - perfect for croquet. The stone gristmill itself still awaits renovation but provides a beautiful backdrop to the outside space.

Other things to note
The septic system only processes human waste, not food scraps, so no dishwasher or garbage disposal is installed. Food scraps go in the trash, and you will be hand washing any dishes you use.

Neighborhood highlights

Frontiersman Thomas Moore, surveyor with George Washington, settled the area, obtaining a large land grant from Lord Fairfax in the 1750s. Moore's Store was one of the first autonomous settlements in the Shenandoah Valley that centered around the merchant mill and also featured a sawmill, foundry, cobbler shop, doctor offices, harness shop, and post office. General Custer burned the mill and family plantation home during the Civil War. A sawmill fire destroyed nearly the entire village in the 1870s. Moore's Store was named for descendant George Moore who died in the Civil War. Rebuilt twice, the grist mill and store operated under the Moore family for over 200 years until the 1930s when a dynamite accident claimed the life of the last miller, George Armentrout, who had married the widow of George Moore. Just a few houses now remain along with the grist mill, sawmill, cobbler's home, and harness shop.

A historic grist mill has owned me for almost 30 years. Airbnb hosting allows me to share it with interesting folks and continue my renovations. I treat the places I visit with the same love and respect I expect from my guests.
