Zavala is a small fishing-village with approximately 200 inhabitants. It is situated on the sunny southern side of the island of Hvar where the water is still crystall blue. Magnificent pebble beaches in Zavala are among the most beautiful in Croatia.
Inhabitants of this pittoresque Dalmatian village traditionally live of olives, wine, fishing, and more recently tourism. Thanks to the preserved atmosphere of a typical, peaceful Mediterranean resort Zavala can offer you peace and relaxation, completely opposite of the bustle of modern urban life. There are no hotels and urban noises nearby.
Zavala is connected to the northern side of the island Hvar by a unique tunnel with the length of about one mile (1.4 km). Constructed initially as a means of bringing water to the south of the island, the Pitve-Zavala tunnel was never designed for passenger traffic, but until recently, it was the only means of road access to Zavala.
In Zavala there are few restaurantes and bars and several guesthouses with accommodation, rooms and apartments. There is not any disco in Zavala, the next disco is situated in Jelsa that is about 7 km away from. In Hvar town (30km away) you will find many of them.
There is a bus in Zavala, but not often. You can come with car or call taxi. The apartment has parking space.
If you come by plane, it is the best way to rent a car or you can use taxi. From Split airport you drive to Split, then go to Stari Grad on island Hvar by ferry, and drive to Zavala.
My holiday in Zavala can only be described as magical. The village was very peaceful and quiet and Margarita's and Ante's stone house was a perfect refuge from the everyday fuss. The apartment was neat and provided everything one needs, a huge bed being an additional perk. Margarita's father was a great host always concerned about his guests well being. If you're planing to stay in Zavala I would most definitely recommend that charming place.
From the moment we started enquiring, Margarita couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. We were looking for somewhere tranquil, close to the sea, no bright lights or big city, and we found everything we hoped in this wonderful, peaceful place. Margarita greeted us before returning to Split and her father Ante was an amazing host; he was so helpful without ever being intrusive, gave brilliant tips and it was a great pleasure to meet him. The apartment was exactly what we wanted, simple, clean, equipped for holiday cooking, a lovely garden to start the day in, and then the beautiful 10 minute walk down the hill through vineyards to the dazzling sea.... the whole zavala coastline is a series of rocky inlets, bays, pebbly beaches with crystal clear sea. It was a joy. There is a little supermarket, about 3 restaurants, and no ATM, so make sure you bring enough cash! We spent our whole week dawdling up and down to the beach, swimming, listening to night crickets and admiring the stars. Highly recommended!
This is it. One of the rare places you feel very lucky to have found. The beautiful old house and the romantic garden with grapefruit (!) and Bougainvillae trees, have such a unique charme that we felt satisfied just sitting under the cherry tree and enjoy the athmosphere. The apartment is small, but very cosy and the interior is chosen with care and personal touch. It was absolutely enough room for two adults and a toddler, and would probably be enough for another child, too. There is an outdoor shower and a stone fire place as well as a very spacious extra kitchen with dining table accessable from the garden.
As always it is the people that make places special and so it was our great pleasure to get to know Ante and Margerita that made us feel at home immediately. Ante stayed in the rooftop apartment during our stay and was very caring and amiable. He can tell you more about the islands impressive history than any guide book. We really enjoyed our time with him.
The walk to the beach is downhill, yes, but you walk through a beautiful vineyard. The beaches are clean and beautiful and our daughter loved the salty pebbles.
Also, when planning our trip Margarita was very helpful and organized a baby bed for us. We hope we will be lucky and return soon!
Not only is Zavala a wonderfully remote village (with a few great restaurants and a market with everything you need) on gorgeous rocky and pebbly beaches with vineyards, olive trees and figs galore, but Margarita and her family are wonderful people that warmly welcomed us and made our stay that much more special. We had the smaller apartment downstairs, which was just what we needed. Zavala gets hot in the summer, so just be warned that without AC, you will be warm and want to get into the water and into the shade near the water while you're there. We loved where we stayed and loved everything about it, but if you're not up for a bit of a hill climb home from the beach, then this may not be your place. Oh... and bring cash. No ATMs or CCs accepted in Zavala. Jelsa is only 7K away, though.
